Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an apparatus for covering groups of products with tubular stretch film.
  • hood stretch machines which cover the products with a “hood”, that is to say, a tubular length of film closed at the top end to form a sleeve-like covering that is stretched over the stacked products and allowed to return to its original size, thanks to the elastic properties of the film, in such a way as to tightly hold the products together.
  • This type of covering is used, for example, to protect stacked products comprising sacks of loose material such as cement, flour or grain and is applied by machinery typically consisting of:
  • the stretching unit is also equipped with drive means that move the unit down along the frame in such a way as to draw the film over the products, allowing it to gradually release the concertina folds until the film reaches the base of the products at the pallet.
  • the stretching unit when the stretching unit reaches the base of the palletised load, it tucks the film under the pallet in order to more effectively cover and hold the group of products together.
  • each arm may comprise:
  • the vertical portion normally has an outwardly rounded shape to facilitate correct unfolding of the film as the unit moves down vertically.
  • an element independent of the stretching arms is used. This may consist, for example, of a horizzontally moving rod or abutment acting in conjunction with the stretching arm, coming into action when the stretching arms are near the pallet and coming into contact with the film in such a way as to push it towards the bottom of the pallet during the last part of the downward movement of the stretching arms, thus causing the film to completely cover and adhere to the palletised load.
  • each stretching arm has a horizontal portion which has a recess for retaining the film and which can be inclined in such a way as to guide the film until it is completely tucked under the pallet.
  • the aim of this invention is to overcome the above mentioned disadvantages by providing an apparatus for covering groups of products with tubular stretch film, which tucks the film under the group of products in an easy, rapid and reliable manner and which is relatively inexpensive to construct.
  • an apparatus for covering groups of products with tubular stretch film, closed at one end to form a hood comprising at least: a frame inside which the group of products is placed; a unit for stretching a portion of film in a configuration where it is open and folded in concertina fashion; the stretching unit comprising a plurality of arms each consisting of a first section for receiving the film and a second section by which the arm is connected to the frame; the arms being acted upon by horizontal translational drive means and vertical drive means which, respectively, at least stretch the film and move it downwards along the frame in such a way as to cover the products down to a level close to a working surface such that the product group is covered; each arm being further equipped with film retaining means located and operating in the region of the first section of the arm so as to retain a part of the free edge of the film unwound until the film itself, by a suitable movement of the arms, is positioned under the working surface.
  • the apparatus according to the invention is used to cover with tubular stretch film 2 one or more products forming product groups 1.
  • product group 1 will be used, without thereby limiting the scope of the inventive concept, to denote any entity consisting of a single product or two or more stacked products to be wrapped and sealed by the tubular film.
  • tubular stretch film may be sealed at its top end (shown by the broken line in the drawings) to form a sleeve-like covering that is stretched over the stacked products and allowed to return to its original size, thanks to the elastic properties of the film.
  • This type of covering is used, for example and not only, to protect stacked products comprising sacks of loose material such as cement, flour or grain.
  • hood-like covering is denoted in its entirety by the numeral 3 and comprises several stations and operating units, some of which are not illustrated in detail in the accompanying drawings since they do not strictly form part of the invention.
  • the stations that are not illustrated are those that feed the film 2 from a roll to an upper zone of a main frame 4 and to units that pick up and open the roll-fed film, transporting it, with one end open, into contact with a stretching unit 5.
  • the frame 4 may have a portal structure.
  • the drawings show only two uprights 4a and 4b that mount the operating units for handling the film 2.
  • the stretching unit 5 comprises a plurality of arms 6, 7, 8, 9 (four in this particular embodiment) each consisting of a first, substantially vertical section 10 for receiving the film 2 and a second section 11 by which each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 is connected to the frame 4.
  • references 12a and 12b respectively denote horizontal translational drive means and vertical drive means (see arrows F12a and F12b in Figures 1 and 2) acting on each of the arms 6, 7, 8, 9.
  • the horizontal translational drive means 12a stretch the film 2 to a size larger than the perimeter of the palletised product group 1, whilst the vertical drive means 12b move it downwards along the frame 4 in such a way as to cover the product group 1 down to a level close to a working surface S such that the entire product group 1 is covered.
  • each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 is further equipped with film 2 retaining means 13 located and operating in the region of the first arm section 10 so as to retain a part of the free edge 2a of the film 2 unwound until the film 2 itself, by a suitable movement of the arms 6, 7, 8, 9, is positioned under the working surface S.
  • the product group 1 may be positioned on a pallet 1p and the film 2 retaining means 13 hold the free edge 2a of the film 2 at least until the film 2 is positioned under the working surface S consisting of the underside of the pallet 1p.
  • the retaining means 13 may be located and operate in the region of the upper end 10a of the first vertical arm section 10 of each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 or in the region of the lower end 10b of each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 (as described in more detail below).
  • each first vertical section 10 has a rounded shape to provide better contact with the film 2 and, above all, to permit controlled unwinding of the film 2 as the arms moved downwards.
  • the retaining action of the means 13 may be accomplished by piercing or perforation in the vicinity of the upper end 10a of the first vertical section 10 of each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 (see Figure 3).
  • the action of the retaining means 13 may be accomplished by pressure of the part of the free edge 2a against the first section 10 of each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 (see Figure 7).
