Abstract

A sliding-contact piece for high current densities is described with an admixture which does not require significant additions of lead or antimony. These toxic metals are avoided. Without loss of quality they are replaced by nontoxic metals or metal alloys.

Description

The invention relates to a sliding contact piece based on copper-carbon for high current densities with an admixture of a metal or a metal alloy, the melting temperature of which is significantly lower than that of the copper.

Such sliding contact pieces are in particular carbon brushes, e.g. for starters, as well as grinding pieces, e.g. for pantographs.

Usual sliding contact pieces contain additives of lead or antimony. The purpose of the additives is a good cleaning effect, cooling of the contact piece during operation and also good sliding properties on the counter contact piece. However, these known additives are toxic or harmful to the environment.

In contrast, the invention is therefore based on the object of proposing a sliding contact piece which does not require any significant additions of lead or antimony, without the operating properties of the sliding contact piece suffering as a result.

To achieve this object, the invention is characterized in that the admixture is separated from copper and contains no significant proportion of lead or antimony.

Environmentally harmless admixtures are used, preferably tin or zinc. However, these additives cannot simply be added to the basic components (copper, graphite) because this would result in an alloy that would be much too hard for the desired purpose and which would not have a sufficiently low melting point. Instead, the method according to the invention is to separate the admixture of copper in such a way that it cannot form an alloy with the copper. It is thus present in the sliding contact piece as such and fulfills its task there, the sliding contact piece practically containing no more lead or antimony.

There are several options for separating the admixture from the basic component (copper-carbon). A first possibility is characterized in that the admixture is coated in such a way that it does not form any alloy with the copper. The primary consideration here is to coat the admixture before it is introduced into the mold for producing the sliding contact piece.

Another possibility is characterized in that the admixture is introduced into a binder in such a way that it does not form any alloy with the copper. Here, the separation takes place during the manufacturing process of the sliding contact piece. The binder can also be carbon (graphite), possibly with other binder additives. It is also important here that the admixture is covered by the binder.

A third possibility is that the sliding contact piece consists of several layers which are arranged next to one another in such a way that they touch a counter contact (current collector, collector) and which contain the copper or the admixture separately from one another. The individual layers are pressed or glued together and thereby form the sliding contact piece. If, within the scope of this invention, one speaks of an admixture, this also includes a sliding contact piece with discrete layers which are arranged next to one another and which are connected to one another to form the sliding contact piece and which each contain the copper or the admixture separately from one another.

The proportions by weight of admixtures mentioned in claim 6 are common.

Anspruch 7 gibt bevorzugte Bindemittel bzw. Beschichtungsmittel an. Claim 7 indicates preferred binders or coating agents. It should be mentioned that they become electrically conductive by coking during the manufacturing process.

Anspruch 8 gibt abermals bevorzugte Binde- bzw. Beschichtungsmittel an.Claim 8 again specifies preferred binding agents or coating agents.

The melting temperature of the selected admixture is significantly lower than that of copper and the oxide of the admixture is not harder than approx. 7, measured on the Mohs hardness scale.
