Definitions

  • the invention relates to a thermoplastic monofilament for bristles which are exposed in use to increased humidity.
  • Bristles made of thermoplastic materials are used for brushes of various types, brushes and the like. They are exposed to very different physical and chemical stresses which result, on the one hand, from their functional use in brushing, brushing, polishing, applying media or the like, and on the other hand from the conditions prevailing directly during use or at the point of use.
  • the auxiliary media used in the use such as detergents, cleaning agents, cosmetics, water or the like may be mentioned.
  • ambient conditions at the place of use are in particular an increased humidity to call, which in interaction with moist auxiliary media contributes to the fact that the moist auxiliary media do not dry.
  • Bristles must therefore have a property profile that meets these very different requirements. This is exemplified in a toothbrush, in which the different requirements are particularly clear because the bristles initially have an extremely small diameter, which is approximately between 0.05 and 0.4 mm. Furthermore, the bristles are arranged at a small distance from each other and even tightly packed in bundles. On the other hand, bristles for toothbrushes must show a good high bending behavior in order to dodge on the one hand in the purely elastic range and on the other hand to be able to return to the initial position without deformation (Wiederaufrichtgins).
  • the bristles Due to the large number of forms of movement and the individual pressure on brushing teeth, depending on the user, the bristles have to have a good fatigue strength and fatigue strength, taking into account a reasonable service life. Furthermore, the plastic must be such that the bristle can be processed in mechanical or thermal manufacturing processes, including in particular the attachment of the bristles on the bristle carrier. Finally, the bristles must be rounded at the end of use, on the one hand to produce a gentle, yet sufficient brushing effect on the tooth surfaces and in the interdental spaces, on the other hand, to affect the tooth enamel by excessive hardness, by edges or the like or to injure the gums.
  • the bristles are permanently loaded with moisture due to the auxiliary media used, such as dentifrices, water etc, as well as by the prevailing at the place of use, eg in the bathroom increased humidity, with moisture especially since drying on account of the dense bristle stocking on the one hand and the environmental conditions on the other hand would only be possible over a very long period of time.
  • bristles made of other thermoplastic monofilaments which have already been proven in brushes of other types.
  • bristles made of thermoplastic polyesters should be mentioned here, which show a comparable bending behavior and bending behavior, but have not yet been able to assert themselves with toothbrushes. The reason for this is firstly the greater hardness and the associated risk of injury from gums and enamel. They are also prone to splicing and burring during mechanical processing, especially when rounding the utility-side ends. Finally, they show a strong dirt binding, so can be cleaned only by rinsing the toothbrush poor.
  • a generic thermoplastic monofilament in the form of an at least two-layer co-extrudate for bristles is in the WO97 / 14830 A described and has a core and a shell, wherein the core and / or the shell may consist of a polymer blend of polyamide (PA) and a thermoplastic polyester (PE). About certain mixing ratios PA / PE, however, nothing is said in this document.
  • PA polyamide
  • PE thermoplastic polyester
  • DD 103933 A From the DD 103933 A is a bristle of a mixture of polyamide (PA) and a thermoplastic polyester (PE) known, wherein the mixing ratio PA / PE should be between 95/5 to 50/50 mass%.
  • PA polyamide
  • PE thermoplastic polyester
  • the bristles are not a co-extrudate.
  • the US 4,507,361 describes a bristle made of a thermoplastic matrix in which abrasive filling materials are distributed. It is not a coextrudate but a bristle made in a one-component process, where the thermoplastic matrix can consist of 70% to 90% polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and 10 to 30% polyamide (PA).
  • PET polyethylene terephthalate
  • PA polyamide
  • coextruded filaments are known (EP 0 763 611 A1 ), which consist of a polyester core and a polyamide sheath, but here are other property profiles in the foreground than is the case with bristles.
  • the invention has for its object to provide a monofilament for bristles whose property profile can be optimally adapted to the desired functional-technical requirements and to the ambient conditions in use at reduced material costs.
  • thermoplastic monofilament forming the starting material for bristles in the form of an at least two-layer co-extrudate having the features of claim 1.
  • the co-extrudate has a core and a jacket, wherein at least the jacket consists of a polymer mixture of at least one polyamide (PA) and at least one thermoplastic polyester (PE), wherein the mixing ratio PA / PE has a PA content of 10 to 30%. Mass% and a PE content of 70 to 90% mass% contains.
