Description

The invention relates to a knife roller with at least one foil knife, which can be fastened to a roller body part which has a series of suction openings on its circumference for temporarily holding a piece of material cut out from the foil knife, a suction air control channel being connected to the row of suction holes.

Such a knife roller is known from US-A-4 537 588. It is used to cut out the window from window envelopes. While the envelope blank is being transported with the knife roller, the piece of waste created by the window cutout has to be held for a certain time in order to then be handed over to a waste funnel. This is done by the axially aligned single row of suction openings, which open within the area enclosed by the foil knives in the roller surface. A further axially extending row of suction openings is provided in the roller surface, which is connected to its own suction air control channel in the carrier shaft, but this row of suction holes is located in front of the knives in the direction of rotation of the knife roller and is used, at times, the front edge of the envelope blank on the roller surface to hold on.

With this knife roller, only a single window can be cut out and the cut piece of material or waste piece can be taken from the knife roller to a delivery point which follows in the circumferential direction. In addition, only a certain blank format can be processed in which the distance of the window from the front edge of the blank is within a comparatively narrow range.

Furthermore, it is known from US Pat. No. 3,172,321 to provide a counter-roller which interacts with a knife roller for cutting out windows and which transports envelope blanks to be provided with a window past the knife roller and, for this purpose, has a plurality of axially circumferentially spaced axially one behind the other has running rows of suction openings, which can be optionally and controlled acted upon by vacuum. For this purpose, two axial suction air control channels are provided in a carrier shaft, which are connected via essentially radial channels to an axial distributor channel in the peripheral surface of the carrier shaft. A bowl-shaped ring sector provided with the rows of suction holes is mounted on the carrier shaft and can be rotated and fixed relative to the carrier shaft so that two adjacent rows of holes can be connected to the distributor grooves and thus to the suction air control channels. However, these two rows of suction holes, which can be acted upon by vacuum, only serve to hold the leading blank edge on the counter roller. The adjustment only allows adaptation to different formats or distances between the leading edge of the blank and the window to be cut out. This cutting does not take place in the area of the suction hole rows but in a cutting sector following in the direction of rotation with a particularly hard surface and without suction holes. The cut pieces of waste can not be targeted and transport to a predetermined discharge point using vacuum.

The invention has for its object to design a knife roller for envelope production and other applications so that it is as versatile as possible and, above all, is able to safely and reliably dispose of more than just a single piece of waste per blank to be processed.

This object is achieved with the features of claim 1. The subclaims relate to expedient refinements and developments of the invention.

This invention allows, for example, when using twelve rows of suction holes and a corresponding number of suction channels, three suction air control channels and two suction air control disks on the front to safely and reliably dispose of three different pieces of waste, which are distributed over the circumference of the knife roller and have to be transported away and dispensed at the right moment. It is furthermore advantageous that with the help of suction openings in the film knife (s) only the required suction openings of the different rows of suction holes are subjected to vacuum, while the other suction openings are covered.

Suction control in the form described can be carried out regardless of whether the foil knives are held on the multi-part roller body with the aid of magnetic strips or with the aid of a mechanical tensioning and fastening device.

Further features of the invention emerge from dependent claims in connection with the description and the drawing.

According to FIG. 6, both holding and tensioning devices include an approximately semi-cylindrical shell 42, which offset suction openings 43 along a plurality of rows of suction holes in the circumferential direction 44 or along twelve rows of suction holes a to l (Fig. 11). The shell 42 forms, at least in part, the effective roller surface 45, from which the suction openings 43 extend radially inwards to the suction channels 46, which are arranged directly below the roller surface 45. Furthermore, each suction hole row 44 or suction hole row a to l is assigned a suction channel 46, and all suction hole rows 44 and suction channels 46 extend parallel to one another and in the longitudinal direction of the roll.

On its inside 47, the semi-cylindrical shell 42 has three suction air control channels 48, 49 and 50 in the form of channel-shaped recesses. In the assembled state, these suction air control channels 48, 49 and 50 are each assigned to one of the three transverse bores 33, 34 and 35 in the carrier shaft 11.

The first suction air control duct 48 is - as is also apparent from FIG. 6 - connected to the first suction hole row a by means of transverse bores 51. The second suction air control channel 49 also extends parallel to the suction channels 44 over a little more than half the shell length and ends at one end 52 of a control window 53. Basically the same applies to the third suction air control channel 50, which, however, on the other end 54 of the shell 42 ends at a control window 55.

On both end faces 52 and 54 there are also suction air control disks 56 and 57, each with a control channel 58 and 59, from each of which a control window 60 directed radially outward branches off.
