- the groove 200 may be located at the underside of the flange 106 and thus open downward, or it may be located at the exterior surface 105 and adjacent below the flange 106, depending on the type and of the sealing element used The particular situation will be described in the flowing embodiment.
- grooves 201, 202 at the underside of the flange 106, 106' of the bottom sash part 104 which are parallel to the groove 200 provided at the underside of the flange for mounting the sealing element.
- the groove 200 below the flange 106 of the two side sash parts 103 extends forward across the two parallel grooves 201, 202.
- three sealing elements are together provided to form a sealed space with a better sealing; and on the other hand, the sealing elements may be formed into a single piece, which can be fixed easily below the entire flange 106 and 106'.
- the number of the grooves formed in the underside of the flange 106' can be one or more than one.
- a groove 203 formed facing downward.
- the groove 203 is parallel to the sash bottom part 104. It is used to receive and fix a sealing element so as to seal between the interior surfaces of the sash frame and the window frame.
- these sealing grooves 200, 201, 202, 203 packed with sealing elements can provide noise and dust insulation. Because the cold air outside the house cannot enter the room through the gap between the window frame and the sash, the vapor inside does not condense into dew or frost at the gap. These designs are particular advantageous in wooden window structure.
- This embodiment uses a wood and PUR composite material, which consists of a core made from plywood and a cover made from a PUR layer for covering the core fully and partially. Since wood is a good heat-insulation material and is not expensive, while PUR is a good water-resisting material and is ligh, the composite material has the advantages of low cost, light weigh and water-resisting. This material can be produced by plastic molding processes, so as to form a single-piece sash frame, without any seam. The PUR may be coated with other materials.
- this embodiment relates to a preferred embodiment of a sash frame for a roof window according to the invention.
- this embodiment is similar to the first embodiment, and therefore, uses the same numeric identifiers for the same parts or structures.
- the top surface of the bottom part 404 of the window frame 400 is lower than the top surface of the side parts 403, while the flange 406 corresponds to the flange 106 formed at the exterior surface of the sash.
- the groove 107 is provided at the top surface of the sash flange 106 and thus guides and discharges water.
- a sealing element 310 is mounted in a surrounding groove 200 below the sash flange, by inserting the sealing element 310 into the groove 200, so that the sealing element 310 is fixed at the sash 100.
- An O-sealing element 311 seals the substantially horizontal interface between the flange 406 of the interior window-frame surface and the flange 106 of the exterior sash surface.
- One side portion of the sealing element seals a substantially vertical gap between these two flanges.
- Fasteners such as nails are used to fix the sealing element on the sash to prevent it from coming out of the groove 200 when the window is opened or closed.
- the underside of the flange 106' of the bottom sash part 104 is above the top surface of the bottom frame part 404, and the front end of the sash extends forward from the bottom frame part 404, so that the water on the top surface and the flange 106' of the sash can bypass the bottom frame part 404 and be discharged directly to the flashing part (not shown) of the roof window via the bottom covering 154.
- the space 300 above the sash flange 106 is used to mount a servo lifting device and a hinge device (not shown).
- the underside of the protruding part 106' of the bottom sash part 104 has two grooves 201, 202 for receiving two sealing elements (not shown) respectively.
- the sealing elements are inserted into the grooves 201, 202 or the flange described above and fixed into the sash. They seal the gap between the bottom parts of the window frame and the sash.

Also the sealing strips are difficult to move when being pressed, plus being nailed to the frame 1 by the nail (not shown), so the sealing strips won't fall off easily.
- the two ends of the grooves are connected, thus not only three sealing structures are formed by mounting sealing strip of one integrated structure, but also two closed sealing spaces are formed among the three sealing strips. Therefore, it achieves a better sealing effect.
- the sealing strip is not mounted in the two preceding grooves 3, but due to the two grooves at the connecting surface between the sash 1 and the frame 2, the wind or sound wave that enters here will be depressurized by the two grooves. So the air or sound wave that further enters the gap will be weakened, thus a certain wind resistant and sound insulating effect can be still achieved.
