Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the field of mail processing.
  • a franking system that includes a simple device for ascertaining the height H i of a mail piece with respect to at least one dimensional threshold SH defining a postal rate arrangement.
  • This machine provides a true measurement of the height of the mail item via a diode array.
  • This apparently simple solution is, however, extremely expensive in practice. Indeed, it assumes both the use of a large length bar and means to ensure that the mail item is perfectly "tucked", that is to say, it is not crooked relative to the reference face of the machine.
  • the present invention aims to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks and to allow verification on the fly of the height H i of a mail piece for franking purposes, without the need to proceed to the exact measurement of this height H i nor to position the mail piece in a perfectly "stuck" manner, that is to say in a position strictly parallel to the reference surface of the machine from which the checks or measurements are made.
  • the invention thus aims to implement a simple method and to achieve an economical and yet reliable device that allows, without the use of complex technical devices, to easily determine and on the fly the postal rate category to which must belong a mail item , depending on the value of a given dimension, such as the height, of that mail item.
  • each mail piece having longitudinal peripheral edges of length D i and transverse peripheral edges of height H i , which method is characterized in that the mail items are circulated at a constant speed V along an reference surface such that each article is in contact with said reference surface, at least on a portion of one of its longitudinal edges, in that the presence of an article with respect to a point is detected given the reference surface, on the one hand at a first distance d1 close to the reference surface perpendicular to it, and secondly to a second distance d 2 remote of the reference surface perpendicular thereto and corresponding to said dimensional threshold SH, in that the first and second periods of presence t 1 , t 2 of the same article are detected at said first and second distances d 1 , d 2 with respect to the reference surface, in that the ratio t 2 /
  • the coefficient ⁇ can be between about 0.005 and 0.05, and preferably close to 0.01.
  • the device is characterized in that it comprises a conveyor for flat transport of mail items at a constant speed V along a guide defining a reference surface parallel to the direction of movement of the mailpieces placed on the conveyor, jogging means for placing each article in contact with said reference surface at least on a part of one of its longitudinal edges, a first detection device made active when detecting the presence of an article with respect to a given point of the surface of r preferably at a first distance d 1 close to the reference surface perpendicularly thereto, at least one second detection device made active when detecting the presence of an article with respect to a given point of the reference surface at a second distance d 2 away from the reference surface perpendicularly thereto and corresponding to said
  • the coefficient ⁇ is preferably between about 0.005 and 0.05, and preferably about 0.01.
  • the first and second detection devices may comprise optical sensors.
  • the counting device comprises at least one optical encoder.
  • the device may further comprise a device for calculating the length D i of an article from the first duration of presence t 1 and the speed V of movement of the articles.
  • the invention also relates to a system for determining the postage franking amount, comprising a device for measuring the weight and dimensions of mailpieces, with a device for verifying the height H i of an article of mailpiece. mail as defined above.
  • the pricing of mail items is based on criteria of weight and size of the folds (thickness, length of the envelope, height of the envelope).
  • the verification of the height H 1 , respectively H 2 , of an envelope 1, respectively 2, with respect to a predefined threshold SH can be carried out in a very simple way since an envelope 1, respectively 2 , disposed flat on a belt 6 of a conveyor moving at a constant speed V in the direction of the arrow F of FIG. 1, is at least partially pressed against a fold guide K having a reference surface 5 parallel to the direction of movement of the envelopes 1, 2, that is to say that means are provided for placing each article 1, respectively 2, in contact with the reference surface 5 at least on a part of one of the longitudinal edges of length D 1 , respectively D 2 .
  • the invention takes into account envelopes whose longitudinal edges can form an angle ⁇ of the order of 0 to 5 ° with the reference surface 5, whether for transverse envelopes 3 whose rear edge is the farthest from the reference surface ( Figure 4) or for cross envelopes 3 whose leading edge is furthest from the reference surface 5 ( Figure 5).
  • the determination of the dimensions of the envelopes 1, 2, 3 can be done in a simple manner using measuring devices which can be constituted by simple sensors C 1 , C 2 changing state when an envelope passes at their level.
  • the envelope 1 is about to pass at the level of the two sensors C 1 , C 2 placed at a fixed station opposite the travel path of the conveyor belt 6, while the envelope 2 of height H 2 smaller than the height H 1 of the envelope 1 will then pass only at the level of the sensor 1.
  • the sensors C 1 and C 2 are placed with respect to a given point 7 of a line of the reference surface 5 perpendicular to the belt 6 of the conveyor, respectively at a distance d 1 close to the reference surface 5, perpendicular to it, and at a distance d 2 away from the reference surface 5, perpendicular to it and corresponding to a dimensional threshold SH relative to which it is desired to determine if the height H 1 , H 2 , H 3 of a mail item 1, 2, 3 is or is not superior.
  • An envelope 1, 2 or 3 during its course on the strip 6 passing in front of the reference surface 5 passes to the first sensor C 1 which triggers itself, when it detects an envelope presence, the count of pulses resulting for example from an optical coder the number of pulses, that is to say the duration t 1 during which the sensor C 1 detects the presence of an envelope, makes it possible inter alia to deduce the length D 1 , D 2 , D 3 of document 1, 2 or 3, since the constant speed V of displacement of the strip 6 is known.
