Definitions
- EOL insufficiency of the power source
- This detection essentially based on the measurement of a minimum voltage of the battery, generally generates a particular behavior of the watch second hand level, behavior likely to attract attention of the user on the fact that he must change his battery as soon as possible.
- Document EP-A-591557 relates to an electronic watch comprising at at least two needles driven by at least one motor, means electronic devices arranged so as to position said hands on the dial so as to display internal data determined by said means electronic, including hourly data, as well as a source Power.
- Detection means deliver signals in case of Insufficient power source. During this detection, the position needles and the value of the corresponding electronic counters are stored in a non-volatile memory provided for this purpose.
- Document EP-A-285838 relates to an electronic watch comprising at at least two needles driven by at least one motor, means electronic devices arranged so as to position said hands on the dial so as to display internal data determined by said means electronic, including hourly data, as well as a source Power. According to this document, detection means deliver signals corresponding to insufficient power source.
- the object of the present invention is precisely to provide a simple and effective at this problem. It relates to an electronic watch comprising at least two needles driven by at least one motor, electronic means arranged so as to position said hands on the dial so as to display internal data determined by said electronic means, in particular hourly data, as well as a power source and means for detecting the insufficiency of this food source, characterized by the fact that said electronic means are arranged so as to bring and maintain all of the hands on reference positions when the voltage of said source insufficient to ensure correct display at all times said internal information by said needles but still sufficient to ensure proper functioning of said electronic means and allow these last to automatically restore said correct display of said information internal by the needles when the voltage of said power source becomes again sufficient to ensure such a display.
- Figure 1 shows by way of example and schematically the circuit of a watch according to the invention.
- Figure 2 shows by way of example and schematically means of detecting the insufficiency of the power source and the means associated with them.
- Figure 3 shows by way of example and schematically the different operating zones of the means of FIG. 2.
- Figure 4 shows by way of example and schematically a circuit allowing to put the means of Figure 2 in conditions of correct start-up when re-establishing the power source.
- Figure 5 shows by way of example and schematically a safety device allowing the position of the hands to be blocked during a battery change.
- FIG. 1 shows by way of example and schematically the circuit of a watch according to the invention.
- a watch 1 comprising three needles 2, 3, and 4, mounted on concentric axes.
- This watch includes control means in the form, inter alia, of the two buttons 5 and 6.
- the different needles 2, 3 and 4 are driven independently of each other by their own 7, 7 'and 7 "motor, but the invention also applies to watches where several needles are driven by the same motor as on the TWO TIMER.
- each motor is controlled by a combination of electronic circuits, 8, 8 'and 8 ", arranged in such a way to position the corresponding hands on the dial so as to display internal data, 9, 9 'and 9 ", delivered by the counting and control of watch 10.
- all of the functions of the electronic means represented on figure 1 can be carried out in sequential logic programmed by means of a microprocessor. They have have been represented schematically as a combination of circuits to facilitate understanding of the invention.
- the counting and control circuit 10 is connected to the pushers 5 and 6, and has a time base regulated by the quartz resonator 11 adjusted by the capacitive trimmer 12.
- the entire watch is powered by a source which could be either a battery, a Gold Cap or a accumulator charged by a generator or a battery of solar cells.
- a source which could be either a battery, a Gold Cap or a accumulator charged by a generator or a battery of solar cells.
- the Gold Cap 13 charged through the diode 14 by a group of photovoltaic cells 15, generally arranged on the watch face.
- the counting circuit and control supplies data 9 to the combination of circuits 8 for position the needle 2.
- This combination of circuits 8 includes a circuit for selection 16 whose output is connected to a comparator 17 also connected to the output of a logic circuit 18 whose state is representative of the position of hand 2 on the dial.
- Comparator 17 is connected to the control circuit of the motor 7, itself connected to the input of the logic circuit 18. We have here a control loop which tends to keep the outputs of the circuits equal 16 and 18. In the event of an inequality, comparator 17 acts on the control circuit of motor 7 and on logic circuit 18 so as to advance them step by step until the equality between the outputs of circuits 16 and 18 is restored. Thus needle 2 displays internal data determined by the electronic means as they are delivered to the output of the circuit selection 16. Likewise, needle 3 displays the data delivered at the outlet of the selection circuit 16 'via comparator 17' and circuit logic 18 ', while hand 4 displays the data delivered at the output of the 16 "selection circuit via the 17" comparison circuit and the 18 "logic circuit.
- Such systems have already been described and operate on watches which have been mentioned above. To make the system work correctly, it is necessary, as we said, that the state of the logic circuit 18 is representative of the position of the corresponding hand on the dial.
- the logic circuit 18 must have 60 states corresponding to the possible 60 positions of the hand on the dial, and its state 0 must correspond, for example, to the position of the hand at 12 o'clock (noon).
- 12h corresponds to the reference position of the hand corresponding to state 0 of logic circuit 18. This is the one we will use in the description, but we can theoretically choose as a reference any needle position corresponding to any state of the logic circuit 18.
