Description

The invention relates to contacts for connector blocks, as well as a method for manufacturing such contacts.

More specifically, the invention relates to the production of contacts for connector blocks used in telephone distributors. We know that a telephone distributor constitutes the interface arranged between a telephone exchange and the cables of a public or private network. Such a distributor comprises a metal frame supporting a first type of connector blocks called "cable heads" and a second type of connector blocks called "strips", connected respectively to the network cables and to the central office. A pair of flexible wires each having a conductor, called a "jumper", is used for each connection between two associated contacts of a cable head and two associated contacts of a strip.

Since the number of jumpers of a telephone distributor is very large since it is of the order of several thousand in the telephone distributors of public exchanges, it is advisable that the connections of the jumpers to the heads of cables and the strips are easy , fast and safe.

Contacts are already known for such connector blocks (cable heads and strips) of the insulation displacement type, that is to say that do not require prior stripping of the end of the insulated conductor. These contacts have a V-shaped notch which is extended by a slot. The width of the slot is slightly less than the diameter of the metallic conductor of a flexible wire of a garter. When a flexible wire from a garter is pushed into a notch, the edges of this cut the insulation and, when the introduction continues, the edges of the slot tighten the metallic conductor (copper) ensuring a good electrical contact.

We have been led to use contacts having increasingly sophisticated functions in such connector blocks. So a very desirable type of contact comprises two contact elements intended to cooperate with two conductors, these two contact elements being electrically connected so that they are at the same potential and also being connected to a contact tail, of elastic type, allowing temporary contact with another analog contact tail or with a test device, inserted in the connector block. So there have already been made such contacts allowing the connection of two conductive wires and having a tail of "cut", that is to say allowing the formation of a temporary contact.

A first known type of contact comprises a flat head having two contact elements, each formed by a notch and a slot. These two contact elements are placed side by side on the head. This contact has drawbacks because the side by side arrangement of the two contact elements increases the width of the contact head, so that the connector blocks must have a large width, for a determined number of contacts.

There are also known insulation displacement contacts comprising several contact elements and formed by folding thin metal strips. More precisely, each contact element is formed by folding a thin strip on itself, the two thicknesses of strip being tightened against each other and each delimiting a V-notch, the two notches being slightly offset so that they successively attack the insulation of a wire introduced into the notches. The contact elements are spaced along the length of the strip which is folded back on itself, in transverse direction, the two contact elements are therefore very far apart and they must be supported both in the connector block .

European patent application No. 171,193 describes a contact having several pairs of contacts, more precisely two pairs of contacts connected to one another. This contact comprises, on either side of a common connecting part, two contact heads connected by a cheek. Each pair of contact heads is intended to fix a single thread. In addition, these contact heads are not of the insulation displacement type. This contact is intended for use in motor vehicles.

British patent application No. 2,129,716 describes a method of manufacturing an electrical insulation displacement contact. According to this method, a V-shaped notch is cut from a blank portion intended to form a contact head, and an elongated zone starting from the tip of the V-shaped notch is subjected to a die-cutting intended to reduce its thickness. Then, a slot is cut in the stamped part. This document indicates that the method is intended to create, in the two contact parts placed on either side of the V-shaped notch, a spacing constraint. The slit must be cut in the stamped part by punching, with a punch of section varying progressively so that, after relaxation of the stress, the edges of the slit are substantially parallel.

The invention relates to new contacts for connector blocks (cable heads and strips) which include two contact elements placed at the same potential, the two contact elements being produced in two contact heads cut from the same piece of wire. 'a flat material and being each formed by a single thickness of this flat material. The two contact heads are spaced from each other and at least one of them has, on the side opposite its contact part, a tail which can flex elastically. A support tongue secured to the other contact head defines a location for bending the tail so that the connecting cheek of the two contact elements is not subjected to excessive force.

More specifically, the invention relates to a method of manufacturing a insulation displacement contact element of the type which comprises a V-notch and a slot, the widest part of the notch opening at one edge of the contact element and the slot extending the notch at its tip; according to the invention, the method comprises:
  • local crushing of an elongated area of a blank of flat material, so that the thickness of the material is reduced to the location provided for the slit and on either side of this location, then
  • cutting the blank so that it forms a V-shaped notch, the point of which is arranged towards the inside of the blank and practically at one end of the elongated zone, and
  • cutting a slot in the elongated zone of reduced thickness, in line with the tip of the notch, in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the contact element.

In one embodiment, the method further comprises forming two contact elements in two heads connected by a cheek, the contact elements being parallel to each other, and folding the blank at the edges of the cheek , in direction parallel to the longitudinal direction of the contact elements.

It is then advantageous that the method further comprises cutting a tongue intended to form a projection, in at least one contact head, and cutting a tail, in the other contact head at least.

