Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an openable multi-pane window construction of fire resistance Class F 60, i.e. fire-resistance grade F 60 of Swedish construction norms, the glazed framework of which includes a window frame and mutually connected window sashes, and in which construction a single pane of glass is fitted in an outer sash on the outward side of the window construction, and an innner glazing unit which comprises at least one pane of glass is fitted in an inner window sash on the inward side of the window construction.
  • fire resistance Class F 60 i.e. fire-resistance grade F 60 of Swedish construction norms
  • the invention also relates to a fixed multi-pane window construction of fire resistance Class F 60, the glazed framework of which construction includes a window frame which has a glazing unit fitted therein.
  • a known possibility of achieving long fire resistance time with building window constructions is by using preferably non-openable (so-called fixed) window constructions that are comprised of steel or some other material having high fire resistance.
  • These known window constructions are both clumsy in appearance and expensive to manufacture.
  • DE-A-2722835 describes a window construction in which the window frame and/or the window sashes consist of steel profiles.
  • the object of the present invention is primarily to provide an openable multi-pane window with which the window frame and at least the inner sash are made of wood, and which can resist a "standardized" fire for at least a period of one hour (i.e. fulfills the requirement of fire resistance Class F 60), so that the window construction will fulfill the same fire resistance requirements as those fulfilled by the walls of the building in which the window construction is installed.
  • standardized fire is meant here a carefully specified artificial fire created by means of oil burners, in an accurately specified test room in a wall of which the window construction in question is installed.
  • the artificial fire is specified primarily with regard to the rise in room temperature as a function of the time over which the fire has continued. In this regard the temperature increases by ca 550°C during the first five minutes, passes 650°C after ca 10 minutes, 700°C after ca 13 minutes, 800°C after ca 26 minutes, and 900°C after ca 50 minutes, and reaches a temperature somewhat higher than 920°C after 60 minutes.
  • a window construction of the aforedescribed kind in that the window frame and the inner sash are made of wood, there being mounted in the inner sash a metallic clamping frame in which the inner glazing unit is firmly clamped along the edges thereof through an adjustable clamping force; both the single pane of glass and a glass pane of the inner glazing unit are made of plain, heat hardened borosilicate-fire resistive glass, such as Pyran glass R ; the outer sash consists of a metal frame in spaced relationship with and located outwardly of the wooden inner sash; and the freely exposed surfaces of at least the wooden window frame and the wooden inner sash on the inward side of the construction are provided with a coating of fire resistive paint.
  • the glazing unit on the inward side of the window construction may comprise a sealed glazing unit which, in addition to the pane of borosilicate-fire resistive glass also includes a pane of conventional window glass which is located on the inward side of the unit in spaced relationship with the pane of fire resistive glass.
  • the glazing unit may include on the inward side of the construction solely a single glass pane which is made of plain, i.e. non-reinforced, heat hardened borosilicate-fire resistive glass and which is laminated with, e.g., a sheet of low emissive glass.
  • the inventive window construction is thus a multi-pane window, preferably a three-pane window, which incorporates a pane of plain, heat hardened borosilicate-fire resistive glass on both the outside of the construction and on the inside of the glazing unit.
  • the inventive window construction is also imparted fire resistive qualities by the metallic clamping frame and by the fire resistive paint applied to the wooden window frame and to the wooden inner sash on the inward side of the construction.
  • elevated temperatures for instance temperatures of 150°C-170°C
  • the fire resistive paint swells in the manner of a "soufflé" therewith forming a heat insulating layer which protects the underlying wood.
  • the fire resistive properties of the window construction can be further enhanced with the aid of fire-swelling strips and jointing compounds and non-combustible seals in the construction.
  • Such further developments of the invention are set forth in particular in claims 4 and 6.
  • a suitable construction of the metallic clamping frame is specified in particular in claims 5 and 6.
  • the window construction according to the invention can also include a wooden, intermediate sash, as set forth in claim 7.
  • the window construction may conveniently include means which provide a connection which will hold the sashes in the window frame when the normal sash retaining function of the hinges ceases. This can be achieved, for example, in accordance with the arrangements defined in Claims 8 and 10 respectively.
  • the fire resistive properties of the window construction can be further enhanced by suitable selection of material dimensions, in accordance with Claim 9.
  • the present invention affords, with the aid of simple means, window constructions of fire resistance class F 60 which exhibit extremely good properties with regard to imperviousness, k-values and mechanical strength.
  • Figs. 1-3 illustrate an openable multi-glass window construction which includes a wooden frame 2 and mutually connected window sashes which comprise an outer aluminium sash 4, a wooden intermediate sash 6 and a wooden inner sash 8.
