Abstract

[Class 37] [Also in Group XL (b)] A transmission line 11, 12, Fig. 1, for highfrequency is coupled to a second transmission line 31, 32 so that for energy flowing from left to right an antinode is formed at B and a node at A, while for energy flowing from right to left, an antinode is formed at A and a node at B, and a meter 21 is connected to A and a terminating impedance 16 is connected to B so that the meter is affected only by the energy flowing from right to left. The meter may be graduated to read voltage or power, and the apparatus can be used to measure reflected power and thus to test matching (zero reflection). In Fig. 2, the system is reversely duplicated to measure both input and reflected power or voltage, and is further modified by replacing the probes 33, 34 of Fig. 1, spaced #/4 apart, by a conductor 1 having a length of #/2. In Fig. 3, the meter 24 measures the ratio of reflected power to input power, the conductor 13 having its end impedances matched by short-circuited stubs 22, 23, so that energy flowing from right to left energizes detector 19<SP>11</SP>, while detector 19<SP>111</SP> is energized only by 'energy in the other direction. The conductor 13 may be in line with the outer conductor 12, Fig. 4 (not shown).
