Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for operating a electrographic printer or copier using a toner particle containing layer, short toner layer, on one Toner receiving surface deposited under the action of a force field becomes. At least part of the deposited toner particles becomes under the action of a second force field on a second Transfer toner receiving surface on which the transferred toner particles form a second layer.
- the second toner receiving surface is through the outer surface the developer roller. Be at the transmission gap the toner particles from the transfer roller to the developer roller transferred where they form the second layer.
- the Second layer toner particles are rotated the developer roller at a development nip between the Developer roller and a toner image carrier passed.
- the Toner image carrier carries a latent charge image, on which Development gap selectively toner particles are applied, creating a toner image.
- the toner image is then removed from the toner image carrier with or without using an intermediate image carrier applied to a final image carrier, e.g. on paper.
- a disadvantage of the known method is that monitoring the development process and especially that of the developer unit dispensed amount of toner is not possible. Is the amount of toner per area on one of the two toner receiving areas or the charge of the toner particles during development below or above a predetermined setpoint or Target area, so the error is only on the finished print image recognized. A response is therefore relatively late. The disturbances in the printed image fall especially in the case of large-area prints Image elements in the printed image.
- Both dry toners and liquid toners are used as toners used.
- Liquid toners are used for. Apply the Toners e.g. mechanical devices with electrical auxiliary potential used. The toners used can still be used divide into single and multi-component toner.
- JP-A-06067527 explains a developer unit in which using a force field between a transfer roller and a developer roller depending on the sensor signal Sensor the actual toner mass per surface section on the developer roller is regulated.
- a developer unit is disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 5,285,243 explained using the rate of development a sensor is detected, the toner mass per unit area detected. Depending on the recorded development rate the charging potential, the exposure, the bias potential or the toner concentration changes.
- JP-A-58121050 becomes a developer unit with a developer roller explained.
- the charge of the toner particles on the developer roller are detected using a sensor.
- the control loop becomes a charge unit depending on the output signal of the sensor controlled so that the toner on the developer roller a given charge or a given Has surface potential.
- the invention is based on the knowledge that parameters, which the quality of the development process and thus also significantly determine the quality of the printed image, already at Develop and not only after the development process has been completed must be recorded in the event of deviations from this To be able to react quickly to the parameters of target values.
- the average actual toner mass per surface section is recorded at at least one point in the first toner layer and / or the second toner layer. For each surface section, this means that a relatively uniform layer is assumed and the toner mass detected is related to a defined surface section of the toner layer, for example 1 cm 2 . The total area of the respective toner layer is also used as a reference. The average toner mass per surface section is also a measure of the thickness of the toner layer in question.
- At least one is in a first control loop the force fields depending on the deviation of the actual toner mass per area section from a predetermined average Target toner mass changed for each surface section. Is the actual toner mass the force field becomes higher than the target toner mass changed so that fewer toner particles on the toner receiving surface be deposited. Is the actual toner mass smaller than the target toner mass, so the force field becomes changed that more toner particles on the toner receiving surface be deposited. Voices actual toner mass per surface section and target toner mass per surface section, so the force field is not changed. Through these measures the actual toner mass exactly to the value of the target toner mass set and kept constant during printing become. If necessary, during printing the target toner mass per surface section can also be changed.
- Which of the two force fields is changed depends on the specific parameters when printing.
- the toner receiving surfaces made of an electrically conductive material the force fields generated due to potential differences, on which both toner receiving surfaces or at least one of the toner receiving surface is involved, so the potential the second toner receiving surface is not chosen arbitrarily when this toner receiving surface on the developer roller is arranged.
- Changing the potential of the second toner receiving area would also affect the tension in the development gap impact. However, it is not always possible or appropriate to change this voltage. In this case only the potential of the first toner receiving surface, i.e. the transfer roller, when regulating changed.
- the invention is also in at least one place the first toner layer and / or the second toner layer average actual toner charge per surface section.
