Definitions
- This invention relates to a dispenser for pressurized liquids or creams originating from the stem of a pump or valve and expelled to the outside through a discharge hole provided at the free end of a tube rotatably mounted on an operating head.
- Dispensers of this type are well known and widely used, especially to spray liquids into the oral cavity of the person using the dispenser.
- Such dispensers have a long tube which is rotatable between a rest position in which it lies parallel and adjacent to the body of the container containing the substance to be dispensed (so as to occupy little space during transport and storage) and a utilization position in which the tube is rotated to lie substantially perpendicular to the container body (to enable the tube to be inserted into the oral cavity).
- All dispensers of the stated type comprise an operating head having a seat for using the free end of the pump or valve stem, and a lateral seat (which rotatably retains one end of the tube), the tube substantially consisting of an elongate hollow tubular body one end of which communicates with or can be put into communication with the lateral seat of the operating head and, via a passage formed in the head, with the seat housing the pump stem, at the other end (i.e. the free end) of the tubular body there being provided the discharge nozzle for the pressurized fluid.
- a typical movable tube dispenser of such type is disclosed in the US-A-3,148,806: it has the serious drawback that the volume of the tube cavity is necessarily relatively large, with the result that a corresponding quantity of liquid can stagnate within it when dispensing ceases, and which may be costly, may deteriorate on contact with air, and may drip from the tube open end when this is rotated into its rest position parallel to the container axis, with such open end facing downwards.
- the tube dispensing nozzle is provided in a supplementary body separate from the tube press-fitted into its open free end, which itself represents a serious danger because it can happen that this supplementary body becomes detached from the end of the tube and violently expelled into the oral cavity of the user, by the effect of the high pressure of the dispensed liquid.
- the WO 97/26203 discloses a dispenser with a movable tube formed by an elongate tubular element and by an insert housed and retained in the cavity of such element to define with it a narrow longitudinal channel for passage of pressurized liquid substance along the movable tube to be sprayed through a nozzle: in such a way stagnation of significant amounts of liquid within the tube at rest is prevented and the hereabove first mentioned drawbacks are avoided.
- tubular element forming part of the movable tube shown in the WO 97/26203 is formed by two distinct component parts coupled together, one of such parts having a profiled end rotatably housed in a lateral seat provided in the operating dispenser head and the other part being provided with the discharge nozzle at its free end and having the above mentioned insert housed and retained within its cavity.
- One drawback of such dispenser is that the movable tube is expensive because it is formed by three component parts which must be coupled together in two distinct steps.
- the objects of this invention are therefore to provide a dispenser with movable tube which is safe in use, cheap to be produced and in which the volume of the cavity necessary for passage of the pressurized substance is very small.
- a dispenser for dispensing pressurized fluid substances through a movable tube comprising an operating head having a lateral seat rotatably housing a profiled end of a movable hollow tube formed by an elongate tubular element and by an insert housed and retained in the cavity of such element to define with it a narrow longitudinal channel for passage of the pressurised substance from the profiled end of the tube to its other end where the cavity of the tubular element is closed by a wall in which a discharge hole for the substance to be dispensed is provided, said lateral seat in the head being connected via a passage provided in the head to a seat for housing the free end of a pump or valve stem, the profiled end of the tube having an aperture which connects the tube cavity to said head passage when the dispenser is in its utilization condition, characterised in that said tubular element is one piece made and has a shaped end portion forming said profiled end of the movable tube, the cavity of the tubular element situated at its shaped end being open for the
- said narrow longitudinal channel extending along said tube is defined by at least one longitudinal groove extending along said insert and by at least one longitudinal rib projecting into the cavity of the hollow element and engaging said groove, or vice versa.
- Figures 1 to 4 show a first embodiment of the dispenser of the invention mounted on a cylindrical container 1 containing a fluid substance to be dispensed through the stem 2 of a pump or valve 3 of any known type fixed onto the container 1 by means of an endpiece or collar ring 4.
