Description

  • This invention relates to a paraffin-waxing device for a textile winding machine which transfers the yarn from a package on the feed side to the package under formation.
  • More particularly, the invention relates to a paraffin-waxing device having a yarn guide pin fixed to the centre of a flange between the support pegs for the paraffin wax disc, said yarn guide pin being positioned axially by spacer elements so that its slot intercepts the advancing yarn in order to deviate it in such a manner as to obtain the correct contact pressure between the yarn and the paraffin wax disc.
  • The term "yarn" used hereinafter in the description of the invention and in the claims indicates any type of yarn, and the term "paraffin wax" indicates any type of composition similar to the solid paraffin wax used to lubricate or coat the yarn for the purpose of reducing its coefficient of friction in its sliding along the guide members during the subsequent operating stages, and for the other typical purposes of paraffin-waxing. Essentially, paraffin-waxing improves yarn working and consequently the quality of the finished product.
  • Winding forms part of the fibre working process in the textile industry and part of the winding procedure involves passing the yarn through a device which applies paraffin wax to the yarn. For this purpose a paraffin wax disc or roller is used, rotated by a belt or geared motor, the yarn sliding along its top front. This allows the paraffin wax to be distributed uniformly over the entire length of the yarn. It also results in uniform consumption of the paraffin wax disc and uniform contact with the yarn. Paraffin-waxing devices are known which operate reliably and provide constant paraffin-waxing of the yarn, so satisfying the essential requirement of a paraffin-waxing device for use in a winding unit.
  • Their design ensures good treatment of the yarn, although their operational aspects could well be further improved in the sense of incorporating simple means which would allow the quantity of paraffin wax transferred to the yarn to be precisely adjusted, ie from the lightest application to the heaviest application according to the requirements of the client.
  • With regard to this latter, the following should be noted. There are unfortunately no fixed rules regarding the quantity of paraffin wax to be applied to the yarn, because too many parameters are involved, such as the type and count of the yarn, the type of paraffin wax, temperature, humidity and many other factors.
  • As stated, the main purpose of paraffin-waxing is to reduce to a minimum the coefficient of friction between the yarn and its contacting members, and in doing this it is necessary in each case to experimentally determine the optimum quantity of paraffin wax to deposit on the yarn, this depending on the type of paraffin wax used and the nature of the yarn. Generally, to obtain this precise quantification of the paraffin wax applied to the yarn, yarn guide lever mechanisms or yarn tensioning eyelets of complicated construction and adjustment are used in known paraffin-waxing devices.
  • Said known means deviate the moving yarn to a greater or lesser extent to cause it to slide over the front surface of the paraffin wax disc at different pressure.
  • As is known to the expert of the art, the primary factor which directly influences paraffin-waxing is the pressure with which the moving yarn rests on and presses against the paraffin wax disc. The ratio of the quantity of paraffin wax deposited on the yarn to the pressure of the moving yarn against the front surface of the paraffin wax disc is almost linear.
  • The pressure of the moving yarn against the paraffin wax disc is directly related to the deviation to which the yarn path is subjected by yarn guide elements which compel it to envelop about the substantially ring-shaped front surface of the paraffin wax disc.
  • In known devices the elements which affect the path deviation of the moving yarn are unreliable in operation because their adjustment depends at times on the ability and diligence of the service operator.
  • The present invention provides an improvement in the paraffin-waxing device, and in particular an improvement in those elements or means used for deviating the moving yarn for the purpose of obtaining precise regulation of the quantity of paraffin wax to be deposited on the yarn, which satisfies the following objects:
    - to allow the yarn pressure on the front surface of the paraffin wax disc to be adjusted to exactly the same value for the entire succession of winding units;
    - to allow the quantity of paraffin wax which adheres to the yarn to be predetermined according to the technical requirements of the yarn being worked, by simple and rapid adjustments by the service operator which do not depend on his ability or diligence. All the aforesaid drawbacks are jointly and separately obviated and all the listed objects attained according to the invention by an improvement in a paraffin-waxing device for a textile winding machine comprising a disc of solid paraffin wax for depositing a predetermined quantity of paraffin wax on yarn being wound onto a forming package from a feed package, said paraffin wax disc being carried by a shaft on which it is mobile axially by the action of a compression spring which urges it against pegs projecting from a frontal flange on which they are integrally fixed. At the centre of said flange between said pegs there is fixed a yarn guide pin the position of which, or its axial projection from the flange, is determined by spacer elements of substantially flat washer form. Said spacer elements are inserted or withdrawn from between said yarn guide pin and said frontal flange to deviate the advancing yarn to a greater or lesser extent in order to obtain the correct contact pressure between the yarn and the paraffin wax disc. According to one embodiment, the central yarn guide pin cantilever-fixed onto said flange is axially displaceable by means of screw elements.
