Definitions

  • the present invention concerns an arrangement for connecting panels to each other or to a support structure for making a wall or partition comprising a shaped interconnecting member and fixing members between the interconnecting member and each panel, and in which the interconnecting member has a longitudinal axis, an internal surface and an external surface and elongate slots which are aligned along the longitudinal axis, each panel has a first flat face and the fixing member has a first engagement body which can be inserted into a slot to hold the flat face of the panel firmly against the external surface of the interconnecting member.
  • a connecting arrangement of that type is known in which the fixing members comprise hooks which are fixed by means of screws to the flat faces of the panels and in which the panels with the respective hooks are then hooked to the slots in the interconnecting members. That connecting arrangement requires highly accurate preassembly of the panels with the respective hooks and that increases the overall time for making the wall or partition.
  • the connecting arrangement which is characterised in that it provides for the use of panels each having a terminal edge provided with a longitudinal groove.
  • the fixing members are of cam type and are functionally removable from the panels and each comprise a main axis and a second engagement body spaced from the first engagement body along the main axis and in which the first and second engagement bodies each present radial asymmetry with respect to the axis.
  • Each panel can be positioned on the interconnecting member in such a way that its terminal edge is adjacent to the slots and in section a portion of the flat face co-operates with the interconnecting member.
  • Each fixing member is engageable into one of the slots beside a positioned panel and is capable of rotating about its main axis in an engaged slot in such a way that the first engagement body is held against the internal surface of the interconnecting member after a given rotary movement of the fixing member about the main axis.
  • a fixing member which is engaged with one of the slots by means of the second engagement body is engageable with the longitudinal groove in the positioned panel after rotary movement about said main axis.
  • cam means which are operative between a fixing member engaged with the interconnecting member and the longitudinal groove, such as to exert a clamping action as between the positioned panel and the interconnecting member in response to a further rotary movement of the fixing member about the main axis.
  • the panel connecting arrangement is indicated by reference numeral 15 and is provided for connecting panels 16 to each other or to a support structure 18, forming a single equippable wall or partition 19 and for connecting other panels 17, forming a double equipped wall or partition 20.
  • the arrangement 15 is also suitable for connecting two further pairs of panels 21 and 22 for forming a double equippable wall or partition 23 perpendicular to the walls or partitions 19 or 20.
  • the arrangement 15 is suitable in particular for connecting panels 16, 17, 21 and 22 of rectangular shape each having a first flat face 24, a second flat face 26 parallel and in opposite relationship to the face 24, and the lateral terminal edges 27 each having a longitudinal groove 28.
  • the panels 16, 17, 21 and 22 are modular and can be formed by elementary sub-modules formed by upper and lower edges, with limbs and grooves which are complementary with each other, which are known per se and not shown in the drawings.
  • the support structure 18 is of known type and comprises for example U-shaped members 29 and 30 which are respectively fixed in inverted relationship relative to each other to the ceiling and to the floor of the area in which the wall or partition 19 or 20 is to be set up.
  • the connecting arrangement 15 comprises at least one shaped interconnecting member 31 of elongate shape which is disposed vertically and which has its ends fixed to the members 29 and 30.
  • the interconnecting member 31 has a longitudinal axis 32 and is of a section in the form of part of a Greek letter e, which can be seen as comprising a channel 33 having a bottom 34 and defined by a first side portion 36 and a second side portion 37, and two limbs 38 and 39 which are contiguous and perpendicular respectively to the side portions 36 and 37.
  • the bottom 34 also comprises slots 41 of rectangular shape, with the longer sides parallel to the axis 32.
  • the slots 41 are disposed substantially in alignment along the axis 32 of the interconnecting member 31 at a constant pitch PS and are of a length Ls and a width Ws.
  • Two panels 16 can be pre-positioned on the interconnecting member 31 in such a way that their terminal edges 27 are respectively in contact with the external surfaces of the side portions 36 and 37 and in such a way that a zone of the flat face 24 which is adjacent to the edge 27 of each panel 16 is in contact with a strip 42 of elastomeric material which in turn is in contact with the limbs 38 and 39. Under those conditions, a surface 43 of the groove 28 which is adjacent to the wall 24 projects slightly with respect to an external surface 44 of the interconnecting member 31 in opposite relationship to the bottom 34.
  • the arrangement 15 further comprises a plurality of cam fixing members 51 for rapid fixing of the panels 16 to the interconnecting member 31.
