Definitions
- the present invention relates to display apparatus, and more particularly is concerned with display apparatus in which a plurality of intermittently rotatable vanes is able to display one of a number of images.
- Such display apparatus is known in which the vanes, typically 24 per unit, are made from a triangular aluminium extrusion and an image, such as an advertising poster is attached directly to the vanes using an adhesive.
- an image such as an advertising poster is attached directly to the vanes using an adhesive.
- Such display apparatus incorporates a number of disadvantages. For example, because of the natural radius formed at the tips of the vanes it is imperative that the edge of the image is trimmed back from the radius. If this is not done, the images will tend to lift away from the vane and will subsequently foul the display. The amount trimmed degrades the resolution of the overall image.
- a further disadvantage is that the advertising poster must be cut and prepared to produce the required size of strips prior to mounting the strips on the vanes.
- the strips are then glued to one side of each of the vanes using an adhesive such as a double sided adhesive tape; this is a particularly labour intensive task. Once this task has been completed, it remains possible that the strips will peel away from the vanes and foul the display. Further, it is clearly not possible to exchange the vanes without replacing all three images.
- a display apparatus comprising a plurality of intermittently rotatable vanes for displaying in sequence one of a number of images, wherein each vane comprises a carrier incorporating clip means for removably attaching thereto a number of faces equal in number to the number of images.
- the carrier may be provided with clip means for removably attaching thereto three faces.
- the carrier may be formed as a generally triangular body with clip means provided on each face of the body.
- the carrier may be formed with additional support means for edge regions of the faces, the support means incorporating a web extending from each apex of the body. Longitudinal ribs may be provided on the reverse side of each face in the edge regions thereof for engaging with the support means provided on the carrier.
- the clip means may comprise a cylindrical element and socket arrangement.
- An end cap may engage each end of the carrier by way of pairs of protrusions provided on the end cap.
- An image may be printed on each face of each vane.
- Figures 1 to 3 show a display apparatus 1 which comprises a number, twenty-four as shown in Figure 1, of triangular vanes 2 which are arranged in a rectangular frame 3 and supported by a stand 4.
- the vanes 2 are intermittently rotatable by drive means, which is not shown but which is well known to the skilled person, so as to display one of three images, a part of each separate image being shown by each face of each vane.
- the vanes 2 may be rotatable simultaneously, or sequentially as shown in Figure 1, when changing from one image to another.
- FIGS 2 and 3 show that the vanes 2 each comprise an intermittently rotatable carrier 5 which is mounted in the frame.
- Carrier 5 comprises a generally triangular body, for example of extruded aluminium, which is provided for each of the three faces 8 of the vane with a part of a clip mechanism 6 in the form of a generally cylindrical element 7.
- the three faces 8 of the vane are made, for example, of a plastics material and are each provided with a complementary part of clip mechanism 6 in the form of a generally cylindrical socket 9 engaging with the cylindrical element 7 so as to retain the faces 8 on the carrier 5.
- the clip mechanism 6 and/or the faces 8 are dimensioned so that the faces engage along their edges so as to form a vane having a triangular cross-section with substantially no radius along the tips of the vane as can be seen from Figure 2.
- the faces 8 are readily removable from the carrier 5 there is no need to apply an image to each face with an adhesive. Instead, it is possible to print the image directly onto a set of, for example, twenty-four faces 8. This not only allows the full surface area of each face 8 to be used, but also allows any one or more of the sets of faces to be exchanged quickly and simply without the use of skilled labour and without the requirement for all three images to be changed simultaneously. This is of considerable advantage when it is only necessary to change one or two of the images.
- the drive mechanism of the display apparatus does not require any modification to operate with the new vane arrangement, it should be noted that, because the entire vanes do not need to be removed from the frame, it is also possible to simplify the drive mechanism for the vanes compared with display apparatus having removable vanes. This can readily be accomplished by the skilled person and merely involves obviating the mechanism which enables the vanes to be removed.
- the precise configuration of the carrier 5 and of the faces 8 can vary from that shown in Figures 2 and 3 provided the carrier and the faces incorporate a suitable clip mechanism.
- Figure 4 shows a carrier 11 which is made, for example, of extruded aluminium and comprises a generally triangular hub portion 12 which is hollow.
- Figure 5 shows, on a different scale to Figure 4, the three faces 17 which may be made of a plastics material and which each comprise a generally flat face portion 18 for bearing a part of an image and a generally cylindrical socket 19 for engaging with one of the cylindrical elements 13 of the carrier 11 so as to complete the clip mechanism.
- the socket 19 is mounted on the rear of the face portion 18 by way of a short flange 20.
- the outer edges of the face 17 are chamfered at an angle of substantially 30° to enable a vane to be formed with substantially no radius at the tips as shown in Figure 5.
- the edge regions of the face 17 are supported by longitudinal ribs 21 on supports 15 of the carrier 11 to eliminate or at least reduce any distortion of the vane in the edge regions thereof.
- the clip mechanism need not of course be a cylindrical element and socket arrangement, but could be any suitable clip mechanism for retaining the three faces in position relative to the carrier and to themselves.
- the end cap 25 shown in Figures 6 and 7 comprises a generally triangular body 26 having dimensions somewhat less than the dimensions of the faces of the vanes, with a triangular flange 27 at one end of the body 26 having dimensions substantially the same as the dimensions of the faces of the vanes.
- a spigot 28 for mounting the vane in a rotatable manner.
- Extending within the body 26 and projecting beyond the flange 27 are three pairs of protrusions 29, 30 which are dimensioned to fit over the webs 16 of the carrier 11, the ends of the protrusions 29, 30 being chamfered to assist the positioning of the end cap 25 on the webs 16.
- Rotation of the vanes is controlled by way of a cam mechanism (not shown) well known in the art, although other means can be provided for controlling the rotation of the vanes if desired.
