Definitions
- the invention relates to a thin-film absorber for camouflaging metallic objects against high-frequency electromagnetic radiation, consisting of at least one layer made of a plastic with a dielectric constant e with embedded carbon powder.
- Absorbers come in many different designs, e.g. known as a space absorber. These are made of plastics, in particular foams, and have pyramid-shaped absorber elements protruding into the free space. Such space absorbers are unsuitable for cladding metallic objects which are to be camouflaged against incident radar beams due to their spatial extent and also because of their low mechanical strength.
- a radar absorber which is made up of different layers of plastic.
- the plastic material of the layers be provided with different amounts of carbon powder in order to achieve a gradually increasing or decreasing effect with regard to the attenuation or absorption of radar radiation.
- the object is achieved in that the side of the layer facing the object has a plurality of pyramid-shaped elevations and that the space between the object and the layer is filled with a plastic with a dielectric constant e z , where monyi z ⁇ .
- the single figure shows a schematically simplified section through a thin-film absorber according to the invention.
- the absorber is connected to a metallic object via a separating layer 5.
- the total thickness D is approximately 2-3 mm in total. About 90% of this is due to the height H of the pyramid-shaped elevations 3.
- the height H corresponds to about a quarter of the mean operating wavelength.
- the base width L of the pyramid-shaped elevations measures approximately half of the mean operating wavelength.
- the height H and the base width L can also be varied according to a distribution function over the entire area of the thin-film absorber according to a particular embodiment.
- the side of the absorber facing away from object 1 is designed to be flat in the exemplary embodiment. If necessary, a surface structure is also conceivable.
- Layer 2 and the pyramid-shaped elevations are produced in one operation. They consist of an electrically conductive polymer, such as thermoplastic polyurethane or polyamide.
- the electrical conductivity of the layer results from the mixture of a proportion of non-conductive polymer with a proportion of conductive polymer, the proportion of the conductive polymer becoming smaller and smaller.
- the conductivity itself is achieved by a proportion of about 3 to 6% pure carbon. This proportion is very low compared to conventional space absorbers, which have a carbon content of around 30%. This is achieved by the special type of carbon distribution in the polymer matrix, which is set by the extrusion parameters.
- the setting of the desired value of the complex dielectric constant can be carried out relatively easily by checking the direct current resistance of the raw material present as granules during the manufacturing process (extrusion).
- the space 4 between the layer 2 and the metallic object 1 is filled with a plastic similar to the material of the layer 2.
- the dielectric constant is set to be less than or equal to that of layer 2.
- ferromagnetic or dielectric fillers can be introduced.
- the value of the dielectric constant e thus falls within the distance D when the metallic object 1 is approached, while the permeability increases to the same extent. It follows from this that the effect of the thin-film absorber is based on the superimposition of several physical effects (interference, ohmic losses and magnetic relaxation).
- the gap 4 can be cast in various ways. On the one hand, there is the possibility of filling the spaces between the pyramid-shaped elevations 3 with a plastic described above and then applying the finished plate-like product to the separating layer 5 by means of an adhesive on the object 1. On the other hand, an adhesive with the aforementioned properties can be used to encapsulate the intermediate space 4. This results in the manufacturing advantage that the thin-film absorber 2, 3 can be cast in one operation and glued to the metallic object. This also reduces the total cost of the absorber coating.
Abstract