  • Each member 51 has a main axis 52, a first engagement body 53 and a second engagement body 54 which are spaced from each other along the axis 52, and an intermediate body 56 between the bodies 53 and 54.
  • the two engagement bodies 53 and 54 present radial asymmetries with respect to the axis 52, which are provided by substantially rectangular transverse sections.
  • the mutual position as between the bodies 53 and 54 is such that in section the longer sides of the section of the body 53 are substantially parallel to the longer homologous sides of the section of the body 54.
  • the intermediate body 56 on the other hand is cylindrical and coaxial with respect to the main axis 54 and is of a diameter which is a little smaller than the width Ws of the slot 41.
  • the first engagement body 53 is of an approximately parallelepipedic shape which is symmetrical with respect to the axis 52, with a terminal base 57 and an intermediate base 58 which are perpendicular to the axis 52, in which the base 58 is contiguous with the intermediate body 56.
  • the body 53 further has two faces 59 and 61 which project with respect to the body 56 and which define two engagement surfaces 62 and 63 on the base 58.
  • the bases 57 and 58 are of a length Lbl and a width Wbl which are slightly less than the length Ls and the width Ws of each slot 41 in such a way that the body 53 can be easily introduced into one of the slots 41 in the interconnecting member 31.
  • the two faces 59 and 61 of the body 53 have profiles 64 and 66 which are shaped as a radial cam, having slope portions which gradually rise to a flat zone.
  • the two profiles 64 and 66 are symmetrical with respect to the axis 52 and are capable of cooperating with the internal surfaces of the side portions 36 and 37 when an engagement body 53 has been introduced into a slot 41 and has been rotated about the axis 52.
  • the spacing between the flat zones of the profiles 64 and 66 is equal to Lbl and is slightly greater than the spacing between the side portions 36 and 37.
  • the second engagement body 54 is also of an approximately parallelepipedic shape which is symmetrical with respect to the axis 52 and has a terminal base 67 and an intermediate base 68 which are both perpendicular to the axis 52, with the base 68 being contiguous with the intermediate body 56.
  • the two bases 67 and 68 are separated in the direction of the larger dimension by two edges of limited thickness and in the direction of the smaller dimension by two edges which are shaped as cylindrical sectors which are coaxial with the axis 52.
  • the two bases 67 and 68 in the direction of the larger dimension project from the intermediate body 56 and form two limbs 69 and 71 which are in projecting relationship with respect to the body 56.
  • the bases 67 and 68 are of a length Lb2 and a width Wb2 which are slightly greater than the length Ls and the width Ws of each slot 41 in such a way that only the bodies 53 and 56 of the fixing member 51 but not the body 54 can be introduced into the slot 41.
  • the width Wb2 of the bases 67 and 68 is however smaller than the spacing between the external surfaces of the side portions 36 and 37 to permit easy introduction of the fixing member 51 into a slot 41 between two panels 16 which have been pre-positioned on the interconnecting member 31.
  • the base 68 of the member 51 also has a convex surface which is shaped as a cylinder with a generatrix parallel to the edge of greater dimension, which defines on each limb 69 and 71 a cam profile 72 of axial type.
  • a fixing member 51 which has been introduced into a slot 41 is therefore capable of being arrested with a surface of greater convexity of the base 68 against the external surface 44 of the interconnecting member 31.
  • the fixing member 51 further comprises an axial coupling element 73 engageable by a key 74 for easier rotary movement about the axis 52.
  • the coupling element is formed by an axial through hole 76 of hexagonal section and the corresponding key 74 is of hexagonal prismatic section of standardised type.
  • the hole 76 is also screwthreaded in such a way as to provide a fixing section for transverse connecting means 81 for connection to the panels 21 and 22, as will be described hereinafter.
  • the separation zone between the terminal edges 27 of two panels 16 in contact with the side portions 36 and 37 may be engaged by a cover element 75 comprising a U-shaped member 77 of flexible plastics material and a spongey body 78.
  • the member 77 comprises two limbs 79 and an axial recess 80.
  • the limbs 79 in section project laterally from the side portions which constitute the member 77 and are capable of engaging the grooves 28 in the two panels 16.
  • the recess 80 extends axially along the member 77, is of a V-shape and defines at the base a transverse regulating space and at the apex a thin wall with a hinge function for modifying the width of the transverse regulating space.