  • the concrete mixing ratio (PA / PE) is selected on the one hand in accordance with the technically functional properties relevant for the use of the bristle on the one hand and the environmental conditions prevailing at the place of use for the function of the bristle on the other hand.
  • mixtures of polymers form multiphase systems as are known from metal alloys. They behave in mixture differently than many low-molecular substances, for example, go into solution and form a single-phase system.
  • the cause lies in molecular interactions due to Van der Waals, dipole and hydrogen bridge forces, which are more effective with similar macromolecules than between different polymers in the mixed phase.
  • the degree of entanglement of the macromolecules and the gain in entropy play a role in mixing, which is also lower due to steric effects on macromoleins than on low molecular weight substances.
  • the proportions of the polymers in the blend for the extrusion of the thermoplastic monofilament can be optimally adjusted to the requirement profile of the bristle.
  • the bending behavior and the Wiederaufrichtspec in adjustment to bristle diameter and length as well as the specific use of the bristle can be adjusted.
  • it can adapt to the prevailing physical and chemical conditions at the place of use due to the media used there (dentifrices, cleaning agents, water, etc.) and the prevailing environmental conditions (dry or humid atmosphere, moisture retention in bristle trim, etc.).
  • the mixing ratio PA / PE can be varied within the stated limits, without the stability of the mixing phase being appreciably impaired.
  • the mixing ratio can be adapted to the bristle geometry, taking into account the environmental conditions at the place of use.
  • the smaller the cross-section of the bristle the higher the proportion of PE in the mixing ratio, in order to prevent the penetration of moisture into the thin cross-section and the concomitant impairment of the bending behavior and the re-erecting capacity.
  • the thermoplastic polyester is preferably a polyalkylene terephthalate (PAT), in particular polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) or a mixture thereof.
  • PAT polyalkylene terephthalate
  • PET polyethylene terephthalate
  • PBT polybutylene terephthalate
  • thermoplastic polyesters are not only particularly suitable for bristles with regard to their technological properties, but moreover they are considerably less expensive than the high-grade polyamides previously used for toothbrush bristles, such as PA 6.12.
  • a high proportion of PAT also gives the opportunity to replace high quality PA, at least in part, with lower quality and lower cost PA such as PA 6.
  • the polyamide component of the mixture can be selected, for example, from the group of higher polyamides, such as PA 6.10, PA 6.12, PA 11, PA 12 on the one hand and the group of low-value polyamides, such as PA 6, PA 6.6 on the other hand, taking into account the requirement that the mixed phase must have sufficient stability.
  • the co-extrudate can have the two layers in concentric form, ie in the form of a core and a shell. Instead, the co-extrudate can also have several monofilaments, which are embedded in a second layer defining the outer cross-section of the monofilament. Further, since coextrudate may consist of a core which defines only part of the circumference, while the second layer forms circumferentially complete segments, for example a substantially rectangular cross-section, predominantly of one layer and only in the corners of the other layer is formed.
  • the second layer may consist of a single polyamide or a blend of polyamides, as, conversely, the second layer of a thermoplastic polyester or a blend of such polyesters can be formed.
  • the co-extrudate consists of a core and a sheath
  • the core consists of a PAT or a mixture of polyalkylene esters
  • the sheath is formed from a polyamide or a polyamide mixture.
  • the core essentially determines the bending behavior and the re-erectability, while the jacket is essentially responsible for the brushing action, for dispensing application media or cleaning media.
  • a bristle has an increased water absorption in the shell, but this does not affect the strength property or only slightly, since this is significantly determined by the core with its significantly reduced moisture absorption.
  • the core can also consist only of a thermoplastic polyester or a polyester mixture, since it does not directly participate in the brushing action, while the jacket consists of the polymer mixture according to the invention.
  • the polymer mixture according to the invention can be present both in the core and in the sheath, wherein the mixing ratio in favor of the PE or PAT portion can be raised in the core in favor of the PA content in the core.
  • the core may be formed as a hollow core to receive media and deliver it at the free end of the bristle.
  • a bristle consisting of core and sheath when the sheath is composed of the polymer mixture according to the invention, leads to a better quality of the mechanical processing of the bristle ends, in particular permits perfect rounding without edge formation.
