Description

The invention relates to a process for the production of book blocks from a stack of printed sheets strung together on the flat side, which are stitched by a binding thread and the folds of which form the booklock spine, the at least two spaced, through which the folds of the printed sheets penetrate from the outside and along the inside fold edge to the exit point extending double-stranded binding thread formed transverse seams, one of which is formed by a chain successively pulled out of the folds of the printed sheets, loop-like sections of the binding thread and interrupted after a stack section determining the book block.

EP-A-0295 220 discloses a method of the type described at the outset and a device for carrying it out, according to which the separation of book blocks from a stack is known the binding thread is cut in two on the so-called flat seam under the action of a tension force generated by the moving stack of printing sheets and is pulled out of the fold at the adjacent loop seam or linked seam and then cut open by a knife. As a result of this procedure, breathing or relaxation occurs between the printed sheets on the stack, which has a negative effect on the stability of the book blocks and the compactness to be produced by the stapling.
Changing the binding thread from the hook needles to the knife creates an additional element of uncertainty regarding the transfer.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a method of the type mentioned at the outset with which the production of booklocks stitched with a binding thread can be carried out more reliably and the device used can be designed in a simple manner.

According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the loop-like section of the binding thread formed for a book block is attached or anchored indissolubly to the back of a book block formed by the folds of the printed sheets or to the linked transverse seam. This will make it possible for the book blocks to be processed without being damaged after stapling.
In this way, for example, an additional empty stitch or an adhesive connection to the last printed sheet of a book block can be avoided.

The last loop-like section of the binding thread can advantageously be shrunk by means of heat supply for form-fitting anchoring or shrink-wise connected to the existing transverse seam, so that breathing of the book block or a partial loosening of the stitch is prevented.

An alternative type of attachment or anchoring is that the last loop-like section of the binding thread is attached to the back of the book block with the addition of a flowable and hardening material or by welding.

The last loop-like section of the binding thread can expediently be cast with the back of the book block while supplying a pourable mass.

In an embodiment that has proven to be favorable, the binding thread is anchored in a form-fitting manner on the back of the book block by deformation of the last loop-like section.

As a device for carrying out the method according to the invention, i.a. Drive devices for the supplied printed sheets and the advance of the stack formed therefrom as well as for at least two needles (pairs of needles) for tacking the binding thread are provided, of which the needle designed as a hook needle and assigned to the linked transverse seam is in the position of the binding thread immersed in the printed sheet by the fold is transferred by a thread carrier oscillating within the printing sheet from the other needle passing through the fold and guiding the binding thread, and for a separating device for cutting the binding thread in two, in that the hook needle is assigned a control device which prevents the rotary movement to form a loop-like section of the binding thread which is exposed at the end of the book block .

The method according to the invention is described below using a described in the drawing embodiment described. The
only figure
shows a stack of printed sheets consisting of two stapled book blocks.

The illustrated stack 1 has been subjected to a stapling process in the direction of arrow A and the printing sheets 2 required for this have been / are fed from below to the rear of the moving stack 1. According to the illustration, there is a stapled book block consisting of three printed sheets 2 and a book block which is located immediately before the stapling process has ended.

According to the drawn manufacturing detail, a first printed sheet 2 intended for the subsequent book block 4 was again applied to the stapled book block 3.
This printed sheet was initially prepared from below by means of the pre-processing needles penetrating the fold from the inside to the outside for the passage of the binding thread 5 which is drawn into the needle 6 arranged above it. With the return stroke of the pre-engineering needles (not visible), the needle 6, which feeds the binding thread 5, and the hook needle 7, each of which together form a pair of needles for producing two transverse seams 8 and 9, through the pre-pierced openings of the fold 10 of the processing printed sheet 2 encountered. A loop is formed on the double-stranded binding thread 5 dipped below the fold inner edge, for example by a short return stroke of the needle 6, so that a so-called thread gripper (not shown) grips the binding thread 5 on the loop formed and on the opposite side assigned to the transverse seam 9 can transport. Here, the binding thread 5 is expected from the immersed hook needle 7 and taken over by a tilting movement of the thread gripper on the hook 11. Subsequently the needles 6 and 7 move back into the starting position above the sheet 2 that has just been processed and the thread gripper is moved into the starting position. This forms a loop on the hook needle 7 above the printed sheet 2. a loop-like section 12 on the binding thread 5, which is partially tensioned by a restoring force and runs along the inside edge of the fold.
The hook needle 7 is then rotated by 180 °, so that the hook 11 is directed against the direction of travel of the stack 1. This rotation of the hook needle 7 serves to chain the loop-like section 12, in that it is not intended to move away from the hook needle 7, but rather continues to surround the latter when lowering for the next printed sheet 2, the tensioning force acting on the binding thread 5 corresponding to the loop-like section 12 Distance to the next sheet 2 reduced. On the way to the position within the following printed sheet 2, the hook needle 7 rotates again into the position in which the hook 11 is aligned in the direction of travel A of the stack 1.
For the present case, where four sheets 2 a book block 3, respectively. 4, this process is repeated twice after the first printed sheet and changed in the fourth or last printed sheet 2 for a book block in such a way that the hook needle 7 does not twist after the formation of the loop-like section 12, so that the latter changes when the hook needle 7 is lowered for the first printed sheet of the next book block from the hook 11 or from the hook needle 7. The thread tension is now released for the time being and in the present case the cutting device 13 is inserted or laterally displaced, such that the binding thread 5 wraps around a cutting blade 14 on the cutting device 13 when the needle 6 is lifted. So that the cutting process can be carried out without problems, the use of a scissor-like cutting device 13 is recommended, through which a Tightening of the stretched binding thread 5 on the loop-like section can be avoided.
The binding thread 5 lying above the lower scissor blade is cut in the course of the further stapling, namely when it is positioned between two scissor blades by the printing sheets 2 or book blocks 3, 4 which are continuously shifting in the direction of arrow A. Up to this moment the binding thread moves above the scissor blade with the printed sheet 2 assigned to it.
In the alternative, the area of the binding thread 5 to be cut could be clamped on the closest stitch plate 15, 16 to avoid tensions. The latter serves as a hold-down device for the printed sheets 2 and to protect the binding thread 5 from being torn out of the printed sheets 2 during stitching.
