Definitions
- the invention relates to a carrier bag for transporting cooled and/or frozen products, comprising a thermally insulated, closeable storage space.
- cooler bag is known in commerce and is used, for instance, for the transport of purchased cooled and/or frozen products from a cold storage space in a shop to a personal cold storage space, or when relatively smaller amounts of cooled food products are transferred to a different cold storage space.
- carrier bag is meant to include a unit which can be carried by a person and which is provided with a handle or carrying straps or the like.
- the storage space generally has a contents varying between, for instance, 5 and 50 liters.
- the known bag is defective in that it provides insufficient cooling and/or the use of possible cooling elements does not promote the ease of use. This is a drawback as a result of which, in practice, relatively little use is made of such cooler bags. Further it appears, that the cooling capacity is little adequate, so that the known cooler bag is relatively unsuitable for keeping foods cooled or frozen for a longer period of time, i.e. for several hours. As a result, the risk arises that the cooled/frozen products perish. This is a problem the more so, if consumers or small traders, for example entrepreneurs in the hotel and restaurant business, purchase these products. In practice, it appears hardly possible to offer sufficient guarantees, in the chain of suppliers, in particular in the link between wholesale and small trade, that cooled/frozen products have not been at an undesirably high temperature.
- the object of the invention is to provide a solution by which the risk of undesired temperature increase of cooled/frozen products during transport is considerably reduced.
- the invention provides a carrier bag as mentioned in the opening paragraph, wherein the carrier bag comprises a holder for receiving dry ice, which holder is provided with a gas permeable outflow part arranged in the storage space.
- the invention renders it possible, with the aid of extremely cold dry ice of approximately -80°C, to provide a cooling and/or freezing space with a desired temperature varying between approximately -22 °C and approximately -4°C for freezing and between approximately 2°C and approximately 7°C for cooling.
- a cooler bag is provided which is considerably better capable of maintaining the cooled products at the desired temperature.
- a further advantage of the use of dry ice is that no residual product is left.
- the holder is gas permeable and is provided at the top side of the storage space, such that subliming carbon dioxide flows into the storage space at the top side of the bag.
- an evenly cooled storage space can be created because the cold carbon dioxide flows out of the outflow part from top to bottom.
- the bottom side of the carrier bag has an undesirably low temperature while the top side of the bag does not attain the desired cooling temperature.
- the dry ice element is used in the form of a block of 16x16x2 cm, although also other sizes are possible, such as smaller blocks, tablets or grains. With such a size, the element has a contact surface such, that optimal cooling properties are provided, i.e. the element does not sublime too rapidly, so that the refrigeration would be too strong, or too slowly, so that the refrigeration would be too weak.
- the holder comprises an insulating material, thermally insulating the holder from the storage space, at least in part.
- a temperature range of the storage space can be set, in particular, a predetermined thermal contact with the storage space can be provided, so that the cooler bag, if desired, can be set at a cooling temperature or at a freezing temperature.
- the insulating material of the holder can be partly removed so that an adjustable thermal contact with the storage space is provided.
- the holder can then be detachable from the cooling carrier bag, so that a dry ice element can be inserted into the holder outside of the bag, to be brought into the bag as an independent unit, possibly in the form of a disposable product.
- the storage space comprises spacers, such as for instance a rack, for keeping the cooled and/or frozen products at a distance from the bottom.
- spacers such as for instance a rack
- an inner holder can be included which is thermally insulated relative to the storage space.
- different temperature zones can be created in the carrier bag, for instance a cooling zone in the inner holder having a temperature varying between 2 and 7°C, and a freezing zone in the part of the storage space located outside the inner holder, having a temperature varying between -22 and - 4°C.
- the invention further relates to a holder for use in a cooler bag according to any one of the previous aspects.
- the holder can comprise an insulated wall, which can be removed from the holder, at least in part, so that an adjustable thermal contact with a storage space to be refrigerated is provided.
- Carrier bag 1 of Fig. 1 is provided with carrying straps 2, fastened to the bag 1 at fastening points 3.
- the bag 1 is provided with insulated walls 4, consisting of, for example, a thick, flexible fleece material.
- the walls 4 enclose a storage space 5, in which products such as foods can be preserved cooled or frozen.
- the storage space 5 is provided with a lid 6, preferably provided at the top side, which can thermally insulate the storage space and can close it off with the aid of, for instance, fasteners 7.
- a gas permeable holder 8 is provided for receiving a dry ice element (not shown).
- the holder is represented as a small net, but can also have different types of gas permeable walls.
- only one holder 8 is represented, but several holders can be included in the lid, having, for instance, a mutually different thermal insulation.
- a holder can be selected for the desired type of cooling. For instance, a holder can be selected which is thermally insulated, if products are to be preserved in cool condition for a longer period of time, and an open holder which is not insulated can be selected providing a direct thermal contact with the storage space, such as for instance the above-mentioned net 8 if the products are to be stored at freezing temperature.
- a thermal insulation degassing of the dry ice element can be limited, such that the refrigeration in the storage space is reduced and/or the cooling can be maintained longer.
- a dry ice element 9 is included in a gas permeable holder 8, provided at the top side of the storage space 5.
- the holder 8 comprises an outflow part, for instance in the form of a small net, through which subliming carbon dioxide 10 flows out of the holder 8 into the storage space 5.
- a rack 12 is provided in the inside space for preventing the carbon dioxide from cooling off the bottom of the underlying products to an undue extreme.
- FIG. 3 an alternative embodiment of a carrier bag 1 with a thermally insulated inner holder 13 is represented.
- different temperature zones can be created in the carrier bag, for instance a cooling zone in the inside holder 13 with a temperature varying between 2 and 7 °C, and a freezing zone in the part of storage space located outside the inner holder, with a temperature varying between -22 and -4 °C.
- a cooling zone in the inside holder 13 with a temperature varying between 2 and 7 °C
- a freezing zone in the part of storage space located outside the inner holder, with a temperature varying between -22 and -4 °C.
- FIG. 3 an embodiment is represented of a holder 14 accommodating a dry ice element 9 located at a lower position.
- the holder 14 contains highly insulated gas tight walls 15 extending as far as a higher outflow opening 16. Through degassing of the dry ice element 9, carbon dioxide is urged to the outflow opening 16, where the gas flows into the storage space and refrigerates in a manner described with reference to Fig. 1.
- the holder offers the advantage that larger amounts of dry ice can be stored in the cooler bag for a longer period of time.
- the holder 17 of Fig. 4 is manufactured from multi-layered insulating walls 18, 19 which can have mutually different thermal insulation values.
- the first wall 18 is a net through which the dry ice element 9 is brought into direct contact with the surroundings.
- the second wall 19 limits the thermal contact of the dry ice element 9, so that the element 9 is insulated from the surroundings and the refrigeration is reduced.
- the second wall 19 is connected to the first wall 18 by means of a fastener 20, such as a tear strip, and can be removed therefrom or at least be folded away (indicated in the Figure with arrow P), so that, at will, a freezing or refrigerating effect is provided by the holder.
- the holder represented in Fig. 4 is detachable and can be included in the cooler bag via suitable connecting means such as, for instance, adhesive tape or a carrying net (not shown).