- the motor 7 and the logic circuit 18 evolve in concert, and the synchronization between the display and the circuit 18 can be maintained without problem. It is not the same when the supply voltage drops below a critical threshold, or disappears. Thus after a battery change, the logic circuit 18 is put either in any state, or in state 0 if you do a POR (power on reset). Gold in the watches known and cited above, there is no way of knowing in which position the corresponding needle stopped. So there is the most often offset and the logic circuit 18 is no longer representative of the position of the needle on the dial. The same goes for the 18 'and 18 "circuits.
- this circuit 16 includes a input 19 which switches the output to 0 regardless of the state of input 9, which brings hand 2 to 12 o'clock and logic circuit 18 to 0.
- input 19 could switch the output of selection circuit 16 to any reference value chosen other than 0.
- the 16 'and 16 "selection circuits have 19 'and 19 "inputs allowing the hands 3 and 4. So hands 2, 3 and 4 can be returned at 12 o'clock either together or separately.
- Figure 2 shows by way of example and schematically means detection of insufficient power source and means associated with them.
- the circuit of selection 16 is formed by 6 doors AND receiving on their first entries the internal data to display. The second entries of these 6 doors AND are connected to the output of an AND gate 20. When this output is 1, the 6 AND gates 16 are busy and internal data 9 is transmitted on their outputs and thereby to the input of comparator 17 so as to be displayed. On the other hand, when the output of the AND gate 20 is at 0, the outputs of the gates AND 16 are at 0.
- the needle driven by the motor 7 moves until that the state of logic circuit 18 is also at 0, which corresponds to needle positioning at 12 o'clock. This condition is maintained as long as the output of AND gate 20 is 0. If this output returns to 1, the data internal 9 will be transmitted again by the output of AND gates 16 to the input of the comparator 17 and the needle driven by the motor 7 returns to the position of the dial corresponding to the display of this data.
- the output of the AND gate 20 goes to 0 when one or other of its inputs goes to 0. Let's see under what conditions this happens.
- the first entry of this gate 20 is connected to the output of an OR gate 21 whose first input is connected to a voltage comparator 22 connected on the one hand to a reference of internal voltage 23 and on the other hand to a network of resistors 24, 25 and 26 connected to the terminals of the power source.
- a voltage comparator 22 When the tension of the power source is correct the output of the voltage comparator 22 is to 1.
- this voltage drops below a first level, the output of the voltage comparator 22 goes to 0.
- the other two inputs of the door OR 21 are connected to the contacts of buttons 5 and 6. These inputs are normally 0 when these contacts are open, and momentarily pass to 1 when the user presses them.
- one of the needles for example the needle 4
- FIG 3 shows by way of example and schematically the different operating zones of the means in Figure 2.
- our watch is powered by photovoltaic cells at a voltage nominal of 1.6 Volts, and that we have a first level of detection at 1.35 volts and a second detection level at 1.15 volts.
- the consumption of the circuit is 0.2 ⁇ A and that of the motors 0.6 ⁇ Coulomb by step. These motors operate correctly up to 1 volt.
- the total consumption is 0.8 ⁇ A. In classic watch, this consumption is constant and remains even when an insufficiency in the voltage of the power source is noted and that the EOL (end of life) system works.
- the Gold Cap which ensures the power reserve will continue to discharge at the same rate and the watch will stop after a few hours.
- Figure 4 shows by way of example and schematically a circuit allowing to put the means of Figure 2 in conditions of correct start-up when re-establishing the power source.
- the motor 7 the logic circuit 18 whose state is representative of the position on the dial of the needle driven by the motor, and the comparison circuit 17.
- the terminal S corresponding to the output of the AND gate 26 in Figure 2 is connected to a first input of a NOR gate 40 whose output is connected to the reset inputs of circuits 17 and 18.
- terminal S is 1 and output from door 40 to 0.
- terminal S goes at 0.
- the logic outputs representing the state of circuit 18 are connected to a OR gate 41 whose output is connected to the second input of the NOR gate 40.
- circuits 17 and 18 must be reset to 0 on power-up, so that prevent these circuits from returning to any state.
- the output of door 40 is connected by a very low current source 42 and a capacity 43 at the positive pole of food.
- These two elements force the reset inputs of circuits 17 and 18 to 1 when switching on power on and set them to 0 before normal operation of the electronic circuits is not restored. So the logic circuit 18 is put in state 0 corresponding to the 12 o'clock position of the hand and it is not necessary to carry out the reshaping procedure.
- Figure 5 shows by way of example and schematically a safety device allowing the position of the hands to be blocked during a battery change. Indeed we have shown that it is possible to keep the logic circuits 18 in phase with the hands by bringing and blocking these at 12 noon. But what happens if you disconnect the battery while the voltage is still sufficient. The needles will not time to come into the correct position and synchronization will be lost. To avoid this, you can use a safety contact like contact 27 of Figure 2, contact that must be opened before you can disconnect the battery. So we tell the circuit that the source food is likely to disappear quickly, and it is left to time to bring the hands to the 12 o'clock position.