- the sealing effect of the groove 3 and two sealing strips 4, 8 Due to the sealing effect of the groove 3 and two sealing strips 4, 8, even strong wind can not blow into through the gap between the sash and the frame, so that rain and dust are impossible to be brought in either. At the same time, the spread of the sound wave is blocked, so the noise reduction is achieved.
- the closed space formed by the sealing strips 4 and 8 has a strong effect of heat insulating, and sound insulating, so that the temperature indoor at the gap of the window won't be too low, further preventing the condensation and the frost.
- the groove for mounting the sealing strip can be placed at the corresponding place of the frame. Also the position and quantity of the sealing strips can be changed according to the actual situation.

Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to a sash and a roof window, the sash and the roof window equipped therewith have a nice sealing performance, and are well wind-resist, rain proof, dustproof and sound insulated.
- The known openable roof window comprises a sash hinged with a frame, so that the sash can rotate relative to the frame about the axis, thus facilitate to open and close the roof window.
- Since a roof window is installed in a building's sloped roof, to an openable roof window comprising a sash mounted in the frame, because the gap between the frame and the sash is substantially vertical to the wall, if there is water entering the gap, the water will inter indoor through the gap. Thus for an openable roof window, the sealing requirement of the window is more strict.
- The Chinese patent applications 02254260, 02254261 and 02254262 disclosed the side coverings, bottom covering and top covering of a roof window, the covering structure will cover the gap between the frame and the sash, prevent the rain from entering the gap between the frame and the sash as much as possible. Also sealing strips are mounted around the sash periphery to achieve the seal at the active connecting surface between the frame and the sash. However, under certain circumstances such as a heavy rain or strong wind, it's still possible for the rain to enter into the circular gap between frame and the sash through the gap between the covering and the sash. The water entered into the gap possibly will enter the house through the seal between the frame and the sash and bring some undesirable effects. Even if the water does not enter into the house, it is still harmful to the wooden frame and sash when staying in the gap, in particular when the window is closed, there is no sunshine or ventilation in the gap, so the water in the gap or the water immerged in the wood cannot be vaporized, then the wood may be eroded and rotten due to the moisture, thus affect the lifespan of the roof window.
- In addition, a hinge which hinges the sash of the roof window to the frame or a servo lifting device in the roof window such as which disclosed in the patent application WO95/16097, when being installed it needs to groove between the frame and the sash to accommodate and fix the above device. For the installation of these devices through grooving, each groove needs to be designed and machined according to the shape or other conditions of the device, not only the machining is not convenient, but also it increases the workload for the design. Also the installed member used in the groove structure is not convenient either, and it will affect the overall coordination and appearance of the window structure.
- Under the windy condition, due to the guidance of the sloped roof, the wind which blows to the roof usually will change the direction to along the exterior surface of the roof, so it blows upward along the sloped roof. Thus the bottom of the roof window mounted in the sloped roof, i.e. the bottom part of the frame is exposed in the stronger wind. In the Chinese patent application 02254261, it disclosed a roof window structure, since there is only one sealing strip to seal between the frame and the sash, and the sealing strip ages after a certain time thus deteriorates the seal. So when the wind is strong, the wind will blow into the gap between the frame covering and the sash covering, then blow into the house through the gap between the frame and the sash, thus it's inevitable that the dust will be blew into the house. In a rainy weather it is possible that the rain will be blew into the house. Also, when the wind blows into the gap it will produce a whistle noise, or exterior noise, and the moisture outdoor can enter the house through the passage formed by the gap. Another undesirable situation is that, since the seal at this part is weak, in winter, the cold air will enter the house, it lowers the indoor temperature and also makes the vapor in the air condenses in the gap between the frame and the sash, even condenses to frost.
- For the above problems existed in the roof window of the known technology and its consequences due to these problems are undesirable, because they will either damage the roof window structure or affect people's lives.
- In order to solve the aforesaid problems existed in the roof window, one purpose of the invention is to provide a sealing sash frame of a roof window. A sealing sash frame creates a nice seal cooperates with the frame, thus improves the sealing function of the window, reduces the unnecessary damage brought by the water entering the house through the gap between the frame and the sash or the water staying in the gap for a long time.
- Another purpose of the invention is to provide a sealing sash frame of a roof window, such that the installation of a window member such as a servo lifting device is more convenient and decent, also it facilitate the design and production of the sash.
