Description
PHYSICAL EXERCISING APPARATUS
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to physical exercising apparatus and more particularly, but not exclusively, to exercising apparatus intended for use in the home to provide a balanced range of exercises.
There are two main exercise requirements and thus, to provide a balanced range of exercises, the apparatus should be capable of being used to provide both kinds of exercise.
The first of these is a simple whole body exercise which is intended for easy repetition over an extended period with the object of raising breathing and pulse rates. Such an exercise is now known as an "aerobic" exercise and one form of apparatus developed for the carrying out of aerobic exercises is the rowing machine.
The second exercise requirement is the provision of "anaerobic" exercises in which the various muscle groups are strengthened by the overload principle. A muscle is strengthened by being worked harder than it is accustomed to and is then allowed to rest. As it rests, it resets itself at a slightly higher level of performance, thus enabling a progressively more difficult work load to be carried out.
The apparatus normally used for anaerobic exercise includes a bench which is arranged at around "knee height" so that a user can lay on the bench and exercise with his legs straddling the bench and with his feet on the ground to stabilise his body. An exercise bench may be used with weights, bar bells and dumb bells and may be attached to an upright frame component.
Description of the Prior Art
One form of rowing machine is shown in European patent application Number 84 308057.3, this machine includes a horizontal frame on which a detachable power pack can be mounted, the power pack including a pivoted lever which is movable against the action of a resistance incorporated in the power pack.
Apparatus for use in carrying out anaerobic exercises are shown in, for example, US patent specifications Numbers 3 614 097, and 4 369 966.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention provides exercising apparatus comprising a frame having ground-engaging support means, the frame providing a track along which a seat is slidable, footrests mounted on the frame, a movable lever having means whereby it can be so mounted on the frame that a user seated on the seat can move the lever against the action of resistance means to perform a rowing exercise, an upright, means for releasable connection of one end of the frame to the upright and a leg structure at the other end of the frame whereby the frame can be supported horizontally at approximately knee height.
The movable lever and resistance means, preferably together, form a power pack, as described in European patent application number 84 308057.3, which is selectively attachable either to the frame or to the upright.
The leg structure at the other end of the frame is preferably pivotally mounted on the frame and movable between an inoperative position in which it is substantially flush with the frame so that the frame can rest directly on the ground whilst a rowing exercise is being carried out, and an operative position in which it serves to support said other end of the frame at approx mately knee height.
A board is preferably provided which is releasably attachable to the upper surface of the frame (when the lever and resistance means are not mounted on the frame) so that a user can sit or lay on the board to carry out, for example, bench and shoulder press exercises.
Brief Description of the Drawings
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the exercising apparatus for use as a rowing machine,
Figure 2 is a side view of the apparatus as shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a side view showing the apparatus for use in carrying out bench exercises, and
Figure 4 is ano underneath plan view of a board forming part of the apparatus shown in Figure 3.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The apparatus is shown in Figures 1 and 2 for use as a rowing machine 1 and is shown in Figure 3 in its alternative condition when it is used for carrying out bench exercises.
The rowing machine 1 includes a frame which consists of two rectangular section parallel frame members 3, the frame members 3 being of box section and being connected intermediate their ends to provide a rigid structure. Ground-engaging support members 3A and 3B are provided at the ends of the frame 2 and extend at right angles to the frame members 3. The support members 3A and 3B carry rubber or like friction pads so that the frame 2 is positively supported in a horizontal condition at its four corners. A pair of footrests 4 are mounted on support member 3A and have inclined support surfaces so that a user of the apparatus can sit on a seat 9 and rest his feet comfortably on the footrests 4.
The seat 9 is mounted on a carriage 10 which has rollers which run along a track afforded by the upper surfaces of the frame members 3, the rollers being carried between plates which form part of the carriage and which extend on either side of the frame members 3 so that the seat 9 is positively guided during sliding movement thereof along the track provided by the frame 2.
The user of the. apparatus, when sitting on the seat 9, can grasp handles 7 provided on a pivotable lever 6 which forms part of a power pack 5 which is releasably mounted on the frame 2 in the manner described in European patent application number 84 308057.3 to which reference should be made. The lever 6 is pivotable relative to the frame 2 against a resistance provided by a hydraulic piston and cylinder mechanism 8, the piston rod of.this piston and cylinder mechanism 8 being attached to the lever 6 by means of an adjustable clamping mechanism 18 so that the position at which the clamp 18 is attached to the lever 6 can be varied to adjust the resistance afforded against pivotal movement of the lever 6.When, therefore, a rowing exercise is being carried out, the severity of the exercise can be adjusted by the user of the apparatus by adjusting the position of the clamp 18.
A pivotally mounted leg structure 11 is mounted on the frame 2 at the end thereof remote from the footrests, the leg structure 11 being connected to pivot plates 12 mounted one at each end of the transverse frame member 3B. The leg structure 11 comprises a pair of parallel legs interconnected by a ground-engaging base 13, the legs being connected to the pivot plate 12 by pivot pins 14.
When the apparatus is used as a rowing machine 1 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the leg structure 11 is in its inoperative position in which it is substantially flush with the frame members 3 and the base 13 of the leg structure rests against the underside of the frame members 3. The rowing machine 1 is thus used in the same way as a standard rowing machine.
A second part of the apparatus comprises an upright 17 which, as shown in Figure 3, is a wall-mounted structural member whereas, in an alternative embodiment (not illustrated) the upright can be a free-standing support member which extends vertically.
As exlained in European patent application number 84 308057.3 the power pack 5 is detachable from the frame 2 and Figure 3 accordingly shows the power pack 5 connected to the upright 17. A pair of brackets 16 are mounted on the frame members 3 at the ends thereof at which the footrests 4 are located and the brackets 16 are formed with apertures through which locking pins can be passed for connection of the frame 2 to the lower end of the upright 17 so that the frame 2 is supported at a position corresponding to knee-height of the user of the apparatus.
The leg structure 11 is then moved into its operative position as shown in Figure 3 and a locking pin 15 is passed through an aperture in each leg and through an aperture in each pivot plate 12 to lock the leg structure 11 in the position shown in
Figure 3. The frame 2 is disposed horizontally and is firmly
supported at knee height. Before or after connecting the frame
2 to the upright 17, the seat 9 is removed from the track
provided by the frame members 3 and the removable power
pack 5 is also detached from the frame 2. In their place, a padded board 19 is placed on the frame 2. The padded board 19 carries a pair of guides 20, 21 at each of its ends and these rest on the horizontal frame members 3. The board
19 is locked in position on the frame 2 by means of a locking
pin 22.In the condition shown in Figure 3, the board 19
resting on the frame 2 provides a bench on which bench exercises
can be carried out, for example, press up exercises can be
performed by pushing upwards on the handles 7 of the lever 6.
Although Figure 3 shows an arrangement in which the power
pack 5 is connected to the upright 17, and the upright 17
is connected in turn to a wall, it is to be appreciated that
the bench arrangement afforded by the frame 2 and the padded
board 19 can be used in other ways; it is merely necessary
that the leg structure 11 should be moved into its operative
position and that the frame 2 should be connected at its other end to the upright.
By providing a common structure for the carrying out of both
aerobic and anaerobic exercises, the present invention provides an important extension of the facilities which can be provided
by relatively simple equipment.
Although the rowing machine shown in Figures 1 and 2 is a single arm rowing machine, it will be appreciated that the inven tion is equally applicable to twin-arm rowing machines.
