- the section of railway rails is generally a function of rail traffic. Consequently and to ensure the continuity of the track, a transition sector is required to ensure the connection between rails of different sections.
- One of these means consists in aligning, end to end, two rails of different sections and making the connection between these rails using joint bars.
- These fishplates consist of machined or forged bars, adapted to the profile of each of the two rails and which are bolted to each of these, laterally between the head and the foot of the rail so that the rolling edges of each of the two rails are in mutual alignment.

- this rim 16a is maximum on one side (fig.2) and minimal or even absent on the other (fig.1) with a progressive evolution from one side to the other.
- the forging operation described above is not carried out at the end of the rail, it is possible to have it followed by one or more complementary forging operations, this time using another set of dies whose buffers have, on the entire length, a uniform section complementary to that of the rail of small section.