The invention also relates to a insulation displacement contact element of the type which has a V-shaped notch and a slot, the widest part of the notch opening at one edge of the contact element and the slot extending the notch at its point ; according to the invention, this element is manufactured by implementing the preceding method according to the invention, and it comprises a substantially rectilinear slot such that the thickness of the material along the edges of the slot and in the vicinity thereof is less than the thickness of the rest of the contact element.

The invention further relates to the application of such an element to a contact for a connector block which comprises two contact elements according to the preceding paragraph, which are formed in two contact heads arranged in two separate parallel planes, the contact being formed of a single member of a flat material, folded along an axis parallel to the longitudinal direction of the elongated contact heads, the folding forming a cheek in the direction substantially parallel to the planes of the heads and parallel to the longitudinal direction of the elements; in addition, at least one of the contact heads has a projection facing the other contact head, this projection being arranged at a distance from the cheek in a direction perpendicular to the folding direction and being placed beyond the cheek on the side thereof which is opposite to that which carries the contact element.

Preferably, the projection carried by one of the contact heads protrudes sufficiently from the plane of this head so that it is normally in contact with the other head.

In one embodiment, one of the contact heads is extended by an elastic tail.

  • la figure 1 est une élévation latérale d'un contact selon l'invention, à une échelle correspondant sensiblement au double de la dimension réelle ;
  • la figure 2 est une vue en plan d'un flan découpé utilisé pour la fabrication d'un contact analogue à celui de la figure 1, mais légèrement simplifié ;
  • la figure 3 est un agrandissement de la partie principale du flan de la figure 2 ;
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge more clearly from the description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawing in which:
  • Figure 1 is a side elevation of a contact according to the invention, on a scale corresponding substantially to twice the actual dimension;
  • Figure 2 is a plan view of a cut blank used for making a contact similar to that of Figure 1, but slightly simplified;
  • Figure 3 is an enlargement of the main part of the blank of Figure 2;
  • Figure 4 is a section along line 4-4 of a contact made from the blank of Figures 2 and 3; and
  • FIG. 5 is a plan view of a blank, illustrating the steps of implementing a method according to the invention.

This contact essentially comprises two contact heads 10, 12. The head 10 is extended by a tail 30, and the two heads are joined by a cheek 26.

As indicated more precisely in FIG. 3, each of the two contact heads 10, 12 has a contact element 14. Each contact element 14 has a V-shaped notch 16, opening at one end of the head, a slot 18 formed in the extension of the tip of the notch, and a hole 20 in which the slot 18 ends. It is noted in FIGS. 3 and 4 that the edges of the slot have a thickness that is thinner than the rest of the contact heads, because a thinned area 19 is formed at the location of the slot. This characteristic is described in more detail below with reference to the manufacturing process.

Note on the blank shown in Figure 3 that the contact element of the head 10 is offset from that of the head 12. Indeed, the contact element of the head 10 is intended to be placed at a distance of the contact element of the head 12, by S-folding around two fold lines 24 (FIG. 3), so that the notches 16, the slots 18 and the holes 20 are aligned in a direction perpendicular to the contact heads , as shown clearly in FIG. 4. This spacing of the two contact elements is advantageous because it facilitates the introduction of two separate wires into the two separate contact elements. However, this spacing is limited because the further apart the contact elements are, the greater the thickness of the connector block which must contain them.

The two contact heads 10, 12 are connected to each other by a cheek 26 which is integral with the heads. The cheek is formed by folding the blank shown in FIG. 2 or in FIG. 3 around folding lines 27 which are parallel to the longitudinal direction of the contact elements. Note that the cheek has a limited length so that the two contact elements work independently.

According to a characteristic of the invention, the contact head 12 has a tongue 28 deformed so that it constitutes a projection facing the other head and preferably placed in contact with it. This projection is placed at a distance from the cheek 26 in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the contact elements and to the fold lines 27 constituting the edges of the cheek (FIG. 3).

The contact head 10 extends rearward, that is to say on the side where the projection 28 is placed, by the shank 30 which has two contact projections 32, 34. This tail, when the contact is mounted in a block of connectors, is intended to flex in the direction of arrow 35 (Figure 1). In the absence of the projection 28, the flexion would be localized at the end of the cheek 26, and more precisely at the connection of the cheek and the head 10 at the place where they are perpendicular, at the end of the play. These localized stresses could quickly cause cracking and then complete rupture of the head and cheek material. According to the invention, the projection 28 postpones the location of the bending at a distance from the end of the cheek 26, so that the material works only in bending and not in shearing. In this way, the longevity of the contact is increased.

