Abstract
Description
An impregnated cathode includes a porous emissive pellet made of refractory materials (Tungsten, Molybdenum, Rhenium ...) impregnated with emissive materials (Barium, strontium, calcium, aluminum, cesium ...). This pellet is placed on a support generally in the form of a refractory metal cup (Tantalum, molybdenum, etc.); the assembly forms the upper part of the cathode.
The emissive patch and its support are assembled so as to form an assembly mechanically capable of withstanding the various stages of manufacture of the cathodes and the high operating temperatures of said cathode; moreover, the contact between the wafer and its support must be as perfect as possible in order to guarantee the performance of the cathode.
The state of the art teaches different methods usually used to produce the upper part of an impregnated cathode:
- the first consists of depositing a paint on the rear face of the emissive patch in order to be able to make a weld with the support. The paint is generally based on Molybdenum and Rhenium powders. The major drawbacks are the high price of this paint, difficult storage of this paint due to strong evaporation and sedimentation, a quantity deposited on the support that is difficult to control and reproducible, which gives rise to a variable thickness of this interface, an impossibility of deposition for cathodes of reduced dimensions (less than 2 mm), compulsory identification of the face of the patch covered with paint to perform the welding.
- the second, as indicated in patent US5218263, consists in mechanically blocking the emissive patch of the cathode on the support by a hat or a piece partially covering it. The cap has an opening to allow the emission of the pellet in the tube. This cap is welded with the support and therefore integral with the upper part of the cathode. The major drawbacks are:
- an increase in the weight of the cathode to achieve this structure and this at the expense of the ignition time of the cathode
- inefficient thermal conduction of the wafer with the rest of the cathode to the detriment of the overall performance of the cathode
- a risk of assembly at the bottom or with a degree of freedom of the tablet in its housing
- the presence of a metal part between the gun electrode located opposite the cathode and the surface of the pellet, a part which modifies the conformation of the applied electric fields
- a subsequent deposition of material lowering the output work of the cathode on the surface of the pellet made difficult by the presence of the cap
- the third, disclosed in US Pat. No. 5,171,180, consists in directly assembling the pellets in their support without welding, then treating these sets of parts in a hydrogen oven at high temperature to chemically react the emissive products contained in the tablet with the support in order to carry out a hanging.
The major drawbacks are:- loss of the emissive materials contained in the pellet in order to be able to bond with the support, which reduces the service life of the cathode,
- treatment in a small batch hydrogen furnace due to the need to have only one stack of parts,
- the correct positioning of the tablet not guaranteed during handling in the oven or by the movements generated by the tablet in its housing during the chemical reaction,
- non-guaranteed positioning stability of the pellet during use due to delamination of the products generated, in principle alone creating mechanical strength.
- the fourth, disclosed by patent US5128584, consists in directly welding the cathode patch with its support with a pretreatment making the two adjoining surfaces rough. The welding is carried out by electrical resistance and is made possible thanks to the good contact made between the two elements. The major drawbacks are the power required for welding the refractory material which generates a high temperature rise modifying or partially destroying the emissive products contained in the wafer, the brittleness of the weld because it remains weak and brittle during assembly of the cathodes in the electron gun, the obligation to locate the face of the patch made rough to perform the welding, the difficulty of locating the face of a small patch (less than 2 mm).
The object of the present invention is a method of manufacturing an impregnated cathode and more particularly a method of assembling the emissive patch to its support which does not have the drawbacks of the prior art, which is simple to to implement, economical, the effects of which are neutral with respect to the emissivity of the tablet while guaranteeing a reliable and repetitive positioning of the tablet in its support. For this, the method of manufacturing an impregnated cathode according to the invention comprises a step of welding a porous emissive pellet of refractory materials inside a support of refractory metal characterized in that to facilitate the welding a purely metallic filler material is disposed between the pellet and its support. In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the filler material is a thin metal plate inserted between the pellet and its support.
The invention will be better understood with the aid of the description below and the appended drawings, among which:- Figure 1 shows a sectional view of a cathode impregnated according to the state of the art
- FIG. 2 illustrates a representation of a cathode according to the invention showing an exploded view of the upper part of said cathode
- Figures 3 and 4 illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention respectively in top view and in section.
As indicated in FIG. 1, an impregnated cathode generally comprises a

The parameters of emission stability, lifetime, ignition time and emission threshold stability essentially depend on the mechanical strength of the pellet with the rest of the structure of the cathode.
However, since the emissive patch and its support are made of refractory materials, it is extremely difficult to make the direct connection of the two elements by welding; the numerous solutions disclosed in the state of the art also do not offer a simple, reliable, inexpensive solution with repeatability characteristics necessary for the industrialization of a key element for a cathode ray tube.

As indicated in FIG. 2, and more particularly in FIG. 4 showing a section of the upper part of the cathode, the invention proposes to insert between the
The filler material, interfaced between the pellet and its support can be in the form of metal powder, flat ribbon, wire.
