Definitions

  • the invention relates to a connector and a method for connecting and tapping an electric, multi-wire, electromagnetically shielded cable, more particularly intended for low current installations, for example local area networks with multiple stations where the various stations are connected in parallel to the along the same cable for their data exchanges.
  • the electromagnetic shielding of a cable is usually constituted by an electrically conductive sheath which surrounds the conductive wires used for data transmission and which is covered with a single or multi-layer protective sheath.
  • the invention therefore provides a method as specified above which requires only a minimum of preparation of the cable at the mounting location and which is simple to carry out and to mount on a shielded multifilar electric cable of the type incorporating under a external sheathing, monolayer or multilayer, a plurality of electrically isolated conductive wires from one another and an electromagnetic shield forming a sheath for these conductive wires and optionally for at least one electrical continuity drain for shielding.
  • the tap connector is intended to be mounted at a chosen location along the cable where an annular outer sheathing portion and at least part of the sheath formed by the shielding at this location are eliminated. It is made up of two parts, complementary and separable, which allow the positioning and immobilization of the cable crossing between them, in an area where this cable is immobilized when the two parts are combined.
  • the stitching connector according to the invention is intended to be mounted on a screened multi-wire cable, in particular of a cable 1 as shown in one or other of Figures 1 and 3.
  • a cable 1 comprises conductive wires 2, here two in number, each covered by an individual insulating sheathing 3.
  • These wires are housed inside an electromagnetic shield 4 formed for example using fine conductive wires, most often obliquely disposed relative to the conductive wires 2 which they surround by forming a sheath, such as 4A. .
  • the electromagnetic shielding can alternatively be produced in the form of a thin conductive strip 4B arranged helically around the assembly formed by the conductive wires 2 and it is then associated with at least one drain 5, formed by a wire here multiconductor disposed on along the conductive wires 2 sheathed in insulation, in electrical contact with the conductive strip 4B inside the shielded sheath formed by the latter around the sheathed conductive wires 2 as can be seen in FIG. 3. It is also consider incorporating a drain into a sheath made of metal wires.
  • the electromagnetic shielding is usually covered with a cladding 6 comprising at least one insulating layer.
  • connection of a connector leads to locally open the cable at the location provided for mounting the connector, so as to access the conductive wires 2 and the electromagnetic shielding formed by sheath 4A or drain 5.
  • This opening is effected by a localized elimination of an annular portion of the cladding 6 covering the electromagnetic shielding 4A or 4B and of at least part of this shielding in the area of the cable where the insulating cladding has been removed.
  • the conductive strip 4B is eliminated in the area of the cable where it has been exposed, in the case of a cable as presented in FIG. 3; the electrical continuity between the parts of conductive strip 4A situated on either side of the portion of cable devoid of conductive strip is then ensured by the drain 5.
  • the sheath of fine metal wires 4A which is capable of forming the electromagnetic shielding can be cut out by means of a cutting tool, not shown, in the cable zone where the connector is to be placed.
  • a cutting tool not shown
  • two diametrically opposite notches are produced, which make it possible to obtain two conductive connections 4A1 which ensure the electrical continuity of the shielding and which allow free access to the conductive wires 2.
  • the tapping connector is provided according to the invention for the connection of equipment, not shown, to a cable 1 thus prepared, it is designed to be put in place at a prepared location which is produced at any point of a cable 1 possibly permanently installed, it is therefore at least partially separable into two complementary parts 8, 9 arranged to be placed on either side of this cable.
  • the part 8 is arranged to form a base allowing the connector to be fixed on a flat support 10, in particular a printed circuit board, before or after connection of the connector to the cable.
  • This attachment to a support is effected for example by riveting or by a screw-nut system at the level of fixing holes 11 passing through a base 12 of the part 8 forming a base.
  • the two parts 8, 9 are here made of insulating material, for example molded, and are pressed against each other in a predetermined manner, possibly immobilizing between them a cable 1 duly prepared, as indicated above, in the zone provided. connector connection.