Figure 4 shows two possible characteristics, which are also shown in Figure 1 on a smaller scale. More specifically, the reference 36 designates a second possible projection intended to determine the spacing of the heads 10 and 12 during folding and to reduce the shear forces at the other end of the cheek, that is to say the closest to the contact elements. In principle, this projection is not necessary because the contact elements of the contact heads are not normally subjected to significant forces perpendicular to their plane. However, this is an advantageous feature. Of course, the projection 36 can be offset further towards the contact elements, so that it is placed beyond the end of the cheek. This end of the cheek can also be brought closer to the other end of the cheek, so that localized shear stresses are avoided.

The second characteristic is indicated in FIG. 4 by the reference 38 which designates a projection formed by deformation of the contact head 10 and intended to allow blocking of the contact inside a body of plastic material molded from a block connectors. Of course, this member 38 for cooperation with an insulating body can have various configurations. For example, this projection 38 can be replaced by a tongue or even by two tongues preferably having opposite directions and formed on one or both of the contact heads. These tabs are then turned towards the outside of the contact heads, that is to say on the side opposite the cheek.

We now consider the method of manufacturing the contact according to the invention.

This member has however undergone the cutting of a tongue intended to form the projection 28, the cutting of the notches of the contact elements and the punching of the holes 20. Before folding the blank along the lines 24 and 27 indicated in FIG. 3 and along the fold lines of the tail 30, the slots should be formed. These slots must be cut with a determined width, for example 0.25 mm. The slots can be formed directly between the notch 16 and the hole 20. However, it can be seen in convenient that the cutting tools of such a slot wear out quickly. It is therefore desirable that the thickness of the contact is reduced at the places where a slot must be cut.

For this purpose, it is possible to envisage using the method described in the aforementioned British patent n ° 1,129,716. However, this method has a drawback because obtaining slots with parallel edges in a series of contact heads requires not only a punch of shape adapted to the relaxation of the constraints, but also a good reproducibility of these constraints. The forging operation which thins the metal then requires very precise adjustment. Consequently, the invention relates to a different method, in which the stamping which reduces the thickness of the blank material is carried out before cutting the V-shaped notch.

More specifically, FIG. 5 represents a strip 50 constituting the blank from which the contacts according to the invention are cut. As is well known in the art, pilot holes 52 are formed along the two edges of the blank, so that they allow the advance and the precise positioning of the strip. In a first stamping operation, an elongated zone 54 undergoes a reduction in thickness, for example from 0.8 mm which is the thickness of the blank to 0.6 mm, the reduction in thickness therefore being 0.2 mm . Then, a second elongated zone 56 is stamped at the place which corresponds to the subsequent formation of the slot of the other contact head. Of course, the stamped areas are wider than the slot, so that the edges of the slot formed subsequently have the aforementioned small thickness.

Then, three elongated rectangles 58 are cut from the strip 50 so that they delimit the sides of the two contact heads. For example, the central slit has a width corresponding to the width of the cheek.

Then, the V-notches, the slots and the end holes are cut as indicated by the reference 60. It should be noted that, around these cutouts identified by the reference 60, the elongate cutouts 58 have not been shown, for reasons of clarity. However, these elongated cutouts 58 exist, as indicated in the following group, placed just below in FIG. 5.

Then, the ends of the contacts are cut as indicated by the reference 62. At this time, the cutting of the contact heads is finished, the following operations being, at the bottom of FIG. 5, the cutting of the tail, its folding, folding the head, then (in operations which are not illustrated in FIG. 5) folding the contact itself and separating it from the strip.

Thus, according to the invention, the stamping which reduces the thickness of the zone in which the slot must be formed is carried out before the formation of the notches. In this way, the problem posed by the stress of the metal in the contact parts placed on either side of the notch does not pose the problem solved by the method described in the abovementioned British patent.

Although the elongated crushing area 19 has been shown on one side of the blank, this elongated area can be formed independently on either side.

There is shown the projection 28 formed by a cut tongue. This tab therefore has a certain elasticity. However, it can also be a simple deformation of one head, facing the other head. Also shown is the projection 28 formed on the head which is not extended by a tail 30. However, the projection can be formed on the contact head which comprises the tail, as long as the flexion location of the tail is transferred beyond the cheek 26, on the side opposite to that which includes the contact elements, and that the formation of the projection does not create a zone of weakness in the material.

Two contact elements 14 of the insulation displacement type are shown. Of course, this is a particularly advantageous embodiment in the case of connector blocks, but they can also be replaced by a single tail or connection tab by wire winding ("wrapper" contact).

Of course, when the two contact heads are in the form of such tails or connection tabs, it may be advantageous for the two tabs not to be superposed, that is to say are offset in a direction perpendicular to the cheek.
