Anschließend wird die Signatur entlang ihrer Mittellinie von einem im Falzmesserzylinder angeordneten Falzmesser in eine Falzklappe oder in Falzwalzen gestoßen, so dass ein Querfalz entsteht.
Zum Schneiden, Falzen und Transportieren von Signaturen ist es oft erforderlich, dass der effektive Außendurchmesser des Falzzylinders bzw. Falzmeserzylinders verändert werden muß, um eine exakte Bearbeitung von Signaturen unterschiedlicher Seitenzahlen zu ermöglichen. Die Dicke der Signatur kann - je nach gewünschtem Endprodukt - beträchtlich variieren. Dazu ist es bekannt, an einem Falzzylinder bzw. Falzmesserzylinder zur Veränderung des effektiven Durchmessers des Falzzylinders bzw. des Falzmesserzylinders verstellbare Expansions-Segmente vorzusehen.
Ein Expansions-Segment bezeichnet einen Abschnitt eines Zylinders, der einen Außenabschnitt des Zylinders bildet und verstellbar ist, so dass es den effektiven Durchmesser des Zylinders definiert.

Durch die Verwendung des endlosen Antriebsmittels und/oder Verstellmittels und die oben genannte Anordnung wird ein gleichbleibender Übertragungswinkel erreicht. Bedeutungsvoll ist, dass der Antrieb mittels eines endlosen Antriebmittels und/oder Verstellmittels zur Verstellung der auf der Exzenterspindel angeordneten Expansions-Segmente unempfindlich gegen Verschmutzung durch Papierstaub ist. Der Falzzylinder 1 ist auf einer Welle 10 gelagert. Auf der Welle 10 ist ein zentrales Antriebsrad 11 drehbar gelagert. Das zentrale Antriebsrad 11 steht mit dem Übersetzungsrad 9 Ober ein endloses Antriebsmittel 12 in Verbindung. Die Antriebsräder 7 und die Spannrollen 8 stehen über ein weiteres endloses Antriebsmittel 13, hier als Verstellmittel 13 bezeichnet, in Verbindung. Die Antriebsräder 7 und Spannrollen 8 sind zumindest teilweise vom Verstellmittel 13 umschlungen.