- the charge of the toner particles in question Layer depending on the deviation between the actual toner charge per surface section and a predetermined target toner charge changed for each section of the area.
- the toner charge is per area section as one important characteristic of the development process recorded and on set the value of the specified target toner charge. While of the printing operation, the actual toner charge on the by the target toner charge predetermined value kept constant. The result is an improvement in the development process Print images.
- the toner charge per surface section can be on both toner layers be increased to charge losses during the Compensate for the transport of the toner particles on these layers. If the space in the developer unit is limited, so only the toner charge of the first toner layer or the toner charge of the second toner layer by a single one Changer changed.
- the control procedures e.g. in the manner of a cascade regulation or a ratio regulation combined.
- a regulation is also applied, where the toner mass per surface section and the toner charge are set in relation to each area section, so that the so-called mass-related toner charge as a control variable is calculated.
- the mass-related toner charge deviates from a predetermined value the toner mass per surface section and / or the toner charge per surface section changes.
- the mass-related toner charge is one of the most important parameters of the development process.
- the mass-related toner charge constant throughout the development process kept, there is always an equal amount for development of toner particles available, their charge in a given Area.
- the toner particles are thus stored during the entire development process to develop areas of the toner image carrier. The consequence is a high quality printed image.
- the specification of the target toner mass per surface section and / or the target toner charge per area section the voltage in one Development gap considered. Used by an operator the tension in the development gap e.g. when setting the contrast of the printed image changed, so are Automatically adjust target toner mass and target toner charge, to produce a high quality print image.
- the invention relates to a developer unit for an electrographic printer or copier, which in particular for performing the methods explained above is used.
- a developer unit for an electrographic printer or copier which in particular for performing the methods explained above is used.

- Chamber 34 is through an air supply port 36 constantly fed air.
- corona wires 38 and 40 There are two corona wires in the developer unit 10 38 and 40, which have a voltage of about -8 kV and the toner particles of the mixture 18 charge negatively in their environment.
- the corona wires 38 and 40 run across the entire Developer unit in a length equal to the extent of the photoconductor belt 12 transversely to its transport direction 14 approximately corresponds.
- a transfer roller 42 is arranged above the interface 20, whose axis 44 is parallel to the corona wires 38 and 40 runs.
- a conductive surface layer 46 has approximately a potential of -0.9 kV, so that over the entire length of the Corona wires 38 and 40 the negative toner particles produced due to the effect of the electric field between the Corona wires 38, 40 and the transfer roller 42 on the Surface layer 46 are deposited. With a turn the transfer roller 42 in the direction of an arrow 48 the deposited toner particles toward an opening 50 the developer unit 10 to discharge toner particles.
- the transport path of the charged toner particles runs for the section shown in FIG. 1 through the Developer unit 10 along the outer radius of the transfer roller 42 from point A to point B.
- the toner particles are affected by another electric field on a conductive surface layer 52 transferred to a developer roller 54, which itself rotates in the direction of an arrow 56.
- the further electrical Field lies between the surface layer 46 and the one on Potential of approximately -0.5 kV charged surface layer 52
- the axis 58 of the developer roller 54 is substantially parallel arranged to axis 44.
- the toner particles are cut after transfer in the Point B through developer roller 54 along the outside radius the developer roller 54 to a point C in the opening 50 transported.
- Scattered toner particles that are not from the transfer roller 42 have been transferred to the developer roller 54, with Removed from the surface layer 46 with the aid of a scraper 60, before the respective area of the surface layer 46 is again covered with new charged toner particles.
- the Scraper 60 runs the entire length of the transfer roller 42 and is held by a wiper holder 62.

- the scraper 64 runs over the entire Length of the developer roller 54 and is by another scraper holder 66 held, the same time also guide device for the toner particles detaching from the developer roller 54 is. Those removed by wipers 60 and 64 Toner particles fall back into the mixture 18.
- the developer unit is fed through a toner supply device 68 Toner supplied, which used up during development Toner particles replaced.
