- the present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of alkali metal chlorate, one step of which is the electrolysis in an aqueous medium of the chloride of said metal in the anode compartment of an electrolysis cell of the "chlorine-soda" type compartmentalized by and on the other side of a single cationic membrane with selective permeability in an anode compartment and in a cathode compartment which contains an aqueous solution of hydroxide of said alkali metal and in which hydrogen is produced, characterized in that the manufacture chlorate is ensured in a single step by said electrolysis by electrolyzing at a pH of value between about 6.2 and about 6.6, an aqueous solution of chloride containing, per liter, an amount of said chloride between about 100 g. and about 200 g. and an amount of said chlorate such that the chlorate produced can be isolated from the aqueous electrolyzed chloride solution, directly by crystallization.
