Definitions
- the invention relates to a nodular cast iron alloy for cast iron products having plastic ductility, wherein the nodular cast iron alloy contains as non-iron constituents at least the elements C, Si, Mn, Cu, Mg, S and as admixtures of one or more elements from group IIIb of the periodic table.
- Spheroidal cast iron alloys are used in automotive engineering for the production of cast parts which have to withstand high impact loads, for example transverse links, as parts of the wheel suspension of the driven wheels, which still have to remain intact even after an accident.
- the castings may be deformed in the so-called crash test, but not break.
- Commercially available gray cast iron alloys tend to break when subjected to heavy blows.
- a process for the production of ductile iron alloys with product inclusions is known, which are plastically deformed during the machining of the products produced.
- the plastically deformable inclusions serve as a lubricant during machining.
- the inclusions consist of about 50% SiO 2 , 25% CaO, 15% MgO and 10% Al 2 O 3 .
- the base alloy is made low in sulfur and deoxygenated with a reagent containing CaC 2 , CaO, Ca, Al and Mg prior to the actual treatment with magnesium. A metal analysis of the products thus produced is not disclosed.
- GB-A-832666 discloses iron alloys containing carbon, silicon and boron.
- the alloys do not contain magnesium, whereby the graphite formation is not spherical, but compact or lamellar. Higher elongation values are only achieved after a subsequent heat treatment.
- the alloys are treated with bismuth and tellurium and exhibit a predominantly pearlitic matrix, which can be refined after the subsequent heat treatment, but does not disappear.
- a cylinder liner for an internal combustion engine is known.
- the structure has Zementit- / Steaditanteile in a pearlitic matrix, resulting in a low plastic deformability results.
- a nodular cast iron alloy for cast iron products having plastic ductility the nodular cast iron alloy containing as non-iron constituents at least the elements C, Si, Mn, Cu, Mg, S and as admixtures of one or more elements from group IIIb of the periodic table, wherein the alloy contains as admixture at least the element boron and wherein the Si content is more than 2.4%.
- the Perlitanteil is reduced in the structure of the cast iron products and that a ferritic microstructure can be ensured. This is achieved by the alloy containing 2 to 200 ppm boron as admixture.
- the core idea of the invention is to provide a cast iron alloy which is particularly suitable for load-bearing parts, for example for the suspension in the automotive industry.
- the load-bearing parts must not break but only deform.
- the deformation should not be elastic but plastic.
- the deformability of the parts should be plastic and as large as possible, should not lead to breakage of the parts and should not be reversible.
- a control arm for a front wheel suspension of a nodular cast iron passenger car having the following chemical composition: 3.5% C, 2.7% Si, 0.16% Mn, 0.06% Cu, 0.043% Mg, 0.002% S, 200 ppm sum of the elements from group IIIb of the periodic table (B, Al, Ga, In, TI), has a structure with a maximum of 15% perlite.
- the graphite formation in the microstructure measured according to the standard DIN EN ISO 945, is more than 90% Form VI, and the size of the graphite spheres in the microstructure is in the classes 7-8.
- composition and the. Properties of the casting are compared with a conventional spheroidal cast alloy called GJS-400-15.
- This composition can be illustrated by the measurement results of an instrumented impact test. This impact test is performed as a simulation for the wheel suspension abuse test Passenger car.
- the suspension still carries the passenger car after a collision so far that the passenger car can be driven to the next workshop.
- the supporting part of the suspension such as the wishbone, which was permanently and irreversibly deformed by the collision, but is still unbreakable and stable, must be replaced.
- Diagram 1 shows the measurement results of the impact tests on a wishbone of a passenger car on the right side. As comparison values are shown in the diagram 1 on the left side, the measurement results of an identical casting, which was made of commercially available nodular cast iron. From diagram 1 it can be seen that the total energy consumption in the control arm during the impact test is more than 2200 J. It can also be seen from diagram 1 that the deformation value in the impact test is more than 75% higher than in the case of a comparable casting made from a conventional nodular cast iron alloy. The deformation of the wishbone, expressed in mm, measured as the difference between two measuring points on the casting, before and after the impact test, is more than 15 mm. For comparable castings from a conventional ductile iron alloy, this deformation is usually less than 9 mm. The maximum force absorbed by the wishbone is between 3000 and 3500 kN. The instrumented impact test is performed on a Rosand impact tester.
- Wishbone for a passenger car which are made of the inventive nodular cast iron alloy with at least 2.4% Si content and at least the element boron as admixture, and which are subjected to the casting cleaning as gentle as possible surface treatment, are characterized by a high plastic non-reversible Deformability.
- the load-bearing parts of the suspension of an automobile break during the crash test, which simulates a particular accident situation, not and remain intact.
- the present cast alloy is also suitable for all other vehicle parts that may deform under extreme loads, but may not break.
