Ein bekanntes Problem ist der nicht unerhebliche Platzbedarf dieser Ablageregale, wenn sie nicht benötigt werden. Ineinanderschiebbare/staffelbare Ablageregale sparen erst ab dem 2. Wagen Platz, Ablageregale deren Länge einstellbar ist, besitzen meist nur zwei Auflagerechen. Längenverstellbare Ablageregale, die vier Auflagerechen besitzen sind mit einer oder mehreren Querstangen ausgestattet die ihnen die nötige Stabilität verleihen. Diese Querstangen benötigen einen zusätzlichen Bedienaufwand beim Umstellen der Länge.