  • the retaining means 13 may be positioned in the vicinity of the rounded upper end 10a or in the vicinity of the lower end 10b and are equipped with drive means 14, supported by the respective arm 6, 7, 8, 9, and designed to move the retaining means 13 from an idle position, shown in Figures 3 e 5, in which the retaining means 13 are retracted and away from the film 2, to a working position, shown in Figure 4 and by a broken line in Figure 3, in which the retaining means 13 are advanced and in contact with the film 2 in such a way as to hold it to the first section 10 of each arm 6, 7, 8, 9, and vice versa.
  • the retaining means 13 consist of a plurality of perforating elements comprised of curved needles 15, placed side by side in such a way as to form a fork-like element that pierces, perforates and holds the free edge 2a of the film against the first section 10 of each arm 6, 7, 8, 9.
  • the needles 15 may be mounted on a single element (for example, a tube) 16 pivoted at 16a to the first vertical section 10 at a through opening 17 made in the first vertical section 10 itself.
  • a single element for example, a tube
  • the retaining means 13 consist of a plurality of curved clamping pins 15a placed side by side in such a way as to form a stop wall that holds the free edge 2a of the film against the first section 10 of each arm 6, 7, 8, 9.
  • the pins 15a are mounted on a single tubular element 16 pivoted to the first vertical section 10 at a through opening 17 made in the first vertical section 10 itself.
  • the tubular element 16 is in turn actuated by the above mentioned drive means 14 that push the needles or pins 15 or 15a through the opening 17 from the idle position to the working position and vice versa.
  • the drive means 14 of the retaining means 13 comprise a tie rod 18 pivoted at one end to the tubular element 16 and at the other end to a drive cylinder 19 located at the second section 11 of the respective arm 6, 7, 8, 9.
  • a knuckle lever 20 which is driven by the cylinder 19 and which actuates the tie rod 18 in a first direction (arrow F18a) in such a way as to turn the needles or pins 15 or 15a to the above mentioned working or retaining position and in a second direction (arrow F18b) in such a way as to turn the needles or pins 15 or 15a in the opposite direction to the above mentioned idle position.
  • the needles or pins 15 or 15a may be turned in opposite directions since the needles are turned from the top down so as to better penetrate the film 2, while the clamping pins 15a are turned from the bottom up so as to hold the edge 2a of the film 2 more securely.
  • the arms 6, 7, 8 and 9 may also be fitted with a sensor 40 for detecting the presence of the free edge 2a of the film 2 on the first arm section 10.
  • the sensor 40 (a photocell, for example) is connected to and acts on the retaining means 13 (in particular on the drive cylinder 19) in such a way as to activate the needles or pins 15, 15a when the free edge 2a of the film 2 is detected on the first section 10.
  • the photocell 40 may be positioned in an appropriate area of the second section 11 connecting to the frame 4, thereby activating the retaining means 13 with a greater degree of precision at exactly the right moment.
  • Each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 is also equipped with means for detecting the total dimension, in a vertical plane, of the product group 1 to be covered.
  • the detecting means 21 are designed to stop the vertical movement of the arms 6, 7, 8, 9 if they locate an obstacle (such as, for example, a product protruding from the product stack to be covered) on the downward path of the arms 6, 7, 8, 9.
  • these dimension detecting means comprise a rod 22 located under the second section 11 of each arm 6, 7, 8, 9.
  • the rod 22 is pivoted at one end to the second section 11 in such a way as to remain in a position lower down than, and protruding from, the second section 11 itself (see Figures 3 to 5).
  • sensors 23 for detecting the change in the position of the rod 22 caused by contact with an obstacle.
  • the sensors are designed to send to the vertical drive means 12b a signal S1 for stopping the vertical movement of the arms 6, 7, 8, 9.
  • each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 further comprises horizontal translational drive means 24 attached to the second section 11 and being designed to move respective pairs of arms 6, 7; 8, 9, positioned on the same side of the frame 4, towards and away from each other in such a way as to better position the arms 6, 7, 8, 9 with respect to the dimensions of the product group 1, to centre them relative to the product group 1 and to contribute to the stretching of the film 2.
  • each pair of arms 6, 7 and 8, 9 is mounted on a respective carriage 25 and 26, which is equipped with the translational drive means 12a for moving it along an axis Y towards and away from the side of the product group 1, and with the vertical drive means 12b for moving it along the axis Z and acting between the carriage 25, 26 and the respective uprights 4a and 4b of the frame 4.
  • Each arm 6, 7, 8, 9 is in turn equipped with the translational drive means 24 enabling it to move along an axis X parallel to a feed direction A in which the product group 1 is advanced into the frame 4.
  • An apparatus 3 structured in the manner described above thus permits rapid and precise covering of the product group 1 through suitable mechanisms for driving the arms 6, 7, 8, 9 close to the pallet 1p (see Figure 4).
  • the needles or pins 15 or 15a are then actuated and driven through the opening 17 to perforate/clamp the free edge 2a of the film 2 onto the arms 6, 7, 8, 9 while the latter are driven along the axes Y and Z in such a way as to move under the pallet 1p carrying the film 2 along with them.
  • An apparatus structured in this way therefore, fulfils the preset aims thanks to a structural modification to the arms which enables the film to be effectively tucked under the pallet without the need for units independent of the traditional arms.
  • the possibility of retaining the edges of the tubular film also speeds up the tucking step since the film is held securely by the arms, enabling the latter to complete the final step more quickly.
