Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a coupler which provides a partial sampling of microwave energy propagating in a waveguide, to a microwave circuit. More specifically, it relates to a coupler of the triplate type comprising plungers sinking into the guide.
In certain applications, it is necessary to very precisely adjust the coupling between the guide and the microwave circuit, to a predefined value. Such an application is for example an antenna with electronic scanning where there is a series of couplers supplying, from a common guide, a series of phase shifters, themselves supplying the radiating elements. The desired illumination law for the antenna leads to very precise coupling values for each of the couplers. As the coupling is given by the mechanical length of the plungers in the guide, the requirement for precision at the level of coupling results in a requirement for manufacturing precision at the level of all the parts involved.
In practice, the manufacturing tolerances are such that the law of illumination obtained is rarely satisfactory. After mounting the antenna, tests and measurements are therefore carried out allowing the development of corrected values for the length of the divers; we then disassemble the couplers, change the plungers and reassemble the couplers. The need for these various operations obviously has drawbacks, particularly in terms of the duration and cost of manufacturing, and this is all the more so since the couplers are numerous. In addition, the dismantling and reassembly operations of the coupler can cause mechanical deformation of certain parts and, consequently, introduce additional errors.
The present invention relates to a coupler of this type which is adjustable without disassembly, thus avoiding the above drawbacks. To this end, the coupler includes external means for varying the height of the central conductor of the triplate structure at the level where the plungers are fixed, thus causing a variation in the insertion of the plungers into the guide and, consequently, a variation of coupling.
More specifically, the subject of the invention is a microwave coupler as defined by claim 1.
- - la figure 1, une vue en perspective d'un coupleur connu ;
- - la figure 2, une vue en coupe d'un mode de réalisation du coupleur selon l'invention ;
- - Figure 1, a perspective view of a known coupler;
- - Figure 2, a sectional view of an embodiment of the coupler according to the invention;
- - Figures 3, a and b, a particular embodiment of the coupler according to the invention.
In these different figures, the same references relate to the same elements.
This coupler therefore comprises a central conductor, generally marked 1, located between two
As indicated previously, such a coupler can be used for example in an antenna with electronic scanning. The divers P A and P B then penetrate, over a height h, inside a microwave energy supply waveguide. On emission for example, the energy taken by these divers, which is a function of the height h, is then available on one of the terminals C or D, destined for a phase shifter, itself supplying one radiating elements of the antenna, the other terminal being isolated; the connection is made for example using coaxial conductors.
La figure 2 représente une vue en coupe, réalisée au niveau des plongeurs, d'un mode de réalisation du coupleur selon l'invention.2 shows a sectional view, taken at the level of the plungers, of an embodiment of the coupler according to the invention.
In this figure, we therefore find the central conductor 1 extending by the plungers P A and P B , and the
According to the invention, there are on the
It thus appears that means (50) external to the coupler allow the position of the central conductor 1 to be varied vertically; that of the divers P A and P B , which are integral with the latter, varies in the same way, thus varying the height h of the insertion of the divers into the guide.
The coupling produced by the coupler is thus externally adjustable.
Figures 3, a and b, show a particular embodiment of the device according to the invention, respectively seen partially in perspective and seen in section at the level of the plungers.
Cette figure sera décrite ci-après en liaison avec la figure 3b.In FIG. 3a, therefore, only the means for adjusting the distance surrounding the central conductor 1 have been shown. This figure will be described below in conjunction with FIG. 3b.
In the section of FIG. 3b, we find the
The
The operation is as follows: the rotation of the
The invention described above was, of course, by way of nonlimiting example. Thus, in particular, the variation in height of the central conductor at the level of the plungers has been described as being effected by deformation of the central conductor, but it can also be carried out by translation of this conductor. It is thus also that the three-plate coupler described is of the current type 3dB in scale, but that it can be of another type, that it comprises two plungers but that the invention applies to a coupler comprising a number any of divers. This is also how the
