- the saddles 30, 32, 36 and the support arm 38, with the corresponding drive means, not illustrated, represent an embodiment of movement means for the tool holder head 40 with respect to the base 20.
- the workpiece holder assembly 26 has an elongated form for supporting the pieces to be worked. It further comprises at least one series of workpiece holder extensions 42 movable between a position for gripping the piece to be worked and a position for releasing the worked piece.
- the workpiece holder extensions 42 define a system for locking or stirruping the pieces on the workpiece holder assembly.
- the machine tool 10 and in particular the workpiece holder assembly 26 are structured in such a manner that the position for releasing the worked piece is different from the position for gripping the piece to be worked.
- the workpiece holder assembly 26 rotates about an axis B.
- the position for releasing the worked piece is advantageously disposed at a predetermined angle ⁇ from the position for gripping the piece to be worked, having a value of between 0 and 210°, referring for example to a horizontal plane, preferably between 0 and 180°, and still more preferably between 0 and 90°.

- the loading means 48 comprise a gripper for picking up and transferring the pieces and a support guide therefor, not illustrated.
- the loading means are arranged to transport the ' pieces to be worked along a straight loading path 52 parallel to the work axis Z disposed so as to be inclined with respect to the horizontal plane P.
- the loading path extends from the magazine
- the workpiece holder assembly 26 is thus disposed in a position for gripping the piece to be worked.
- the loading path 52 in relation to the work axis Z, is therefore inclined with respect to the horizontal plane P by an angle ⁇ of between 10° and 45°, preferably equal to around 30°. [0058] ⁇ In the case where the support arm 38 is provided, the latter is preferably parallel to the loading path 52.
- the workpiece holder assembly 26 is structured in such a manner that the loading path 52 is aligned with the workpiece bearing or stirruping surface of the series of workpiece holder extensions 42 which are located in a position for gripping the piece to be worked.
- the workpiece holder assembly 26 is interposed between the tool holder head 40 and the loading means 48.

- the pieces to be worked are arranged in the magazine 50, picked up by the loading means along the loading path 52 and directed to the workpiece holder assembly.
- a first series of extensions 42 grips the piece to be worked.
- the gripping position of the extensions 42 may correspond to a first working position of the piece or, advantageously, the workpiece holder assembly comprises at least two series of workpiece holder extensions disposed in such a manner as to differentiate the gripping position from the working position of the piece to be worked. In such a case the gripping position is aligned with the loading path and the working position is higher.
- the passage from the gripping position to the working position is effected by rotating the workpiece holder assembly about the axis B.
- the working of the piece is brought about by means of controlled movements of the tool holder head along the axes X, Y, Z and, if necessary, C, A. If necessary, the working of the piece is brought about by means of controlled movements of the workpiece holder assembly about the controlled axis B.
- the machine tool according to the present invention has significant advantages in so far as its inclined structure, both in the workpiece loading portion and in the portion for movement of the tool holder head, permits optimum workability and visibility of the piece being worked, regardless of the face which has to be worked. This advantage is felt particularly in the field in question in which the pieces are often worked on three or more faces .
- the aforesaid advantages are particularly increased by the pressing production rates and by the requirement for a high production quality in a field such as that of working elongate wooden pieces on a large scale and at high speed.
- a further advantage of the machine tool according to the present invention is that of permitting rapid loading and unloading of the pieces directly by the workpiece holder assembly, permitting suitable alignment of the loading path or removal path with the corresponding system of stirruping on the workpiece holder assembly, his advantage is achieved in particular owing to the provision of a workpiece holder assembly having two or more stirruping surfaces and structured in such a manner as to be able to rotate in order to align itself with the axes of the tool chuck (in particular with the inclined work axis Z) or with the path followed by the piece by means of the loading means and with the removal path. In addition, if the path of the piece when approaching and when moving away is straight, the speeds may also be higher and the production rates more sustained.
- the structure of the machine tool according to the present invention advantageously makes it possible to facilitate the creation of suitable chutes for discharge of the shavings and their fall from the guides of the loading means or from other devices of the machine itself. In addition, it advantageously allows a good fall of the shavings from the plane of the workpiece holder assembly which is inclined with respect to the horizontal plane.
- a further advantage is provided by the fact that it is possible to create bases which are of compact and structurally rigid form.
- the workpiece holder assembly is consequently naturally inclined with respect to the horizontal plane and therefore mutually aligned with the loading path of the pieces being loaded and with a work axis of the tool holder head.
- a further advantage is provided by the rotation of the ' workpiece holder assembly which can also align itself with the removal means or path for the worked pieces .
- the machine tool according to the invention comprises a tool holder head mounted so as to be movable according to a plurality of work axes that are controlled and correspond to the degrees of freedom of the head itself.
- the machine tool 10 comprises a spindle holder head movable according to at least three controlled work axes, preferably three controlled work axes orthogonal to one another.
- the tool holder head is movable according to at least four controlled work axes, one at least of which is an axis of rotation, preferably parallel to the inclined work axis Z.
- the tool holder head is movable according to at least five controlled work axes, at least two of which are axes of rotation.
- the removal path lies in a discharge surface or chute inclined between 5 and 60° with respect to a horizontal axis on which the pieces move away by gravity.