  • this sensor C2 triggers in the same way the counting of pulses from for example an optical encoder the number of pulses, that is to say say the duration t 2 during which the sensor C 2 detects the presence of an envelope makes it possible to define a length L 2 for masking the sensor C 2 by an envelope 1, 2 or 3, and especially in combination with the duration t 1 (or length L 1 ) to reliably determine if an envelope actually has a height H i greater than the predefined threshold SH.
  • the comparison of the durations t 2 and t 1 (or lengths L 2 and L 1 ) determined from the detection of the activation of the sensors C 1 and C 2 makes it possible to verify that the exceeding of the threshold is not due. a bad positioning of an envelope that would be crooked.
  • the ratio t 2 / t 1 is thus compared with a value equal to 1- ⁇ where ⁇ represents a correction factor less than 1 depending on the tolerances of the detectors C 1 , C 2 and the dimensions of the envelopes of the same format, and considers that the height H i (for example H 1 , H 2 , H 3 ) of an article (for example 1, 2, 3) is greater than the threshold SH if, and only if, the relation t 2 / t 1 > 1- ⁇ is verified.
  • represents a correction factor less than 1 depending on the tolerances of the detectors C 1 , C 2 and the dimensions of the envelopes of the same format
  • the value ⁇ may advantageously be of the order of 0.01, but may also, depending on the case, be between approximately 0.005 and 0.05.
  • the threshold SH is not artificially considered as exceeded because of a cross positioning which causes the temporary activation of the sensor C 2 .
  • FIG. 2 shows an example where an envelope 2 is suitably jogged along the reference surface 5 and has a height H 2 less than SH.
  • FIG. 3 shows an example where an envelope 1 is suitably tapped along the reference surface 5 and has a height H 1 greater than SH.
  • the sensor C 2 is activated for a duration t 2 corresponding to a masking length L 2 equal to the masking length L 1 determined from the activation of the sensor C 1 .
  • the device transmits the information that the height H 1 is greater than the threshold SH and the sensor C 1 serves to provide a value L 1 defining the length D 1 of the envelope 1.
  • FIGS. 4 and 5 where an envelope 3 is angled with respect to the reference surface 5 has been previously described and it has been seen that the envelope 3 has been considered to have a height H 3 lower than the threshold SH , although the sensor C 2 was activated for a time corresponding to a masking length L 2 , since these values t 2 and L 2 were much lower than the values t 1 and L 1 determined from the sensor C 1 .
  • the sensor C 1 makes it possible to satisfactorily determine the length D 3 of the envelope 3 from the size L 1 in giving the length D 3 the value of the quantity L 1 , since the angle ⁇ is small and does not exceed about 5 °.
  • the device according to the invention makes it possible to determine the length of their flight and to verify their height with respect to a predefined threshold SH, without the need to straighten mechanically.
  • the envelopes crosswise when they have been partially pressed against the reference surface 5 of the fold guide 4.
  • FIG. 1 An example of a processing circuit that may be implemented in the context of the device according to the invention will be described with reference to FIG.
  • Modules 11, 12 respectively detect the activation of the sensors C 1 and C 2 .
  • activation is defined as the state of the sensors C 1 and C 2 when a mail item passes in their vicinity and, for example, in the case of optical sensors, interrupts a light beam emitted by the sensors.
  • the modules 11, 12 sensitive to the activation of the sensors C 1 and C 2 respectively control a unit 31 for managing counters 21, 22 which themselves deliver information t 1 and t 2 respectively corresponding to the duration of presence of a same article of mail next to the sensors C 1 and C 2 respectively.
  • the data t 1 and t 2 are applied to a module 32 for calculating the ratio t 2 / t 1 , which ratio t 2 / t 1 is applied to a module 33 for comparing the ratio t 2 / t 1 with a value 1 ⁇ .
  • the output of the module 33 is applied to a module 36 providing the information according to which the height H i of the mail article is or not greater than a predetermined threshold SH.
  • a module 35 also performs the calculation of the masking length L 1 (to which the length D i of the envelope corresponds) from the value t 1 coming from the counter 21 and from the value of the speed V of displacement of the belt 6 of the conveyor.
  • a test 101 examines whether the sensor Ci is activated. If this is not the case, there is a return to the input of this test 101. If the sensor is activated, it proceeds to step 102 of starting the counting of the duration of the activation of the sensor C 1 then a test 103 examines whether the sensor C 1 is still activated. When the test 102 detects the end of the activation of the sensor C 1 , proceed to step 104 of stopping the counting of the duration of the activation of the sensor C 1 , then to the step 105 of determining the value L 1 in step 106 of resetting the counter associated with the sensor C 1 . The output of step 106 is connected to the input of test 101 to reset the process.
  • the output of the test 101 is further connected to a test 107 which examines whether the sensor C 2 is activated. If this is not the case, a test 108 is applied to examine whether the end of the counting of the activation duration of the sensor C 1 has occurred. If so, a step 109 determines that the value L 2 is zero. If no, there is a return to the entry of test 107.
  • step 106 is connected to the input of test 101 to reset the process after the processing of a mail item.
  • the invention applies to a system for determining the amount of postage mail including a device for measuring the weight and dimensions of mail items, and in which is incorporated a verification device in flight of the height H i an article of mail as described above.
  • the device for measuring the weight of the flight may be arranged upstream or downstream of the verification device in flight from the height of a mailpiece.
