Abstract

1373618 Structural joints A J TOTI 16 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 58567/71 Heading F2M [Also in Divisions E1-E2] Two deformable sheets or panels are joined to a connector number 1 to form a structural assembly by placing the adjacent edges of the sheets in at least one space between a locking flange and a web member of the connector member, the flange being of deformable material and being initially bent to V form and the web having a shoulder forming a recess, whereby after inserting the sheet edge or edges the locking flange can be forced against the sheet to clamp it and then be straightened out to flat condition whereupon a tooth formation on one edge of the locking flange engages the sheet adjacent the shoulder and co-operates with the recess to lock the sheet edge in position. In one embodiment, Figs. 2 and 4, two web members 8 extend at right angles to each other (as indicated by 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, not shown) from a central portion 3 which is integral with the web members and with corresponding locking flanges each comprising bent portions 13, 14 which are spaced from the web so that an edge portion 24 of a deformable sheet 21 can be inserted between each web and the corresponding locking flange. Each web/locking flange assembly is. then passed through a series of rollers, the first roller 27 (Fig. 2) forming a bent shoulder 29 in the sheet edge portion 24, the second roller (32, Fig. 3, not shown) pressing the locking flange against the edge portion 24 to clamp the sheet, the third roller 37, Fig. 4, partially straightening the locking flange whereby tooth formation 16 at its free edge engages the shoulder 29, and a final roller (42, Fig. 5, not shown) completing the flattening of the locking flange whereby tooth formation 16 forces the shoulder 29 into recess 12 in the web portion. Figure 7 shows a modification for connecting together sheets 46, 47 arranged in the same plane, in the final flattened condition of the locking flanges. Sealing strips 66 are inserted prior to compression of the assembly. The Specification describes further modifications similar to that of Fig. 7, including one (Fig. 10, not shown) wherein only one web member and one locking flange are used to clamp simultaneously both adjacent sheet edge portions. In the modification of Fig. 13 the web portion 117 is of T shape in cross-section and the locking flanges 118, 119 are compressed from the chainline position to. the solid position or an overcentre position to cause the tooth formations 133, 134 to deform edge portions 124, 126 of curved panel members 127, 128 against recessed shoulders 122 in headed portion 121. Where the panels 127, 128 are ceiling panels, an additional connector member 141 is used to secure a wall panel 147 as shown.
