Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a frame construction essentially, but not exclusively for windows, and in particular to frame parts made as extrusion members.
  • a known window frame construction is formed by a plurality of elongate extrusion members typically alloy, for say top, bottom and two sides (minimum of four), which are fitted within an aperture in a framework, door or other support means.
  • Each extrusion member has a generally J-shaped cross-section, with the stem of the extrusion provided with holes for securing it by means of screws or the like to the support means.
  • an elongate locating bead is provided which serves to hold the glass in place within the frame. The locating bead engages with the turned in J-end of the extrusion member to press the glass towards one half of the head of the extrusion member. The other half of the head is normally positioned up to support means, usually on the internal side.
  • the described frame construction suffers from the disadvantage that fixing in position is time consuming by the need to fix screws in position, and the resulting fixing, in a forced entry situation, can break away relatively easily.
  • a frame construction for holding glass or other panelling in a support structure comprising first and second elongate extrusion members to locate the members relative to one another about support means for the frame with a respective rim part of each member disposed adjacent opposite sides of the support means.
  • the keying means comprises barb like projections and recesses on the two members with inclined teeth arranged to slip over one another on assembly as the two members are slid towards one another, yet keying with one another to prevent movement apart of the two members at least in one plane, the two members overlap one another to provide the keying means.
  • the members have a respective flange part extending generally normal to the plane of the of the window or panelling, which parts overlap to a lesser or greater extent on assembly depending on the thickness of the support, (door panel etc.) to which the window/panelling is to be fitted.
  • Said flange parts carry the keying means.
  • one of the extrusion members is generally of J-shaped cross-section, with the stem carrying the keying means in the form of teeth on the side opposite to the direction of the in turned J-end, whilst the other extrusion member is of generally L-shaped cross-section.
  • the L-shaped extrusion member is fitted closest to the support means, with the stem of the other member overlying it.
  • Figure 1 shows a section through one side of a window frame construction.
  • the support means is shown at 1. This may be a door panel with an opening in it to be fitted with the window, a frame member of stud wall partitioning, or even masonry.
  • one extrusion member 3 is of simple L-shaped cross-section although more complicated sections may be utilised providing they have a rim part 5, and a flange part 7.
  • the L-shape embraces an edge of the support means, with the rim part 5 positioned up to a surface of the support and the flange part 7 against the boundary of the aperture to which the frame is fitted, or some packing means therebetween for spacing purposes.
  • the other member 9 is of generally J-shaped construction, being more complicated to facilitate window pane placement and retention. It provides a rim part 11 which is positioned up to an opposite surface of the support means, i.e. on an opposite side thereof to the rim part 5.
  • the stem of the J-shape constitutes a flange part 13, which is positioned overlying the flange part 7.
  • a window pane shown dotted at 19, is held in position against the abutment 15 by a locating bead 21, which is in the form of an elongate extrusion, which engages with the lip 17.
  • Each of the extrusion members 3, 9 has mutually engagable keying means, which take the form of teeth 23 shown in larger detail in Figure 2, the encircled part A of Figure 1.
  • the teeth have inclined parts 25 and shoulders 27.
  • the shape of the teeth is such as to allow relative movement between the members in the direction of the arrows B, but to prevent movement in the opposite direction.
  • the stem part 13 has teeth substantially along its entire width as shown, whilst the flange part 7 has teeth principally at the end thereof (say four teeth). This is to allow various thicknesses of door panel etc. to be accommodated. Teeth of 1 mm height and a pitch of 2 mm are considered satisfactory.
  • the frame construction is held securely in position in the aperture in the support means, because, the extrusion member 3 is held against the support means and the extrusion member 9 is held against the member 3.
  • the keying means is effective to prevent outward displacement of both members, i.e. away from the position embracing the support means.
  • the window pane is held in place by positioning the locating bead 21 so that it engages between the turned in J end 17 and the window pane 19. Screws are used to locate the bead securely in position, with the screws passing through the extrusion member and into the support means.
  • fixing means may be employed, for example screw means passing through holes, in one or both of the flange parts 7, 13, see dotted outline of hole at 29.