- FIG. 2 shows the developer unit 10, but with a latent one Charge image developed on a photoconductor drum 12 ' is, instead of the photoconductor tape 12 (see. Fig. 1) the developer unit 10 is arranged.
- the photoconductor drum 12 rotates in the direction of an arrow 14 '.
- a control device 100 is arranged, a predetermined toner charge is specified via a line 102 which is e.g. to a certain surface section a toner layer 104 on the developer roller 54.
- the control device 50 is also connected via a line 106 a target toner mass for the surface section of the toner layer 104 given.
- the control device 50 receives further over a line 108 signals of an optical Sensor unit 110.
- the optical sensor unit 110 contains a light transmitter, a light receiver and an evaluation unit. The light emitted by the light transmitter is emitted by the Toner layer 104 remitted to the light receiver.
- the Sensor unit 110 uses that dependent on the actual toner mass per surface section Remission behavior of the toner layer 104 is in the Sensor unit 110 the actual toner mass per surface section in the toner layer 104 determines. Via line 108 the current value of the actual toner mass to the control device 100, in which in a subtractor 112 the difference from the target toner mass and actual toner mass is formed, being at the exit of the subtractor 112, a toner mass error signal is present.
- the sensor unit 110 can also have a capacitive one Contain sensor with the help of the actual toner mass per surface section is determined by changing the dielectric Properties of the toner layer 104 when changed the toner mass per area section can be recorded.
- Developer roller 54 is also a potential sensor unit 114 arranged on the output side via a line 116 the control device 100 is connected.
- the potential sensor unit 114 contains an electrode on which a potential influences that is due to the potential of the developer roller 54 and determined by the totality of the toner charge, which are in the field area of the electrode on the surface of the Developer roller 54 is located.
- the potential sensor unit 114 also contains an evaluation unit that is influenced by the Potential determines the actual toner charge.
- subtractor 118 which is in the control device 50 is included, the difference between the target toner charge and Actual toner charge is formed. At the output of subtractor 118 there is a toner charge error signal.
- the two error signals of the subtractors 112 and 118 are fed to a controller 120 which e.g. contains two PI controllers, one of which is on an output line 122 of the control device 100 depending on the toner mass error signal Control voltage USTELL1 generated on a controlled power supply 124 is present.
- the controlled power supply 124 generates on its Output a voltage U3, which is the potential on the corona wires 38 and 40 determined.
- the voltage U3 becomes dependent set by the control voltage USTELL1.
- a first control loop I thus contains the optical sensor unit 110, the control device 100, the power supply 124 and the corona wires 38 and 40.
- Using the control loop I becomes the toner mass per surface section of the toner layer 104 regulated by with too little toner mass per surface section the potential of corona wires 38 and 40 increases so that there are more toner particles on the surface 46 deposit the transfer roller 42. Because these toner particles in the area of a transfer nip 125 from the transfer roller 42 are transferred to the developer roller 54, Ultimately, the toner mass per surface section also increases the toner layer 104.
- the second PI controller contained in controller 120 generates dependent from the toner charge error signal of the subtractor 118 a line 126 a control voltage USTELL2 and on a Line 128 is a control voltage USTELL3, essentially the control voltage USTELL3 is changed when regulating.
- the Control voltage USTELL2 is connected to a controlled power supply unit 130 which depends on the value of the control voltage USTELL2 on Output generates a voltage U1, which is the charge behavior of a scorotron 132.
- the control voltage USTELL3 is present at the input of a controlled power supply 134 its output depends on the value of the control voltage USTELL3 generates a voltage U2 which is applied to a control grid 136 of the Skorotrons 132 is present. About the control grid 136 can better control the charge behavior of the scorotron 132 than about the voltage U1.
- the second PI controller therefore essentially gives the control voltage USTELL3 so that the error signal of the subtractor 118 is reduced in amount and finally the has numerical value "0" until disturbances lead to a new control process to lead.