  • the outer sash 4 comprises a framework 10 of hollow profiles having an edge flange 12 and a steel L-shaped profile 14 attached to the framework 10.
  • a single pane of Pyran glass 16 is fitted between the flange 12 and the profile 14.
  • a sealed glazing unit 18 is inserted in a channel located at the edge surface of the inner sash 8 and the intermediate sash 6 screwed firmly thereto, the edge portions of which unit are clamped firmly in a metallic mounting frame 20 through the medium of adjustable clamping forces, the frame being screwed firmly to the inner sash in said channel.
  • the sealed glazing unit 18 comprises a pane 22 of Pyran glass and a pane 24 of conventional window glass in spaced relationship with the pane 22.
  • Located between the framework 10 and the intermediate sash 6 is a dust filter strip 26, while a spacer in the from of an inwardly open profile 28 is located between the glass panes 22 and 24.
  • the Pyran glass pane 16 and the sealed glazing unit 18 are held clamped with the aid of inserts 30 in the form a ceramic fibre strips.
  • Seals in the form of hose strips 32 are provided between the inner sash and the window frame 2, and a fire-swelling strip 36 is located in a groove 34 provided in the inner sash 8.
  • a similar fire-swelling strip 38 is also located at the outer edge of the sealed glazing unit 18.
  • Silicone rubber top seals 40 are provided on both sides of the sealed glazing unit 18.
  • the sash assembly comprising the inner sash 8, the intermediate sash 6 and the outer sash 4 hinged thereto is attached to the window frame 2 by means of hinge devices 42.
  • All of the freely exposed surfaces of the intermediate sash, the inner sash and window frame are provided with a coating 44 of fire resistive paint. These coatings 44 are preferably applied to a "surface weight" of ca 500 g/m2 and are indicated in Fig. 3 by broken lines immediately inwards of respective surfaces of the intermediate sash 6, the inner sash 8 and the frame 2.
  • the metallic clamping frame 20 (in which the sealed glazing unit 18 is pressure fitted) comprises a U-shaped profile 46 which is firmly mounted in recesses or rebates on the top rail, the bottom rail and the stiles of the inner sash 8, and an L-shaped profile 50 which has one arm or flange 48 thereof positioned within the associated U-shaped profile, such that the L-shaped profile can be pressed against the edge portion of the sealed glazing unit 18.
  • the rebates in the aforesaid rails and stiles of the sash have planar bottom surfaces which extend perpendicularly to the plane of the sealed glazing unit 18, and the edge part of the unit can be clamped between one side flange 52 of the U-shaped profiles and the flange 48 of the L-shaped profiles 50 extending parallel therewith, by tightening clamping or pressure means 54 acting between the U-shaped and L-shaped profiles.
  • These clamping means may conveniently have the form of stop screws 51, which are provided with hexagonal holes and screwed through the side flange 56 of the profile 46 and which are tightened against the flange 48 to a given pressure, with the aid of a torque spanner.
  • the clamping frame 20 is held firmly to the inner sash 8 by means of screws 58 which pass through the L-shaped profiles 50.
  • the edge surface of the sealed glazing unit 18 supports against an oak glazing block 60 which has a recess provided in the undersurface thereof for accommodating the fire-swelling strip 38.
  • safety devices 62 are mounted on the metallic outer sash 4, within the edge region thereof at which the sash adjoins the window frame jamb in which the hinge devices 42 are fitted.
  • the window frame jamb has provided therein retention cut-outs or recesses into which hook-shaped retention projections 66 of the safety devices 62 engage.
  • the projection 66 and the recesses 64 thus form connection means which hold the sashes firmly in the window frame 2 when the normal sash retaining function of the hinge devices 42 has ceased.
  • At least one such safety device 62 is provided at the top and at the bottom of the edge region of the outer sash 4, wherewith the hooked projections 66 of the safety devices may conveniently be arranged to project into recesses 64 forming part of a common groove in the window frame, such as a conventional turbulence groove in the window frame.
  • the safety devices 62 are suitably comprised of a Z-shaped extruded aluminium profile.
  • FIGs. 5 and 6 illustrate a fixed fire resistant window which is constructed according to the same principles as the 3-pane fire resistant window illustrated in Figs. 1-4 and which comprises mutually connected window sashes and a 2-pane sealed glazing unit.
  • the glazed framework of the fixed multi-pane window construction includes a window frame 2′ in which there is firmly fitted a glazing unit 68.