  • the spongey body 78 fills the internal part of the member 77 and in section projects with respect to the side portions and is easily deformable by a squashing effect.
  • the interconnecting member 31 (see Figures 5 and 6) comprises two identical half-casing portions 82 and 83 of sheet arterial, in which it is possible to see the channel 33 with the respective side portions 36 and 37 and in which the limb 38 has a terminal bend 84.
  • the limb 39 on the other hand has a 180° bent portion followed by a 90° bend which extends in such a way as to form a flat zone 87 aligned with the side portion 37, and which is followed by a further bend 88 parallel to the limb 39 and bent in the same direction as the limb 39 and terminating with a narrow U-shaped bend 89.
  • the interconnecting member 31 is formed by mutual interengagement of the casing portions 82 and 83 which are in inverted relationship with respect to each other and in such a way that the bend 84 of the limb 32 of the casing portion 83 is engaged into the bend 89 of the casing portion 82 and vice-versa in such a way that the bend 84 of the limb 38 of the casing portion 82 is engaged in the bend 89 of the casing portion 83.
  • the limbs 38 and 39 will be formed by a double thickness with respect to that of the sheet used for the casing portions 82 and 83.
  • the casing portions 82 and 83 after being assembled, define a second shaped interconnecting member 85 which is in mirror image relationship with respect to the member 31 and which is capable of supporting and connecting the two panels 17 together to form the double wall or partition 20, together with the member 31 and with the panels 16.
  • the interconnecting member 85 has functional parts for connection to the panels 17, which are identical to those of the member 31 and which are identified by the same reference numerals.
  • the distance between the limbs 38 and 39 of the member 31 and the homologous limbs 39 and 38 of the member 85 define the cavity in the double wall or partition 20.
  • Assemblly of the two panels 17 to the interconnecting member 85 is effected by means of the fixing members 51 in a manner which is entirely similar to the procedure already described with reference to the panels 16 and the member 31.
  • the upper and lower ends of the members 31 and 85 are also engaged to the members 29 and 30 of the structure 18 at top and bottom of the assembly and are fixed to those members by known means which are not shown in the drawings.
  • connection of the two panels 16 to form the wall or partition 19 provides that the two panels 16 (see also Figure 3) are prepositioned on the interconnecting member 31 as described hereinbefore.
  • the operator then fully introduces a fixing member 51 into a slot 41, positioning the longer edges of the base 68 of the fixing body 51 in front of the grooves 28 in the panels 16.
  • the operator rotates the fixing member 51 around its axis 52, causing the surfaces 64 and 66 of the first engagement body 53 to engage against the bottom 34 of the interconnecting member 31 and causing the cylindrical edges of the limbs 69 and 71 to be introduced into the grooves 28 in the panels 16.
  • a further rotary movement of the fixing member 51 about the axis 53 causes the cam profile 72 of the limbs 69 and 71 of the engagement body 54 to urge the surfaces 43 towards the limbs 38 and 39 of the interconnecting member 31, applying a clamping action in respect of the two panels 16 towards the interconnecting member 31 and causing deformtion of the strips 42.
  • the rotary movement of the fixing member 51 in the slot 41 is also resisted by the cam profiles 64 and 66 rubbing against the internal surfaces of the side portions 36 and 37.
  • the fixing member 51 will be fixedly locked by friction against the interconnecting member 31 when the flat portions of the profiles 64 and 66 are in interference relationship with the side portions 36 and 37, resiliently deforming the latter. Assembly of the panels 16 to the interconnecting member 31 is finally completed by the insertion of further fixing members 51 into the slots 41, engagement thereof in the grooves 28 and subsequent locking thereof between the side portions 36 and 37 of the member 31.
  • the wall or partition 19 is formed by connecting a submodule to the members 31 in such a way that the grooved connecting edge thereof is disposed downwardly and the complementary reduced edge is disposed upwardly.
  • a further sub-module will subsequently be fixed to the members 31 above the preceding module in such a way that the grooved lower edge is engaged on to the upper reduced edge of the preceding sub-module in per se known manner which is not shown in the drawings.
  • the operator can cover the separation zone between the two contiguous panels 16 by means of the cover element 75.
  • the cover element 75 For that purpose he inserts a first limb 79 into the groove 28 in a first panel 16 and slightly compresses the side portions of the member 77 until the second limb 79 bears against the edge 27 of the second panel.