- Still another purpose of the invention is to improve the bottom part of the roof window sash, so as to improve the sealing performance between the bottom part of the sash and the bottom part of the frame, achieve a nice seal so as to prevent wind, rain or dust from entering, also it insulates effectively the noise and its spread, reduces the condensation of the dew or frost at the part.
- In order to achieve the purposes, the invention provides a sealing sash frame of a roof window, which is mounted in the frame of the roof window constitutive of one bottom part, one top part and two side parts of the sash. The sash has at least a sash flange on the exterior surface of two side parts of the sash, extending along the exterior surface of the sash which be divided into a upper portion and a lower portion, and when having a sash flange on the top part of the sash, it extends in order to connect with the flanges on two side parts of the sash. Due to the existence of the flange at the side parts of the sash, the water entering into the gap between the frame and the sash and dripping down along the exterior surface of the sash is blocked. The water drips along the flange to the bottom part of the sash, then is discharge through the bottom part.
- There also can be flange protruding outward at the upper section of the sash bottom part exterior surface, and when installing the sash onto the frame, the flange needs to be above the frame bottom part. The ends of the flanges at the two side parts connect with the flange at the sash bottom part. A preferred embodiment is, the top surface of the flange that extends upwardly from the beginning of the curvature towards the bottom of the sash reaches the same level with the top surface of the flanges on the two side parts of the sash. The flange at the sash bottom part facilitates the water dripping down along the sash side parts flanges to the flashing part of the roof window though itself, without entering the gap between the sash bottom part and the frame bottom part.
- Due to the existence of the flange, when the sash being installed onto the frame, there is enough space between the sash and the frame to mount the window parts such as servo lifting device or hinges, no needs to design and machine the grooves for those parts separately. Also the position of the parts to be mounted can be determined easily.
- In order to make the water flow along the sash side parts easily, without flowing below the flange, as a further improvement, there is at least one drainage groove on the top surface of the sash flange of the two side parts of the sash, which extends longitudinally. The guidance function of the drainage groove will facilitate the water on the flange surface flow along the longitudinal direction, instead of flowing over the edge of the flange to the gap between the flange underside and the frame.
- A groove is formed in the underside of the flange, or formed in the exterior surface of the sash for securing the sealing element which forms sealing between the sash and the frame. The groove used for the sealing element connects with its neighboring grooves. Since there is a groove for placing the sealing element below the flange, by inserting the extruding part of the sealing element correspondingly into the groove will make it easily and accurately to mount and secure the sealing element onto the sash, and the sealing element won't fall off. Since the sealing element is positioned below the comer of the flange, it can seal a horizontal surface and a vertical at the same time, is better than the seal of single side.
- In order to improve the sound insulation and seal of a window, as a further improvement of the sash, the underside of the sash flange has at least one groove which is used for securing the sealing elements, which forms sealing between the underside of the flange of the sash bottom part and the top surface of the frame bottom part. There is also a groove for the sealing element at the connection part between the exterior surface and the bottom surface of the sash; the groove is corresponding to a sealing surface on the bottom part of the frame.
- The top part, side parts and bottom part of the sash can be made of wood, aluminum alloy, plastic steel, stainless steel or combination of these or other materials. Or it can be wood covered in part of in full with PUR.
- The invention also provides a roof window, which comprises a sash and frame coverings installed on the roof structure; the sash includes at least sash parts, glass and sash coverings, the sash coverings are installed on the sash parts, and pressing the edges of the glass to secure the glass to the sash parts; the sash coverings are constitutive of a top sash covering, two side sash coverings and a bottom sash covering, characterized in that the sash having at least a sash flange on the exterior surface of two side parts of the sash, extending along the exterior surface of the sash which be divided into a upper portion and a lower portion, and when having a sash flange on the top part of the sash, it extends in order to connect with the flanges on two side parts of the sash.
- The covering consists of a first covering and a second covering. The seconding covering is a sheet material, fixed at the top part of the sash. The first covering is fixed at the top part of the frame. One end of the first covering bends down, the end of the second covering which connects to the first covering bends up and hook with the bended end of the first covering, and it can rotate relate to each other.