  • According to a further embodiment, the central yarn guide pin comprises a yarn interception slot of annular shape, said central yarn guide pin being able to rotate freely about itself. The invention will be more apparent from the detailed description of one embodiment thereof given hereinafter with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawings, together with clarification of further details, in which respect it is to be understood that further embodiments of the invention are possible.
  • On the drawing:
    • Figure 1 is an isometric perspective diagrammatic view of the paraffin-waxing device according to the present invention, showing in particular the path of the yarn deviated by the central yarn guide pin, which by means of its slot determines the correct contact pressure between the yarn and the paraffin wax disc;
    • Figure 2 is a diagrammatic partial longitudinal section through the paraffin-waxing device of Figure 1.
  • In the figures, corresponding parts or parts with identical functions are given the same reference characters for simplicity. The elements which operate in mutual cooperation with the paraffin-waxing elements of the improved device of the present invention are not illustrated, and neither is their operation described, as they are of the known art and are not involved in the improvement of the present invention.
  • In the accompanying figures:
    6 is the yarn being wound onto a forming package from a feed package (neither of which is shown), said yarn travelling from the bottom upwards and passing through the paraffin-waxing device; 7 and 14 are fixed yarn guide elements located respectively one below and one above the paraffin-waxing disc. Said guide elements position the yarn at the entry and at the exit of the paraffin-waxing device; 8 is a shaft of square or polygonal cross-section rotated by the geared motor 16 which by means of said shaft 8 slowly rotates the disc of paraffin wax 2 together with its housing 10; 1 is the central yarn guide pin which by means of its slot intercepts and deviates the yarn which advances through the paraffin-waxing device to cause it to undergo deviation to the extent of obtaining correct contact pressure between the yarn and the paraffin wax disc; 2 is the solid paraffin wax disc or roller housed in its cylindrical housing 10, said paraffin wax disc being urged axially forwards by an elastic element of helical spring type 5. This latter keeps the front surface of the paraffin wax disc constantly resting under slight pressure against the three pegs 4 which project from the flange 18 and are frontally coplanar; 3 are the thin spacer elements of flat washer form inserted between the central yarn guide pin 1 and the front support surface of the flange 18; 15 is the support casing for the paraffin-waxing device, said casing being the element used for its fixing to the frame of the winding unit (not shown); 11 is a set screw or other screw element for axially locking the central yarn guide pin 1 after inserting or withdrawing the spacer or spacers 3; 12 is the slot which intercepts and guides the yarn by centrally deviating it in order to partially envelop it about the frontal substantially ring-shaped surface of the paraffin-waxing disc 2. Said slot can be formed laterally or can extend annularly, its depth and width being conveniently suitable for guiding and deviating the various types of yarns being worked. As is well known in the art, the guide elements for the yarn being worked must have those surfaces in contact with the moving yarn of ceramic or similar material.
  • The operation of the improved paraffin-waxing device of the present invention shown in the figures of the accompanying drawings is apparent.
  • As is well known in the art, the paraffin wax disc 2 is positioned such that its frontal surface urged against the pegs 4 deviates the path of the yarn 6, which is taut between the guide elements 7 and 14. It can be understood that said variation causes the yarn to adhere against the paraffin wax under pressure. This adhesion pressure is greater the greater said deviation. This procedure however does not enable precise control of the quantity of paraffin wax transferred to the yarn to be obtained to work yarns which are slightly different, or to work the same yarn but with a slightly different amount of paraffin-waxing, for optimisation purposes. To effect this it is necessary to carry out experimental tests for each case, by applying one or more spacers 3 to the central yarn guide 1 until that central deviation of the yarn for which optimum application to the yarn being worked is experimentally found. The service operator should carry out this procedure on one winding unit so that after completing the test he will have determined the number of spacers and thus the central deviation for which the quantity of paraffin wax transferred to the yarn is that required.
  • The service operator then sets all the paraffin-waxing devices of the successive winding units to the same number of spacers, to ensure that the paraffin-waxing is constant and equal for all said winding units.
  • It is apparent that modifications can be made to the improvement in the paraffin-waxing device proposed by the present invention, but without leaving the scope of the inventive idea.
