Abstract

The appts. to coat a moving paper or cardboard web has a roller spreader as the first coating stage, fitted with fine peripheral grooves packed closely together to give a low volume layer as a dose as the mantle surface of the first roller (1) guiding the web. The applied mass is compressed in the gap between the first roller (1) and a counter roller (2) so that a thin layer of the coating mass remains, particularly the solid pigment portion. The solid content of the coating mass for the first applied coating is a max. of 70%. The pref. solid content of the coating mass in the first stage is 50-60%, and the coating is applied at a rate of 6-40 ml/m2, especially 12-22 ml/m2. A further roller blade, with peripheral grooves, applies a second coating where the web passes round a second guide roller (3) using a coating mass with a solid content of max. 70% and at least an absolute 10% higher than in the first coating mass as a pref. 60-70%. Designed for coating cardboard web, a doctor blade can be used instead of a roller applicator, or a suitable bar.

Description

The invention relates to a coating method according to the preamble of claim 1 and corresponding application devices.

A method for coating running material webs with two successive coating processes, the layer applied first being still moist when the second layer is applied, is known from US Pat. No. 3,202,536. The two coating stations are arranged here on a single roller guiding the web as well as on two successive rollers. A so-called air brush is used as the final smoothing element. A corresponding application device with a roller guiding the web on a coating device is also known from CA-PS 882 640. In this case the layer is applied by an application roller and scraped off by a doctor blade. It is envisaged that a mixture for the coating mass of kaolin-containing mass as well as mass consisting of starch, protein or thermoplastic synthetic resin is used.

In the unpublished EP-A 352582 a coating device is described in which two layers are applied successively wet-on-wet, the first layer being pressed into the web in a press nip formed between two press rolls, so that impregnation is achieved. The liquid content should only correspond to the absorption capacity (suction capacity) of the web. This device is mainly intended for paper and not for cardboard.

In the case of US-A-3,202,536 it is provided that the first application layer has a relatively high consistency, i.e. with a solids content of more than 55% and the second layer has a much lower consistency with a lower solids content of at most 45%, the main proportion being kaolin.

It is crucial, however, that the first layer is applied very thickly, so that it can first be smoothed using a doctor blade.

However, the use of an air brush is very problematic today because of the high web speeds when applying it. In practice, the air brush can only operate at speeds of up to 500 m / min. to be used. With today's competitive pressure, this is a very serious disadvantage, although the air brush has the great advantage that it can be used to achieve a perfect stroke despite the relatively economical application.

The object of the invention is to provide a device and a method with which a perfect coat application can also be achieved even at high solids contents, which are common today also in mass products. This applies in particular to the use in cardboard, where the roughness of the surface of the raw cardboard is relatively large, so that with other coating processes, e.g. use a doctor blade as a leveling element, uncovered areas can appear on the protruding "mountains".

According to the invention, in the first layer application, by means of the pressure in the press nip formed between the two interacting rollers, the application mass is imprinted on the web from the surface of the first web guide roller, and there is certainly a brief deformation of the paper web. The amount applied or transferred is relatively small, in such a way that solid particles of the coating slip remain on the "mountains" of micro-roughness. The pressing pressure and the hydraulic pressure in the press nip result in a certain dewatering of the coating slip of the first layer, but a moisture content of the coating slip remains. The "pre-dewatering" in the press nip ensures that the coating compound adheres to the "mountains" of the web everywhere. A certain intermediate drying before the second layer application is possible.

For the coating of cardboard, it has proven to be advantageous if the second application layer is only metered by means of the grooves of a roller doctor provided with circumferential grooves, without acting on the layer with a further smoothing element. With a corresponding adjustment of the consistency of the coating slip, a bleeding is achieved to a sufficient extent so that further smoothing, combined with possible disadvantages of scraping, is unnecessary.

The invention is explained below on the basis of the exemplary embodiments illustrated in the figures of the drawing, each of which in principle represents the application method.

In Figure 1 it is provided that the web is passed through a press nip formed between two rollers 1 and 2. In this case, the one roller, which is provided with a rubberized surface, is assigned an application unit which has a nozzle chamber 6 and, at its outlet end, a roller doctor blade 7 provided with circumferential grooves and a holder 8 for the same. The hardness of the rubber coating of the roller 1 can be between 0 and 200, preferably 10 and 70 P and J. The application quantity for the case of cardboard is 6 to 40 ml / m², preferably 12 to 22 ml / m². The second layer is applied in a comparable arrangement with a doctor blade 11 and its holder 12 and nozzle chamber 9, but a leveling blade or a smooth doctor blade at point 10 can also be used as a leveling element.

The consistencies in question, ie solids contents, are between 50 and 70%, preferably 50 and 60% maximum for the first application layer and between 60 and 70% maximum for the second application layer. It is to be regarded as favorable if a nozzle chamber 6, 9 is provided as the application unit, at the outlet end of which a roller doctor blade 7, 11 with its holder is located in the vicinity of the surface to be coated 8, 12 is arranged. So you have the advantage over the air brush method that you can work with a relatively high consistency overall, but especially with the second application layer. The line pressures in the press nip between the first two rolls 1 and 2 are between 5 and 60 kN / m, preferably 20 to 40 kN / m.

The arrangement according to FIG. 2 has only a total of two web guide rollers 21 and 22, each being assigned an application device of the type described. This arrangement is possible in the case of cardboard because it expands less than paper due to the moistening in the coating unit.

In the case of cardboard, an inexpensive possibility is to provide a roller doctor blade 11 with a holder 12 at the outlet end of the nozzle chamber 9 for the second coating (final dosage) as a dosing element and then to use no further smoothing element. This is shown in Figure 3. A very good coat application can be achieved with a relatively economical use of coating slip.

Es ist danach ein Abrakeln durch eines der bekannten Dosierelemente vorzusehen.FIG. 4 also shows that a transfer roller 17 for the coating slip can also be used for the second coating device. It is then to be doctored by one of the known metering elements.

In a certain area of application, in the case of glue application for paper, the first application layer can be dosed with a doctor blade instead of with the grooves of a roller squeegee, but here the work of the doctor blade must be monitored very closely.