- The coverings of the frame comprise two side part coverings and a bottom part covering. There is a horizontal surface of the side parts covering fixed on the top surface of the side parts, the edge at the inner side of the horizontal surface is bended up to a vertical surface, another edge of is inserted in a groove at the bottom part.
- It can be appreciated that all the technical characteristics of the sealing sash frame of a roof window described above can be used to the sash of the roof window.
- To sum up, for the sealing sash structure of a roof window or the roof window equipped therewith according to the invention, comparing with the known sash of a roof window or a roof window, has the following advantages,
- 1. Can easily discharge the water entered into the gap between the frame and the sash, prevent this part of water from entering indoor and damaging the window structure, such as the moldiness and rottenness of the frame or sash.
- 2. Due to the large space above the sash flange, it's convenient to mount servo lifting device or other window part, reduces the designing and machining workload to groove on the sash or frame. Also makes the sash structure decent, coordinated overall.
- 3. Since there is a groove for securing the sealing element below the flange, makes it easier to mount the sealing element which seals the gap between the frame and the sash, improves the sealing performance.
- 4. There added a plurality of bottom sash part sealing structure at the bottom sash part, it provides a better seal between the bottom sash part and the bottom frame part of the roof window, and also a better wind-resistance, dust and noise insulation. It also prevents the water from condensing into dew or frost.

- Hereinafter, a sealing sash frame and a roof window equipped therewith will be described in detail with reference to the drawings and preferred embodiments, such that the invention will be appreciated.
- Figs.1 to 4 are views of a sealing sash frame used in a sloped roof window according to the invention, which relates to a preferred embodiment of a sealing sash frame according to the invention.
- As shown in Figs. 1 to Fig. 4, a sealing sash frame 100t is a single piece comprising a
top part 102,side parts 103 andbottom part 104. Around theexterior surface 105 of the entire sash frame, i.e. the exterior surfaces of the top part, bottom part and the side parts, there is aflange 106 protruding outward therefrom. Theexterior surface 105 of the top sash part and the side parts is divided into an upper section and a lower section by theflange 106. The flange 106' of thebottom sash part 104 is different from theflange 106 of the side sash parts and the top sash part in that the flange 106' is an outward extension of the top section of thebottom sash part 104. When installing the sash onto the window frame, as shown in Fig. 6, the flange of the bottom sash part covers the top surface of the bottom window-frame part and extends above the bottom window frame part. As shown in Fig. 1, the flange of the side parts has acurved bend 106a which is curved as it approaches the bottom sash part, so as to go to the top surface of the bottom sash part when the flange approaches thebottom sash part 104. The top surface of the front end of theflange 106 flushes with the top surface of the bottom sash part flange 106'. As shown in Fig. 3, theouter edge 106b of theflange 106 at theside sash parts 103 is higher than the inner part where the flange is connected to theexterior surface 105 of the sash part, so as to form adrainage groove 107 at the side parts of the sash. Thegroove 107 on the top surface of theflange 106 shown in Fig. 3 is formed in the top surface of theflange 106, with the outer portion of the flange being higher than the inner portion. Of course, the drainage groove may be a separate groove part fixed onto the top surface of the flange. This can be a good choice, when the sash frame is made of wood. Using such a separate groove part is more advantageous than cutting out the wooden sash parts. The cross section of the drainage groove is U-shaped, V-shaped, curved or the combination thereof or other shaped, as long as it can drain water. - If there is water dripping down along the
top part 102 and theside parts 103 of thesash 100, since the sash is tilted or sloped, theflange 106 of thetop sash part 102 forms a water groove, whose outer edge is higher in level than the inner edge due to the tilting. Therefore, the water can flow to thedrainage groove 107 of the flange on the exterior surface of theside sash parts 103. Similarly, if there is water dripping down along the flange on the exterior surface of theside sash part 103, the water can be contained by theflange 106 when it flows there, in particular when there isdrainage groove 107 as shown in the figure on the top surface of the flange, since the water dripping down from the exterior side of the sash is of small quantity. Guided along thedrainage groove 107, the water flows to thebottom sash part 104 along the flange and the groove. Then, the water drips down from the front edge of the flange 106' of the bottom sash part, along the downward folding edge mounted at the bottom covering of the sash, onto a flashing part. Since the flange 106' of the bottom sash part covers the top surface of the bottom window-frame part and extends above the frame, the water cannot flow in the bottom frame part, and thus cannot enter the gap between the bottom sash part and the bottom frame part. - Due to the drainage of the
flange 106, it can drain the water in the gap between the sash and the window frame and drip down along the sash, stop the water from flowing further below the flange and entering the house. Consequently, it prevents the water or moisture from eroding the wooden members. - Referring to the Figs. 6 and 7, due to the existence of the
