Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a reclosable packet for food products, especially baked products such as rusks and biscuits.
  • the usual way of packaging products of this kind is basically as follows:
  • the rusks to be packed are divided into groups, each group being placed either horizontally, with the rusks side by side on edge, or vertically, with the rusks placed one on top of the other in a stack.
  • a first inner wrap made from relatively stiff paper or card is placed around the group, in contact with the products so as to support them, and a second outer wrap is then placed around the inner wrap.
  • the ends of the outer wrap are suitably folded and glued in such a way as to hold the entire packet together.
  • the two wraps perform the different functions of supporting the products and holding the packet together, which are intentionally kept separate mainly to prevent the adhesive used to hold down the flaps of the outer wrap from coming into direct contact with the food product inside the packet.
  • the inner wrap is made from stiff paper or card to provide support and confer shape on the packet, usually parallelepipedal or cylindrical, while the outer wrap is made from thin flexible material which can be easily glued down to hold the packet together but without allowing the adhesive to come into contact with the product.
  • the packet has an opening made in at least one side of it to provide access to the inside of the packet so that individual products can be taken out.
  • a portion of the packet is used to make a flap which can be moved from a position in which it closes the above mentioned opening to a position in which the opening is left open so that the products inside the packet can be accessed.
  • Means are also provided to keep the flap in the closed position.
  • the closing flap is made on the outer wrap and has an adhesive label or tab on the unattached end of it. This is designed in such a way that it can be pulled free of the packet to open the flap, thus allowing access to the products through the opening, and then pressed down on the surface of the outer wrap again to securely reclose the flap so that the remaining products can be protected and their freshness and aroma held in.
  • the aim of the present invention is to overcome the disadvantages described above.
  • the present invention provides a packet in which the reclosing flap is made from a portion of the inner wrap and the means for keeping the flap in the closed position comprise a first connecting portion forming part of the inner wrap and made on the reclosing flap itself, a second connecting portion on the outer wrap and means which, when the flap is in the closed position, allow the first connecting portion to engage with the second connecting portion on the outer wrap in such a way as to stop the flap from reopening. Therefore, the packet can be properly reclosed by purely mechanical means, without resorting to adhesive labels to stick the flap to the remaining part of the wrap. This has several advantages in terms of effectiveness (it is unaffected by crumbs and the packet can be properly reclosed until all the products are finished) and economy (the technology required to make the packet is simpler and hence costs less).
  • the flap is part of the stiffer inner wrap and not the weaker outer wrap, it is easier to open the packet properly without tearing the outer wrap which holds it together.
  • the preferred embodiment of the packet for food products in particular for rusks 10, comprises a typical parallelepipedal product container 12 having a first inner wrap 14 (shown in particular in Figure 4), made from relatively stiff paper or card, in contact with the products and designed to support them, and a second tubular outer wrap 16, made from a soft, flexible material designed to hold the packet together, placed around the inner wrap 14 and having end faces (only the one labelled 15 being shown in the drawings) obtained by folding and gluing its end flaps.
  • first inner wrap 14 shown in particular in Figure 4
  • second tubular outer wrap 16 made from a soft, flexible material designed to hold the packet together
  • the container 12 has two end faces (only the one labelled 15 being shown in the drawings) and, lengthways, two lateral faces, labelled 17 and 19, an upper face 21 and a lower face 23.
  • an opening 18 designed to provide access to the inside of the container to allow the rusks 10 to be taken out of the packet.
  • a portion 20 of the inner wrap 14 forms a flap that closes the opening 18 and that is designed to be moved from a position in which it closes the above mentioned opening (see Figures 2 and 4) to a position in which the opening is left open (see Figure 3) so that the products inside the packet can be accessed through the opening 18.
  • the flap 20 formed from the inner wrap 14 is covered by a portion 22 of the outer wrap 16 defined by tear lines which enable it to be pulled right off the packet to give free, easy access to the reclosing flap 20.
  • the detachable covering portion 22 is wider than the reclosing flap 20. Therefore, the edge of the outer wrap 16 around the opening 18 does not interfere in any way with the lateral edges of the flap 20 when the latter is opened and, hence, it is very difficult to accidentally tear the outer wrap 16 when the packet is opened.
  • the means for keeping the flap 20 closed are best embodied by a first connecting portion 26 on the flap 20, and a second connecting portion 28 on the outer wrap 16. These two portions are positioned in such a way that when the flap is closed, the first connecting portion 26 tucks into the second connecting portion on the outer wrap 26 and thus keeps the flap 20 closed.
  • Figure 4 in particular shows that, to keep the flap closed, a part of the outside surface of the connecting portion 26 on the flap engages with the inside surface of the connecting portion 28 on the outer wrap 16.