- the dispenser comprises an operating head 5 and a tube 6 secured to the head 5 and rotatable about it between a rest position ( Figure 1) in which the tube is positioned adjacent to the body of the container 1 and a utilization position (such as that shown in Figure 4) in which the tube is rotated into a position removed from the container body.
- the head 5 comprises a seat for using the free end of the stem 2 and a cylindrical lateral seat defined within the interior of an appendix 8 projecting on one side of the head, this cylindrical seat being in communication with the seat 7 via a passage 9 visible in Figure 1, from which it can be seen that the outer surface of the appendix 8 is also substantially cylindrical and that in it there is provided an annular groove the purpose of which is explained hereinafter.
- the tube 6 comprises an elongate hollow element 10 the free end of which is closed by a wall 11 (formed integral with the element 10) in which a hole 12 is provided, through which the pressurized substance can be dispensed to the outside, its other end being open as can be seen from Figure 1.
- the tube 6 also comprises an insert 13 consisting of a thin long rod inserted into the cavity of the element 10, the free end of this cavity being sealed by an enlarged insert head 14 which is forced into the free end of said cavity, where it remains securely fixed by the action of a series of small teeth 15.
- a chamber 19 which communicates with the channel 17 and also with the passage 9 of the head 5 via a hole 20 passing through hollow appendix 21 projecting laterally from the element 10, this appendix being rotatably housed in the cylindrical seat defined by the appendix 8 of the head 5.
- the tube appendix extends within a cavity provided in a body 23 projecting laterally from the element 10, from this cavity there projecting an annular rib 24 which engages the annular groove provided in the outer surface of the appendix 8 of the head 5, to mechanically fix the tube to the dispenser head.
- the body 23 is of such a length that when the tube is in its rest position ( Figure 1), the body 23 interferes with the upper surface of the pump collar ring 4, to prevent pump operation.
- Figure 1 By merely changing the dimensions of the body 23 one and the same dispenser can be adapted for pumps or valves having different distances between the free ends of their stems and the upper surface of the respective collar ring for fixing on the container.
- the tube 6 can be easily rotated about the axes of the appendices 8 and 21 to pass from the rest position of Figure 1 to the utilization position shown in Figure 4.
- a tooth 30 insertable selectively into a plurality of notches or recesses (for simplicity not numbered on the drawings, but clearly visible in Figure 3) provided in the opposing surface of the body 23.
- the described dispenser consists of only three component parts, all easily prepared by plastic moulding.
- Another important characteristic of the dispenser of the invention is that the tube element 10 can be constructed of any desired size and the cavity within it can be of relatively large cross-section, as can the insert 13, even though defining between themselves a longitudinal channel 17 which can have a cross-section as small as desired. This means that the entire insert can be constructed very simply, by plastic moulding.
- a further important characteristic of the dispenser derives from its structure and consists of the fact that if the pressure of the dispensed liquid substance should cause the insert 13 to emerge violently form the hollow body 10, the insert would be expelled from the opposite end of the tube to that containing the discharge hole 12, so avoiding any danger of injury to the dispenser user.
- the hollow body 31 of the tube has a spherical head 32 at its end secured to the head 5, whereas the insert 42 does not comprise the head 14 (which was provided in the initially described embodiment), so that the longitudinal channel 17 of the tube is also open at the spherical head 32.
- the head 32 is rotatably housed in a spherical seat provided in the appendix 33 of the head 5, so that the tube can be rotated between a rest position ( Figure 5) and a dispenser utilization position ( Figure 6) or vice versa, it being retained in each of these position by a pair of projections 34 projecting from the appendix 33 in correspondence with the seat housing the spherical head 32 of the tube.
- the dispenser is formed such that when in its utilization position ( Figure 6) the longitudinal channel 17 of the tube is aligned and in sealed communication with the passage 9 in the head 5, whereas this passage is sealedly closed by the spherical head ( Figure 5) when the dispenser is in its rest position.
- the basic characteristics of the dispenser of Figures 5 and 6 are the same as those of the dispenser of Figures 1-4.