  • the operator then presses the element 75 perpendicularly to the panels until the second limb 79 is introduced into the groove 28 in the second panel 16.
  • the spongey body 78 is deformed in the direction of its thickness to a variable extent along the longitudinal axis in dependence on the possible presence of the fixing members 51 which have been fitted into the slots 41.
  • the resiliency of the body 78 now holds the limbs 79 bearing against the surfaces of the grooves 28 which are most closely adjacent to the external face and urges the side portions of the member 77 laterally so as to cause them to mate with the edges 27 of the two panels 16. Any differences in width in the space between the edges 27, due to the production tolerances as between the components or operating tolerances, are recovered by opening of the recess 80 to a greater or lesser degree, without detriment from the aesthetic point of view.
  • the transverse connecting means 81 comprise a first elongate plate 91 of sheet material having a longitudinal axis and of a section comprising a flat main body 92 and two 90° bends which define a first limb 93 and a second limb 94.
  • the main body 92 is provided with a series of holes 96 which are aligned with respect to the longitudinal axis and which are at a pitch equal to the pitch PS of the slots 41 in the interconnecting member 31.
  • the two limbs 93 and 94 are disposed at the sides of the main body 92 symmetrically with respect to a plane 97 passing through the longitudinal axis of the plate 91.
  • the limbs 93 and 94 respectively include two bends 98 and 99 of Z-shape and symmetrical with respect to the plane 97, defining two terminal portions 101 and 102 which are perpendicular to the main body 92, and two engagement surfaces which are equidistant from the body 92.
  • the terminal portions 101 and 102 are capable of being inserted into the grooves 28 in the panels 21 and 22.
  • the connecting means 81 further comprise a second elongate plate 106 of sheet material having a plane of symmetry 107 and a section comprising a flat main body 108 and two greatly pronounced Z-shaped bends 109 and 110 which define two lateral flat portions 111 and 112 which are parallel to the main body 108 and which are equidistant from a flat surface tangential to the body 108.
  • the portions 111 and 112 also have two 90° bends 113 and 114 respectively, which define a first limb 116 and a second limb 117.
  • the main body 108 is further provided with holes 118 which are aligned along the plane 107 and which are at a pitch equal to the pitch Ps of the slots 41 in the interconnecting member 31.
  • the limbs 116 and 17 are perpendicular to the surface which is tangential to the main body 108 and are separated from each other by a distance which is smaller than the distance between the terminal portions 101 and 102 of the plate 91.
  • the limbs 116 and 117 are capable of forming a support for a zone of the flat faces 24 of the two panels 21 and 22, bearing against the edges 27, with the interposition of a strip 119 of elastomeric material, and the distance between the limbs 116 and 117 defines the cavity between the panels 21 and 22 in the wall or partition 23. That cavity may be equal to that in the walls or partitions 20 so as to be able to complete the wall or partition 23 with interconnecting members identical to the members 31 and 85.
  • the means 81 also optionally comprise a cover plate 121 of elongate shape of plastics material, having a longitudinal plane of symmetry and being of a section defined by a flat main body 122 and two 90° bends which define a first limb 123 and a second limb 124.
  • the body 122 also comprises longitudinal holes at a pitch Ps but the limbs 123 and 124 are separated by a distance which is greater than the distance between the terminals portions 101 and 102 of the first elongate plate 91.
  • the limbs 123 and 124 have two L-shaped bends 127 and 128 which are directed inwardly and which are capable of co-operating with the edges 27 of the panels 21 and 22.
  • the means 81 comprise screwthreaded bolts 131 for fixing the cover plate 121 and the plates 91 and 106 to fixing members 51 which have been previously locked to the interconnecting member 31, with the interposition of washers 132.
  • the elongate plate 106 can be pre-positioned in superposed relationship on the plate 91 and the plate 91 can be disposed in superposed relationship with the plate 121 in such a way that the holes 118 are in alignment with the holes 96 and with the holes in the plate 121. Under those conditions the longitudinal planes of symmetry 97 and 107 of the plates 91 and 106 and that of the plate 121 will be coincident.
  • connection of the two panels 21 and 22 for forming a double wall or partition 23 which is transverse with respect to the wall or partition 19 provides that the three plates 121, 91 and 106 have been pre-positioned as described hereinbefore.
