Definitions
- the present invention relates to a coupling device intended for the transmission of information and ignition energy between a weapon and ammunition.
- the weapon in the association of a weapon and an ammunition, includes an electronic firing system allowing to act on the ammunition which, as to it, is equipped with electronic means programmable by the firing system and includes a pyrotechnic charge and an initiator to fire the ammunition under the control of the firing system.
- This one is able to send to the ammunition not only programming and control signals, but also the firing pulse which makes it possible to ignite the pyrotechnic charge via initiator.
- the ammunition includes a container that can be placed on the firing system and housing a plurality of cartridges.
- Each of these cartridges includes a charge of decoy elements, a pyrotechnic charge and a electric initiator intended to ignite this pyrotechnic charge.
- cartridges are drawn successively by a sequential control provided by the shooting system.
- EP 0 798 535 it is known to communicate an initiator of a ammunition with a weapon firing system via a firing circuit in which is inserted a connection which galvanically establishes electrical continuity between the weapon and the ammunition.
- the electric initiator comprises at least one contact to connect to the firing system to pass the current, the return of this can be ensured by the case, the socket or the body of the cartridge or of the ammunition.
- this contact must include a part housed in the ammunition and a part complementary disposed in the firing system, an elastic device being necessary to guarantee good electrical contact and to overcome constraints geometric positioning of the cartridge relative to the firing system, when the ammunition is placed relative to the latter.
- the initiator includes a current transformer whose primary is part of the ignition circuit and whose secondary transmits to the electronics of this initiator the energy necessary to its operation, as well as the signals carrying the information to be communicated.
- This current transformer is located entirely in the cartridge (or in the ammunition).
- the object of the invention is to provide a coupling device between a shooting and its ammunition to overcome the drawbacks of the technique earlier.
- the subject of the invention is therefore a coupling device intended for the transmission of information and ignition energy between a firing system and a ammunition comprising at least one pyrotechnic unit placed against a surface support of a breech belonging to the firing system, the coupling device comprising, to allow the transfer of said information and said energy, to at least a first coupling part housed in said surface of the cylinder head and at at least a second coupling part housed in said pyrotechnic unit, characterized in that said first and second coupling parts are respectively in relation of energy coupling between them by being galvanically separate from each other.
- the pyrotechnic unit of the ammunition can be simply placed against the bearing surface of the cylinder head without engagement mechanics of the coupling parts. Furthermore, the coupling parts which can be incorporated respectively in the cylinder head and in the pyrotechnic unit, it becomes easy to ensure perfect sealing of the cylinder head and the unit pyrotechnics facilitating the use of the firing / ammunition system assembly in severe humidity and / or pressure conditions. Finally, no mechanical part elastic is no longer necessary.
- the invention also relates to a decoy system with ammunition with multiple cartridge comprising a coupling device as defined above in its version comprising a plurality of first coupling parts distributed in said bearing surface and second coupling parts placed respectively in said cartridges.
- the embodiment of the invention which will be described relates to a ammunition for decoy launchers.
- the invention can be applied in a more general to any set of a weapon and ammunition, the latter being have one or more cartridges, it being understood that a munition for decoy launchers in most cases includes a plurality of cartridges.
- FIG. 1 shows such a cartridge designated by the reference 1. It is placed in a container 2 against the bearing surface 3 of a cylinder head 4 forming part a firing system 5 comprising a mechanical part 5a and a device control and ignition electronics 5b.
- the cartridge 1 includes in particular an initiator 6 of the pyrotechnic charge (not drawn) of the cartridge 1.
- the firing system 5 can be mounted on the structure of an aircraft A for example.
- the electronics 5b of the firing system 5 and that of the initiator 6 can be designed in accordance with the description of the aforementioned European patent. They are not therefore not described in detail. It will be recalled, however, that the electronics 5b is capable of sending to initiator 6 a chopped current with a duty cycle and a frequency corresponding to the data to be transmitted to the initiator 6. The electronics 5b is also able to send the initiator an ignition pulse to bring fire the cartridge 1. Furthermore, preferably, the electronics of the initiator 6 can return information in the form of pulses to the firing system, in particular for let him know his status.
- This coupling device 7 comprises a first coupling part 8 housed in the base 4 of the firing system 5 and flush with the support surface 3. It also includes a second coupling part 9 housed in the part lower part of the cartridge 1 by being flush with its lower surface, that is to say that which is intended to come into contact with the bearing surface 3. It will be noted that the term "lower” is used here for the convenience of description, the munition being able to principle be implemented in any position in space.
- the cartridge 1 is coupled to the firing system 5 without any galvanic contact between them.
- cartridge 1 is simply placed on the support surface 3 and held in the container 2 so as to be blocked only laterally in it (by means which have not been shown).
- the coupling device 7 is of the inductive type.
- cartridge 1 and the 5 firing system can also use an electro-optical coupling device.
