  • US-A-3 881 559 discloses a package for cigarettes corresponding to the features of the preamble of claim 1, comprising an outer shell with an inner shell mounted therein for swinging movement relative to the outer shell.
  • the inner shell is rotatable to and from a first position within the outer shell and a second position angularly disposed relative to the outer shell such that a portion of the top of the inner shell is exposed laterally of the outer shell to provide access to the cigarettes.
  • An abutment means defined by an abutment surface on a tab member, which is integrally formed with a member of a top panel of the outer shell, is provided on the under surface of the top panel of the outer shell for engagement with the top edge of the inner shell to limit the rotation of the inner shell when it has reached its second position.
  • US-A-5 067 615 discloses a box with a hinged portion for opening and reclosing the box.
  • a slot-like opening provided in a flap, which is folded so that it lies on the inside top surface of the hinged portion of the box, engages an edge of a tab, which is provided on an additional section affixed to the non-hinged portion of the box.
  • the edge of the tab in its relaxed condition, extends above the plane of the top surface of the box after the hinged portion is closed, the tab provides a discernible tactile and audible "snap" action when the hinged portion of the box is closed and reopened.
  • EP-A0 928 751 discloses a package for smoking articles comprising a body portion, a lid portion hingedly connected to the body portion and a lifting device for lifting articles arranged in a lifting zone.
  • the lifting device comprises an article lifter arranged within the body portion adjacent to the lifting zone, which is moveable between an inactive position in which the article lifter is arranged close to the bottom of the body portion and an active position in which the article lifter is arranged at a distance from the bottom of the body portion.

  • the lifting strip may alternatively be formed as an integral part of the inner shell blank.
  • the consumer pulling upwards on the pull tab of the lifting strip causes the inner section of the base portion of the lifting strip to pivot relative to the outer section thereof about the transverse hinge line, thereby raising the contents of the container housed in the inner shell 4 that rest thereon upwards relative to the inner shell 4, facilitating their removal.
  • the inclusion of such a lifting strip is particularly advantageous where the side-opening container is used to package elongate consumer goods and, in particular, elongate smoking articles such as cigarettes.
  • the consumer pushes on the pull tab 28 and/or the right side wall 24 of the inner shell 4 to cause the first portion 26' of the outer bottom wall panel 26 to pivot upwardly relative to the bottom wall panels 12, 12a of the outer shell 2 about the hinge line 76, thereby returning the inner shell 4 to the closed position.
  • the curved upper edges of the overlying inner 22a and outer 22 left side wall panels engage the corrugations provided on the outer surface of the inwardly folded top wall flap 16 producing a sound and so providing the consumer with an audible indication of both opening and closure of the container.
  • frictional engagement between the upper edge of the trailing, left side wall of the inner shell 4 and the corrugations of the top wall flap 16 of the outer shell 2 also advantageously helps to prevent the container from opening and closing without the application of a force to the inner shell 4 by the consumer.
  • side-opening containers may comprise an outer shell with a pair of opposed open sides, having only a front wall, rear wall, top wall and bottom wall and no side walls.
  • the consumer may push, through an open side of the outer sleeve, on a side wall of the inner shell in order to pivot the inner shell from the closed position to the open position.
  • a cut-out may be provided therein to enable the consumer to similarly push on a side wall of the inner shell in order to open the container.
  • side-opening containers according to the invention may be provided with a plurality of corrugations that are, for example, embossed on or adhered to the inner surface of the top wall of the outer shell.
  • side-opening containers according to the invention may be provided wherein the plurality of corrugations are engaged by an upper portion of the inner shell to produce a sound during movement of the inner shell only from the closed position to the open position.