  • the operator then positions the three plates against the surface 26 of the two panels 16 and in such a way that the holes in the three plates are approximately coplanar with the main axes 52 of the fixing members 51 which are locked to the interconnecting member 31.
  • the operator will screw the bolts 131 into the screwthreaded holes 76 in the fixing members 51 until the assembly of the three plates 121, 91 and 106 is locked against a zone of the two panels 16 which are contiguous to the member 31.
  • the distance between the external surface of the limb 116 and the internal surface of the terminal portion 101 is slightly less than the thickness defined by the distance between the wall 43 of the groove 28 in the panels 21 and 22 and the corresponding surface 24, with the superposed elastomeric strip 119. The same applies respectively in regard to the corresponding distance between the limb 117 and the terminal portion 102.
  • Fitment of the panels 21 and 22 to the plate 91 and 106 now provides that the terminal zone of the surface 24 bears against the limb 116 with the interposition of the strip 119 and subsequent engagement of the surface 43 with the terminal portion 101, by means of distortion and deformation of the strip 119.
  • the panel 21 is correctly positioned when the edge 27 is in contact with the bend 98 in the limb 93. Under those conditions the bend 127 of the plate 121 is in contact with the edge 27 and is slightly deformed, effectively covering the internal engagement zones between the panel 21 and the limb 93.
  • Fitment of the panel 22 will be effected in a similar manner, with the insertion of the edge 27 between the limb 117 and the terminal portion 102 and the corresponding closure action in respect of the limb 124 against the edge 27.
  • the panel connecting arrangement may be the subject of variations, modifications and improvements without departing from the scope of the invention.
  • the arrangement 15 ( Figures 8 and 9) is also capable of connecting panels 139 which do not have any groove at the edge, as when using panes 141 of glass for transparent or translucent walls or partitions.
  • the surfaces for engagement against the edge of the panel are provided by means of a metal frame 142 which is for example of a W-shape, having a recess 143 and being clamped on to an edge of the pane 141 of glass by means of a U-shaped seal 144 of elastomeric material, using a well-known procedure.
  • the limb 59 or 61 of the fixing member 51 will act on the recess 143 in the frame 142 and not directly against the edge of the panel, but with effects equivalent to those described.
  • the arrangement 15 can connect together without problems panels 16 with a grooved edge and panels 141 which are without such an edge.
  • the casing portions 82 and 83 are also provided with seats 150 for fixing horizontal stiffening transverse members (not shown).
  • the arrangement 15 of the invention can also be used for providing the double wall or partition 20 (see Figure 6) with fire-resistant and/or sound-proofing means.
  • a U-shaped member 152 which comprises in section a flat portion 153 and two side portions 154 and 156.
  • the U-shaped member 152 can be fixed to the casing portion 82 or 83 by the flat portion 153 in contact with a central part of the flat zone 87 by means of a screw arrangement 157 in such a way as to define suitable support surfaces between the side portions 154 and 156 and the side portions 38 and 39.
  • Two sheets 158 and 159 of fire-resistant and/or sound-proofing material can be inserted between the above-mentioned support surfaces.
  • the space between the side portions 154 and 156 can be used for receiving a panel 161 of heat-insulating material.
  • cam portions which are operative to clamp the panels 16 and 17 to the interconnecting members 31 and 85 may alternatively be provided on parts of the fixing member 51 which are different from those described.
  • the cam portions may be provided in the form of radial cams with a rising slope portion on the engagement surfaces 62 and 63 of the engagement body 51 or finally as asymmetrical deformations of the bottom 34 of the interconnecting member 31, which are adjacent to the slots 41.
  • the fixing members 51 may be made from different materials.
  • the members 51 are made of zamak and by microfusion.
  • the members 51 are made of sintered ferrous material using specific technologies of such materials which are known per se.
  • the members 31 and 85 may be of configurations different from those described and may be for example without the limbs 38 and 39. In that case the edges of the flat faces 24 bear directly against the external surface 44 of the interconnecting member and each fixing member 51 correspondingly has an intermediate body of larger axial dimensions to adapt to the separating thickness between the surface 24 and the engagement surface 43 of the groove 28.
  • the radial asymmetries in respect of the fixing members 51 may be of a different shape from the rectangular configuration illustrated and the fixing member 51 may provide engagement bodies with a single projection when the fixing member is provided for fixing a single panel 16 to the support structure 18.