  • the attachment of the additional part 9 forming a flange to the complementary part 8 forming the base is here carried out using screws 13 and nuts 14 - see Figure 5-.
  • the heads of the screws are accessible from the outside of the assembled connector, whether or not mounted on the support 10, they are supported for this purpose in through conduits 15 of the complementary part 9 which open on the other side of the connector with respect to the base 12.
  • the nuts 14 are accessible here from the outside of the connector before mounting the latter on the support 10, they are housed and immobilized in rotation in conduits 16 where they bear during screwing.
  • the conduits 16 pass entirely through part 8 respectively on either side of the path provided for the cable to be connected between, on the one hand, parts 8 and 9, on the other hand, two chimneys 17 provided on part 8 for the passage of the screws 13 on either side of said cable path.
  • the correct positioning of the part 9 on the part 8 is here obtained by cooperation of the chimneys 17 with housings of complementary shape formed in the part 9.
  • the walls 18 opposite the two chimneys which are parallel to the cable path allow the guiding in translation of a pusher unit from part 9 during immobilization and connection operations. These are obtained by driving in the part 9 in a direction defined by the axes of the conduits 15, 16 during the screwing of the screws 13.
  • the length of the portion of cable stripped of an annular portion of its external sheathing for connection is chosen so that the ends of the remaining portions of this cladding, which are obtained after elimination of a portion which connected them, come to rest in notches 19 complementary to the parts 8 and 9 between which these cladding portions are immobilized, when the parts 8 and 9 are brought together by screwing.
  • Parallel grooves 21 are formed between the walls 18 of the chimneys 15, each of them is designed to receive either a drain 5, or a conductive connection, 4A1 or an insulated conductor 2.
  • small parallel walls 22 project from the complementary part 8 between the chimneys 15 parallel to the walls 18 so as to form open grooves, both at their two ends and laterally towards the joint zone between parts 8, 9.
  • Conductive connecting pieces 23 are provided in each groove to ensure electrical continuity by contact between the equipment not shown that serves the connector and a conductive wire, a drain or a conductive connection.
  • Each of these conductive parts 23 projects on the one hand into a groove 21 on the other hand under the base 12 of the part 8.
  • connection lugs intended to allow the direct connection of the connector to a circuit produced on its support 10.
  • This support is for example a printed circuit board that includes the equipment to be served and the connection tabs are plugged or pressed, in a manner known per se, in or on conductive tracks of this plate.
  • the connecting pieces 23 protrude for example in the grooves by individual extensions with stripped connection slot, as shown for the pieces referenced 23A in FIGS. 2 and 5, these slots are intended for the connection of the conductive wires 2 with individual sheathing insulator 3 and possibly from the drain 5.
  • a suitable connecting piece 23A is then provided for this drain in one of the grooves 21.
  • Individual pushers 24A extend the part 9, they cooperate, in a manner known per se, each with an extension with a self-stripping connection slot of a groove for ensuring the connection of a conducting wire 2, when the two parts 8 and 9 are pressed against each other by screwing the screws 13.
  • each stud is then intended for the connection of a drain 5 or a conductive link 4A1.
  • Each drain or conductive link is pressed against a stud in a groove by an appropriate individual pusher projecting from the part 9 in parallel with the individual pusher 24A.
  • the different pushers each have a support end shaped so suitable for their own use, according to known techniques.
  • the number of grooves 21 and their respective assignments are of course chosen as a function of the number of insulated conductive wires 2, drains 5 and / or conductive connections 4A1 to be connected.
  • connection tabs located under the base can also allow contact of these tabs with complementary connection members of a usual plug connector then plugging in on these tabs in the usual usual manner.
  • the connector composed of parts 8 and 9 can itself be electromagnetically shielded to ensure continuity of the shielding of the cable on which it is mounted. This can be obtained by metallization of the surfaces of the insulating material constituting the parts 8 and 9, for example in the zones situated outside the assembled connector, and by electrical connection by contact of these zones with the shielding of the cable for example at one or more connection lugs of the connecting pieces 23B.