  • the flap 20 is connected to the remaining part of the inner flap 14 in hinge-like fashion, and the connecting portion 26 on the flap 20, which is essentially a square-shaped tab, extends from the end opposite to that where the flap is connected with the remaining part of the inner wrap 14.
  • connecting portion 26 when the connecting portion 26 is in the closed condition, it is substantially at right angles to the main body of the flap and extends downwards from the latter, in such a way that it is substantially parallel to the connecting portion 28 on the outer wrap and positioned lower than the upper edge of the connecting portion 28, so as to create a partial overlapping or interference between the mutual contacting portions 26 and 28 in the flap opening direction. This causes the flap 20 to be held in the closed condition.
  • Figure 5 shows a preferred embodiment where, to enable the packet to be opened, the first connecting portion 26 is elastically connected to the body of the flap 20 in such a way as to give elastically in an angular direction when the flap is pulled by the user's fingers 32, moving the first connecting portion 26 towards and against the opposing connecting portion 28 of the outer wrap so as to allow the two portions to come apart when the flap is moved to the open position, drawn in a dashed line in Figure 5.
  • the use of the inner wrap 14 to make the reclosing flap - the inner wrap 14 being made of card, that is, a composite paper material with several plies in which flexural stiffening ribs are made in a given direction - enables the connecting portion 26 to be relatively stiff so that it can be kept elastically in the contact or closed condition, even if there is no product pressing against the inside of the wrap at the opening 18.
  • the folds between the connecting portion 26 and the remaining part of the flap 20, and between the flap and the fixed part of the inner wrap 14 provide hinge-like connections which are sufficiently elastic to suit the purposes of the present invention.
  • the flap 20 can be moved down and at the same time the front edge of the main body 20' pressed gently so that the flap 20 makes a slight hump and the connecting tongue 26 can be tucked in between the product and the fixed conecting portion 28. Otherwise, especially if the packet is almost empty and there is no product occupying the area at the opening 18, the packet can also be closed by moving the flap down while at the same time gently pushing the connecting tongue 26 itself so as to tuck it in on the inner side the outer wrap 16.
  • a tab 34 projecting from the reclosing flap 20 and forming an extension of the main body of the reclosing flap 20, this tab being designed to be flipped or pulled upwards so as to move the reclosing flap 20 to the open position.
  • the tab 34 extends in a direction that is substantially parallel to, and in the same plane as, the main body 20' of the reclosing flap 20, projecting at right angles from the side 17 of the packet enough to provide an underside 35 which can be engaged by the user's finger 32 in order to allow the reclosing flap 20 to be flipped or pulled open as shown in Figure 5.
  • the lift tab 34 is located longitudinally half way along the front edge of the flap 20 and is connected to the latter at a precreased line or fold line 36 made on the inner wrap 14.
  • the lift tab 34 is obtained, after the covering portion 22 of the outer wrap has been removed, by tearing along a ready-made tear line 38 (shown in Figure 2) which gives the lift tab 34 an arc-shaped front edge 39.
  • the protecting covering portion 22 of the outer wrap 16 has end sections 21' and 22" which cover parts of the lateral surfaces of the packet and which, when removed, leave a space 41 around the front end of the flap 20 designed to make it easier to pull up the lift tab 34 along the tear line and another space at the opposite end to allow the flap 20 to be easily turned without damaging the rest of the outer wrap.
  • the hinge-like connections between the connecting portion 26 and the flap 20 and between the flap 20 and the inner wrap 14 are preferably created by folding the card blank which forms the inner wrap 14, along precreased lines or fold lines 40 and 42, respectively (shown in Figure 2) so as to make the inner wrap in the shape of a parallelepided.
  • the reclosing flap 20 is attached to the card blank by tear lines, labelled 44 in Figure 2, at right angles to the adjacent long edges of the blank and may, by way of example, consist of lines of slits or perforations. Once the protecting covering portion 22 has been removed, the reclosing flap 20 can be easily and neatly torn along the lines 44 to open the packet.
  • the reclosing flap extends crossways along a part of the surface in which it is made, in a substantially central position relative to the long side of the packet. In another embodiment of the invention, the reclosing flap might extend crossways along the entire length of the packet.
  • the invention might also be embodied by packets of a shape other than the parallelepiped described up to now.
  • the packet could be cylindrical or tubular in shape.
  • the opening providing access to the inside of the packet and the related closing parts instead of being located in a central position on the long side of the packet, might be made in other positions, for example, even on the end faces of the packet.
  • the blanks used have tear lines consisting of holes or slits previously made in them by punching or by any other suitable method, and precreased lines made by folding, so that excessive waste and offcuts are not produced during the packaging process.
  • the inner and outer wraps may be made from materials other than those mentioned up to now, provided that such materials are suitable to achieve the aims of the invention.
