Definitions

  • the invention relates to a process for the preparation of polymers with iso- or syndiotactic areas (briefly arranged areas) by polymerizing polymerizable compounds (monomers) in the presence of an optically active compound as a complexing agent, characterized in that
  • optically active compound More than 50% by weight of the optically active compound is in the form of only one of the possible enantiomers and the polymerization is carried out at temperatures below 20 ° C. and at least 10% by weight of the monomers are prochiral compounds.
  • the invention also relates to polymers obtainable by this process and the use of these polymers.
  • DE-A-19533269 and US 5521266 disclose a process for the radical polymerization of slightly water-soluble or water-insoluble monomers in aqueous systems.
  • cyclodextrin is used as a complexing agent.
  • Synthetic polymers are used in a variety of ways. Of particular importance is the use as a binder in coating compositions, e.g. Protective coatings or decorative coatings, or in adhesives or as a binder for strengthening nonwoven fabrics. Binders with good elasticity are particularly desirable for such uses.
  • the object of the present invention was therefore polymers with improved elasticity.
  • the polymers produced by the process according to the invention have iso- or syndiotactic regions (briefly ordered regions). Disordered areas are atactic.
  • Tacticity describes the stereoisomerism of polymers in which the polymerized monomers have asymmetric centers in the polymer, which consequently have a strictly constant configuration (isotactic: R, R, R ... or SSS ... configuration) or a sequence strictly alternating configuration (syndiotactic: R, S, R, S ).
  • the configuration can also switch between R and S in any way (unordered areas).
  • the iso- or syndiotactic areas each consist of only one type of monomer (homopolymer area) or of two strictly alternating polymerizing monomers, e.g. Maleic acid and diisobutene.
  • the monomers to be used for the ordered region must accordingly be prochiral, i.e. after their polymerization they form asymmetric centers in the polymer obtained.
  • the polymerization takes place in the presence of an optically active compound which forms a complex with the monomers to be polymerized.
  • this optically active compound When used, this optically active compound consists of more than 50% by weight of only one of the possible enantiomers of this compound.
  • It preferably consists of more than 70% by weight of only one of the enantiomers.
  • the optically active compound is 1.00% by weight of only one enantiomer, i.e. it is only one of the possible stereoisomeric forms (image or mirror image).
  • this compound as a complexing agent must be able to form complexes with the monomer to be polymerized.
  • the monomer to be polymerized is preferably spatially enclosed in the complex by the complexing agent.
  • Corresponding optically active compounds which are suitable as complexing agents are, for example, cyclodextrins (see also W. Saenger, Angew. Chemie Int. Ed. Engl. 1980, 19.344) or non-cyclic polysaccharides, in particular starch degradation products.
  • Suitable cyclodextrins are the cyclodextrins described in the above-mentioned literature reference. They are obtained, for example, by enzymatic degradation of starch and consist of 6 to 9 D-glucose units which are linked to one another via an a-1,4-glycosidic bond. a-Cyclodextrin consists of 6 glucose molecules. Compounds containing cyclodextrin structures are also suitable.

  • Such degradation products are also known as dextrins, roasted dextrins or saccharified starches.
  • Their production from native starches is known to the person skilled in the art and is described, for example, in G. Tegge, Starch and Starch Derivatives, EAS Verlag, Hamburg 1984, p. 173ff and p. 220ff and in the EP A 0441 197.
  • Practically all starches of vegetable origin can be used as native starches, for example starches from corn, wheat, potatoes, tapioca, rice, sago and sorghum.
  • Chemically modified starches are also preferred. Chemically modified starches are to be understood as starches or starch degradation products in which the OH groups are at least partially in derivatized, e.g. are present in etherified or esterified form. The chemical modification can be carried out on the native starches as well as on the degradation products. It is also possible to convert the chemically modified starches into their chemically modified breakdown products afterwards.

Such compounds are mostly used in a relatively small amount together with water-soluble monomers to produce water-swellable polymers. Such copolymers are important, for example, as water-absorbing polymers. The problem here is that one usually had to use water-soluble crosslinking agents in order to produce uniform polymers. For example, a compound containing cyclodextrin and / or a compound containing cyclodextrin structures and at least one monomer (a) can be dissolved together in a solvent and the solution, if necessary, to warm. After removal of the solvent, a crystalline complex remains. One molecule of the complexing agent can contain up to two molecules of the monomers (a) bound in complex form. These complexes are referred to in the literature as host / guest complexes. The compounds containing cyclodextrins or cyclodextrin structures contain the water-insoluble monomer in their cavities.

It is also possible to evaporate the monomers (a) and to act on the cyclodextrins via the gas phase. Such a procedure is particularly preferred, for example, in the production of complexes from cyclodextrins and low-boiling monomers (b). For example, ethylene, propylene or isobutene can be passed over finely divided cyclodextrins.

Description

Ebenso in Betracht kommen Cyclodextrinstrukturen enthaltende Ver- bindungen.