- a second control loop II thus contains the potential sensor unit 114, the control device 100, the power supply 130 or 134 and the scorotron 132. Sinks the Actual toner charge per surface section on the toner layer 104 from, the voltage U2 is set so that the Charge behavior of the scorotron 132 increased. Exceeds the Actual toner charge per surface section of the toner layer 104 den specified target value, the voltage U2 is changed so that by the scorotron 132 fewer charges on the Toner layer 104 are applied. Through the control loop II succeeds in the actual toner charge per surface section according to predetermined target toner charge per area during the To keep the development process constant.
- the control device 100 is given a mass-related target toner charge instead of the target toner charge per surface section and the target toner mass per surface section.
- the predetermined mass-related target toner charge is compared with a mass-related actual toner charge, which is determined from the actual toner charge and the actual toner mass using the formula given above.
- a predetermined control strategy of the control device 100 ultimately keeps the mass-related toner charge qT on the toner layer 104 constant during the development process.
- FIG. 3 shows the developer unit 10 with a control device 100 'to regulate the mass-related toner charge qT the transfer roller 42 using a corotron 150.
- Die Control device 100 is like control device 100 (see Fig. 2) built, but contains instead of the controller 120 a regulator 120 'that only the two output lines 122 and 126 has. This is due to the fact that the Korotron 150, which is much simpler than the scorotron 132 (see FIG. 2) has no control grille, so that the voltage U2 generated by the power supply 134 is eliminated.
- the optical sensor unit 110 are the potential sensor unit 114 and the corotron 150 now arranged near the transfer roller 42 so that parameters a toner layer 152 on the surface 46 of the transfer roller 48 are detected or influenced.
- the regulation of the toner mass per surface section in the control circuit I takes place as explained above with reference to FIG. 2.
- To regulate the Toner charge per surface section is determined by the control device 100 'only the control voltage USTELL2 is specified.
- the Control voltage USTELL2 is selected so that the actual toner charge per surface section of the toner layer 152 on the given by the target toner charge per surface section Adjusts value.
- control device 100 ′′ which is essentially like the control device 100 (see FIG. 2) is constructed. Instead of of controller 120, however, contains control device 100 ′′ a controller 120 '', which also regulates the current Potential of the developer roller 54 and the transfer roller 42 considered. These potentials arise e.g. from the Contrast value that an operator of the printer has chosen.
- the development process is essentially regulated as explained above with reference to FIG. 2.
- the Control device 100 via a line 170 with a controlled Power supply 172 and a line 174 with a controlled power supply 176 connected.
- a bias signal BIAS1 transmitted on line 170 .
- BIAS1 Depending on the value of the Bias signal BIAS1 generates a voltage U4 in the power supply 122, that to the conductive surface 52 of the developer roller 54 is created.
- the selected value of the potential on the developer roller 24 affects both the control loop I as well as the control circuit II, since it is the value of the target toner charge and the target toner mass.
- bias signal BIAS2 is transmitted on line 174, that determines what voltage U5 at the output of the Power supply 176 is generated.
- the voltage U5 determines the potential on the surface 46 of the transfer roller 42. Also the potential on the transfer roller 42 affects both Control loops I and II.
- the difference between the voltages U5 and U3 determines that on the Transfer roller 42 separated toner mass per surface section and to a certain extent also the toner charge per surface section.
- the difference between the voltages U4 and U5 is determined from the transfer roller 42 to the developer roller 54 transferred toner mass per surface section.
- the difference between the voltage U4 and the potential on the surface the photoconductor drum 12 ' determines that from the developer roller 54 toner mass transferred to the photoconductor drum 12 ' per surface section on areas in which toner particles be deposited during development. Because of the pictorial Charge distribution on the surface of the photoconductor drum 12 'becomes the for each pixel of the latent charge image Coloring with toner particles from the respective potential difference between the voltage U4 and the local photoconductor potential certainly.
