Bei Regen oder einer Befeuchtung des Bodenbelags auf dessen Oberseite anfallendes Wasser tritt durch die Öffnungen der Trägerbahn hindurch in die offenzellige Schaumkunststoffschicht ein und gelangt von dieser aufgrund der Schwerkraft und/oder einer Kapillarwirkung in die Speicherschicht, welche das Wasser aufsaugt, bis ihr Speichervolumen erschöpft ist: nicht mehr speicherbares und an der Belagsoberfläche anfallendes Wasser tritt durch die Speicherschicht hindurch nach unten aus dem Bodenbelag aus und wird in den Unterbau abgeleitet oder fließt auf der Oberfläche eines wasserundurchlässigen Unterbaus seitlich ab. Nach Ende des Regens bzw. der Beregnung des Bodenbelags trocknet dessen Oberfläche z. B. durch Sonne und Wind relativ schnell ab, beim Bespielen des erfindungsgemaßen Bodenbelags wird jedoch durch Druck auf die Belagsoberfläche (z. B. durch den Fuß eines Spielers) der offenzellige Schaumkunststoff zusammengedrückt und dadurch die Belagsoberfläche wieder etwas angefeuchtet, so daß sich der erwünschte Gleiteffekt durch einen Wasserfilm wieder einstellt (Pump- and Play-System).