- it may include at least one bidirectional optical coupler a first part of which is arranged in the firing system 3 and the second part in the cartridge 1.
- bidirectional couplers are commercially available and therefore do not require a detailed description here. Note, however, that it is better to use laser couplers in order to transmit enough power to the initiator 6 during the ignition of the cartridge 1.
- the first coupling part 8 (hereinafter called "primary") comprises a block 10 in one magnetic material, ferrite being a preferred material.
- This block 10 constitutes a magnetic half-circuit. It is housed in a cavity 11 of the cylinder head 4 and in the example described, it has a generally cylindrical shape. An annular groove central 12 is provided on the side facing the bearing surface 3. A coil 13 is placed in the groove 12. It is connected to the electronics 5b of the firing system 5.
- the second coupling part 9 (hereinafter called “secondary") of the device coupling 7 comprises a block 14 made of a magnetic material such as ferrite, and housed in a cavity 15 of the cartridge 1.
- the block 14 has a general shape cylindrical and an annular central groove 16 is formed there. In this groove 16 a coil 17 is placed. It is connected to the electronics of the initiator 6.
- Block 14 constitutes a magnetic half-circuit, complementary to that of the firing system 5, when the cartridge 1 is correctly placed in the container 2.
- the coils 13 and 17, as blocks 10 and 14 must be coaxial, which results in a good inductive coupling between primary 8 and secondary 9. It is also important that the primary and secondary are respectively flush with the surfaces opposite cartridge 1 and cylinder head 4 in order to reduce the air gap to a negligible value between the two magnetic blocks 10 and 14. However, they do not have to be centered relative to the body of the cartridge 1.
- the ammunition used includes a plurality of cartridges 1 and the container 2 has a suitable shape to house these cartridges.
- the firing system 3 can then be arranged to put them fire sequentially according to a procedure known to specialists.
- decoy launchers generally use cartridges having a dimensioning which is now standardized according to essentially two forms.
- cartridges of generally cylindrical shape based circular These circular-based cartridges are standardized with diameters of 19 mm, 40 mm or 60 mm, and an equal height for all these versions of 150 mm.
- the other shape has a body with a square or rectangular base, respectively an area of one square inch or 1 x 2 square inches. In this case, the height is eight inches.
- the coupling device which has just been described, whether it is of the inductive type or of the type electro-optic, allows not to use for each of the types of forms mentioned only one type of combination of a firing system and a cartridge ammunition despite the differentiation of standardized dimensions that we can find in both types of shapes.
- Figures 1 to 3 illustrate this dimensional adaptability of a network of coupling devices according to the invention as regards the circular base cartridges.
- the network of coupling devices 7 comprises in the system firing 5 a plurality of primaries 8 arranged in a network. These 8 primaries are distributed in this network in such a way that they form a subset for each standardized dimensional version of the cartridges 1 and that, when the cartridges are placed in container 2, the primaries 8 of such a sub-assembly are in the position of inductive coupling (or if necessary electro-optical) with a secondary 9 of a cartridge 1.
- Each of the primaries 8 of this network is designed in the manner already described previously, while the cavities 11 are juxtaposed and separated by recesses 18 in which interconnections 19 pass between the coils 13.
- These and these interconnections 19 are preferably made in the form of a multilayer printed circuit, the terminals of the coils 13 passing through notches 20 ( Figure 2) made in the blocks 10 of magnetic material.
- the cartridges of the embodiment described being of circular base and account given that three dimensions of such cartridges are standardized, the distribution of the primaries 8 is that shown in FIG. 3.
- the circles A, B and C respectively indicate the perimeters of the 19 mm cartridges, 40 mm and 60 mm in diameter to be accommodated in container 2 and the shaded circles D the perimeters of the primaries 8 placed in the cylinder head 4.
- 90 primaries 8 arranged in staggered rows in groups of five; they are numbered from 1 to 90 in figure 3.
- the coupling device that it is made in a single or networked, can easily be waterproofed for relates to these two coupling parts 8 and 9, whether they are of the inductive type or electro-optics.
- Figures 4 and 5 show two possible embodiments of the coils of a coupling device according to the invention.
- the turns of these coils are made in the form of conductive tracks of a multilayer printed circuit 21 the conductive tracks being suitably connected to each other to obtain a winding using bushings conductors 22 passing through the insulating layers of the printed circuit (see Figures 4 and 5 in a)).
- each of the superimposed tracks 25 and 26 is formed of a spiral with several turns which are wound in opposite directions in the overlapping tracks.
- Crossings 22 connect the tracks of the different layers 25 and 26.
- the distribution primaries 8 in the bearing surface 3 will be made with a pitch between them equal to the length of one side of a square-based cartridge in an X-Y matrix (not one thumb). In this way, the ammunition can accommodate the two dimensions of cartridges whether square or rectangular.