flange 106 on thetop part 102 and theside parts 103 of thesash 100, there is alarge space 300 above thesash flange 106. The space can be used to install a servo lifting device or hinge for the roof window. Not only can they be installed easily since the space is large, but also since these devices are fixed above theflange 106. After being installed, they are not visible from indoor. Therefore, the installation does not affect the appearance of the window. - In the underside of the
flange 106, 106' at the connection comer with theexterior surface 105 of the sash, there is a surroundinggroove 200 formed, which is used to receive asealing element 310, so as to seal between thesash frame 100 and with the corner 306 of thewindow frame 1 when the window is closed, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, so as to prevent wind and rain from entering the gap between the sash and the frame. Thegroove 200 may be located at the underside of theflange 106 and thus open downward, or it may be located at theexterior surface 105 and adjacent below theflange 106, depending on the type and of the sealing element used The particular situation will be described in the flowing embodiment. - There are two
grooves flange 106, 106' of thebottom sash part 104, which are parallel to thegroove 200 provided at the underside of the flange for mounting the sealing element. Thegroove 200 below theflange 106 of the twoside sash parts 103 extends forward across the twoparallel grooves entire flange 106 and 106'. Of course, the number of the grooves formed in the underside of the flange 106' can be one or more than one. At the comer between the exterior surface and the bottom surface of the sash, there is agroove 203 formed facing downward. Thegroove 203 is parallel to the sashbottom part 104. It is used to receive and fix a sealing element so as to seal between the interior surfaces of the sash frame and the window frame. There are four sealinggrooves grooves - Users may use wood and aluminum alloy, stainless steel, plastic-steel or other composite materials. This embodiment uses a wood and PUR composite material, which consists of a core made from plywood and a cover made from a PUR layer for covering the core fully and partially.
- As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, this embodiment relates to a preferred embodiment of a sash frame for a roof window according to the invention.
- Referring to Fig. 5, this embodiment is similar to the first embodiment, and therefore, uses the same numeric identifiers for the same parts or structures.
- There is a
flange 406 at thetop part 402 and twoside parts 403 of thewindow frame 400 cooperating with theflange 106 at the exterior surface of thesash frame 100. The top surface of thebottom part 404 of thewindow frame 400 is lower than the top surface of theside parts 403, while theflange 406 corresponds to theflange 106 formed at the exterior surface of the sash. There is adrainage groove 407 at theflange 406 of the window frame, which bends upward as it approaches the bottomwindow frame part 404, so that the top surface of theflange 406 levels with the top surface of thebottom part 404, so as to facilitate drainage along thedrainage groove 407. Thegroove 107 is provided at the top surface of thesash flange 106 and thus guides and discharges water. A sealingelement 310 is mounted in a surroundinggroove 200 below the sash flange, by inserting the sealingelement 310 into thegroove 200, so that the sealingelement 310 is fixed at thesash 100. An O-sealing element 311 seals the substantially horizontal interface between theflange 406 of the interior window-frame surface and theflange 106 of the exterior sash surface. One side portion of the sealing element seals a substantially vertical gap between these two flanges. Fasteners such as nails are used to fix the sealing element on the sash to prevent it from coming out of thegroove 200 when the window is opened or closed. - The underside of the flange 106' of the
bottom sash part 104 is above the top surface of thebottom frame part 404, and the front end of the sash extends forward from thebottom frame part 404, so that the water on the top surface and the flange 106' of the sash can bypass thebottom frame part 404 and be discharged directly to the flashing part (not shown) of the roof window via the bottom covering 154. - The
space 300 above thesash flange 106 is used to mount a servo lifting device and a hinge device (not shown). - The underside of the protruding part 106' of the
bottom sash part 104 has twogrooves grooves groove 203 at the lower comer of the sash for receiving another sealing element (not shown). When the window is closed, the another sealing elements sandwiched between the sash and the window frame, specifically onto the surface of theflange 408, which forms a channel used for accumulating condensed water, or the sealing element seals the gap between the sash and the window frame. Four sealing elements are used to seal the gap between the window frame and thus prevent wind, rain, snow, dust and noise from entering the house. Since cold air is blocked, there is no condensed water such as dew or frost. - Vacuum or
insulation glass 500 is fixed on the sash by four sash covering fixed on the sash by screws, i.e. the top sash covering 152, theside sash coverings 153 and the bottom sash covering 154. There aredrainage grooves 157 at theside sash parts 153 so as to drain water. - There are also a frame side covering 453 and bottom covering mounted at the side parts and bottom parts of the window frame. The coverings cover the top surface and part of the exterior surface of the window frame, protect the window frame and the sash in particular their wooded structures from the weather .
