Apparatus for taking physical exercise, particularly exercise similar to that taken in rowing, comprising a frame structure (2) equipped with a longitudinal central beam (3), which can be placed substantially horizontally and on which a seat (7) may be slideably mounted, while means (8) on which the user's feet can rest are attached to the beam towards its front end, an articulated lever (10a, 10b) being provided on at least one side of the beam, while a resistive means (13) connects this lever to the frame structure in order to brake the displacement of the lever operated by the user, the beam being equipped towards its front end with a support (36) substantially orthogonal to the beam and pointing upwards when the beam is lying substantially horizontally, it being possible for the said beam (3) to be placed in a raised-up position in order to allow the user to take physical exercise of a different sort, characterized in that, on the one hand, a stand (17) is articulated under the beam (3), locking means (B) being provided to immobilize the stand (17) relative to the beam (3) in such a way that it is possible to obtain a first configuration with the beam (3) substantially horizontal, the stand (17) then forming a very obtuse V with the beam and resting on the ground towards the rear end of the beam (3), and a second configuration in which the beam (3) is raised up, but still inclined with respect to the vertical, the stand (17) then forming a more acute V with the beam so that it rests on the ground on the same side as the front end of the beam (3) and, on the other hand, the seat (7) includes, on the underneath, a means (37) for fixing to the aforementioned support (36) so that when the beam is in the raised-up position the seat (7) can be fixed to this support, with its mid-plane substantially orthogonal to the beam.
  2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, characterized in that the stand (17) is telescopic and includes at least two elements (21, 22) which are capable of sliding one with respect to the other, with means (23) for stopping these two elements in a position corresponding to a desired length.
  3. Apparatus according to Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the beam (3) is hollow and in that one telescopic element (30) can slide in this beam (3), stop means (33) being provided between the element (30) and the beam (3) in order to immobilize the one with respect to the other in a given position.
  4. Apparatus according to Claim 3, characterized in that the element (30) capable of sliding inside the beam (3) has a cross section which is substantially smaller than that of the beam, while a sleeve tube (31) in which the said element (30) slides with a small amount of play is fixed to the front end of the beam (3).
  5. Apparatus according to Claim 4, characterized in that the support (36) is fixed to the sleeve tube (31) provided at the end of the beam (3).
  6. Apparatus according to Claims 2 and 3, characterized in that the stop means (23, 33) of the inner and outer telescopic elements of the stand (17) and of the beam (3) comprise a series of holes (24, 34) in the inner element and a pin (26, 35) engaged in two opposing holes of the outer element (21, 31), locking being obtained by inserting the pin both into the holes in the outer element and into one set of holes in the inner element.
  7. Apparatus according to Claim 3, characterized in that the stand (17) as well as the element (30) which can slide in the beam (3) are equipped, at their end intended to bear on the ground, with a foot (28, 32) consisting of a transverse tubular element.
  8. Apparatus according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that its configuration, when the beam (3) is in the raised-up position, is such that the vertical line (G) passing through the centre of the seat (7) fixed to the support (36) and corresponding substantially to the application of the weight of the user seated on this seat (7) intersects with the ground between the bearing feet (28, 32) of the apparatus.
  9. Apparatus according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that two cross pieces (4a, 4b, 5a, 5b) are fixed on each side of the beam (3), these cross members being spaced apart in the longitudinal direction and connected by a longitudinal member (6a, 6b) at their outer ends, an articulated lever (10a, 10b) being provided on each side of the beam with an associated resistive means (13), each lever (10a, 10b) being articulated to the outer face of the associated longitudinal member (6a, 6b).