- The exterior edge of the
sash side coverings 153 bends down and exceeds a vertical plate of theframe side coverings 453, so as to make sure the rain and dew drips down along the frame covering. The coverings are also used to cover the gap between the window frame and the sash, to prevent the rain from entering the gap. There is a top covering formed by afirst covering 501 and asecond covering 502 on top of the window. Thefirst covering 501 is fixed at thetop part 402 of the window frame, while thesecond covering 502 is fixed at thetop part 102 of the sash. The first covering is hooked with the second covering, so they can rotate relative to each other when the window opens. The purpose of the top covering is to prevent water from entering the top gap between the window frame and the sash. - As shown in fig.1, a
flange 6 protruding forward is located at the top of asash 1. Theflange 6 extends above the top surface of aframe 2 and forms a connectingsurface 5 between the flange and the top surface of the sash. Aconvex platform 7 is on the interior surface of theframe 2. Another connecting surface is formed by the top surface of theconvex platform 7 and the corresponding surface of the sash. When the window is closed, thesash 1 presses theframe 2. - Corresponding to the
convex platform 7 at the interior surface of the frame, agroove 9 opening downward is on the surface of the sash part. A sealingstrip 8 is mounted inside thegroove 9. The sealingstrip 8 seals between the top surface of theconvex platform 7 and the corresponding sash surfaces. - There are three grooves 3 at the bottom surface of the
flange 6 protruding forward from thesash 1. The grooves 3 extend along the length direction of the sash. A sealingstrip 4 is mounted inside the groove 3 at the corner of the flange and the exterior surface of the bottom sash part. Referring to fig.2, the sealing strip has aflange 10 along its length direction. Theflange 10 inserts into thegrooves 3, 9. The sealing strip also has an O-shapedsealing edge 11 and a wing-shapedsealing edge 12. The O-shaped sealing edge has a better elasticity, . When being pressed to theframe 2 by thesash 1, it can effectively seal the gap between the two. Two sealingstrips grooves 3, 9 at the comer. When the window closes, they are pressed by the two surfaces of the sash, so the sealing strips are pressed tightly and stick to the frame, thus achieve a better sealing effect. Also the sealing strips are difficult to move when being pressed, plus being nailed to theframe 1 by the nail (not shown), so the sealing strips won't fall off easily. - For the three grooves 3 on the bottom surface of the flange, the two ends of the grooves are connected, thus not only three sealing structures are formed by mounting sealing strip of one integrated structure, but also two closed sealing spaces are formed among the three sealing strips. Therefore, it achieves a better sealing effect. In the embodiment, the sealing strip is not mounted in the two preceding grooves 3, but due to the two grooves at the connecting surface between the
sash 1 and theframe 2, the wind or sound wave that enters here will be depressurized by the two grooves. So the air or sound wave that further enters the gap will be weakened, thus a certain wind resistant and sound insulating effect can be still achieved. - Due to the sealing effect of the groove 3 and two sealing
strips
Of course, the groove for mounting the sealing strip can be placed at the corresponding place of the frame. Also the position and quantity of the sealing strips can be changed according to the actual situation.
