Definitions
- the present invention relates to a diaphragm for a beam of electromagnetic radiation and its use in a device for collimating this beam.
- the diaphragms or irises of electromagnetic radiation collimators are produced according to the principle of the diaphragm of the photographic camera, where the beam-limiting agent is arranged in articulated plates which, moving, delimit an area of the passage of the beam, which has, roughly, the shape of a disc.
- the shape of these plates is very precise and depends on the desired variation on the passage section, which leads, for a large range of variation of the section, to use large rigid plates, and to a significant bulk.
- the corollary of this geometric constraint is the difficulty of obtaining small sections.
- the mechanical tolerances must remain very low.
- the object of the invention is to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks.
- the subject of the invention is a diaphragm for an electromagnetic radiation beam comprising an enclosure transparent to radiation in which a deformable material attenuating the radiation beam circulates, characterized in that the enclosure comprises a network of pipes connected together consecutively and placed in a plane perpendicular to the radiation beam to allow the attenuating material to be introduced from outside the enclosure and to surround, inside the enclosure, by passing through these pipes, the area beam passage so that the area of the passage area varies continuously with the volume of the material present in the enclosure.
- FIGS. 1A and 1B A diaphragm for a beam of electromagnetic radiation according to the invention is shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B. It consists of an enclosure 1 in which circulates a deformable material 2, fluid or solid, opaque to the radiation beam, guided in two pipes 3 and 4 in the form of spirals. This diaphragm is shown placed in front of a source of electromagnetic radiation 5 emitting towards the diaphragm a beam of radiation 6.
- the material 2 is introduced continuously by ends 7 and 8 of the pipes situated at the periphery of the spirals, it is pushed or pulled inside these in the direction of their center 9. In this way, the path of the material 2 in the pipes 3 and 4 continuously surrounds a passage section 10 of the beam 6 through the diaphragm which is thus formed.
- the section 10 can thus vary continuously with the volume of the material 2 present in each line 3 and 4 from the periphery of the diaphragm where the ends 7 and 8 of the lines 3 and 4 are located up to the center 9 of the two spirals.
- the material 2 can be made, for radiodiagnostic applications, in particular by mercury or also by a steel cable or rope.
- the two spirals can advantageously be juxtaposed and offset relative to each other as shown in the sectional view of FIG. 1B where the turns formed by the pipe 3 mask the radiation passing through the space between the turns of the pipe 4.
- the walls of the pipes must be formed by a material which is itself transparent to this radiation.
- the material 2 is a solid, and is constituted for example by a steel cable
- one end of the steel cable can be fixed to any known actuation means, not shown, capable of pushing or pulling the cable inside pipes 3 and 4.
- the actuating means must make it possible to continuously suction or discharge the fluid in the pipes 3 and 4 to allow the adjustment of the passage section 10 radiation.
- actuating means are constituted in FIG. 2, by a suction and discharge pump 11 coupled between the ends 7 and 8 of the pipes 3 and 4 and by a fluid supply tank 12, the pump 11 being actuated by electrical control means 13.
- the central outlets of the spirals may be either closed, the mercury remaining in contact with the vacuum or with an inert gas under low pressure, or open, to possibly ensure the circulation of '' a fluid transparent to radiation whose optical index is adapted to that of the structure which contains it.
- the device of FIG. 2, as well as the central part 9 of the diaphragm can be modified according to the examples shown in FIGS. 3 to 7 where elements similar to those of FIGS. 1A, 1B and 2 have been represented with the same references.
- the supply of a spiral with opaque fluid contained in the reservoir 12 is carried out by the pump 11 placed at one end 7 or 8 of a pipe and the supply with transparent fluid contained in a reservoir 14 is produced by a pump 15 coupled to the pipe at the center 9 of the spiral.
- the pumps 11 and 15 in turn push the opaque fluid or the transparent fluid to the end of the pipe to which they are connected.
- a single suction and discharge pump 11 is coupled in a closed circuit between an opaque fluid reservoir 12 and a transparent fluid reservoir 14, both being in communication with one end 7 or 8 of a pipe. , the other, with the other end of the pipe located at the center 9 of the spiral.
- the device of FIG. 4 represented in FIG. 5 the two reservoirs 12 and 14 are combined in a single mixed reservoir 16.
- FIGS. 6 and 7 Rather than having the reservoirs outside the diaphragm, another solution which is represented in FIGS. 6 and 7 consists in providing directly at the center 9 at the outlet of a spiral a reservoir 17 in communication directly with this outlet and transparent to the beam. of radiation.
- the reservoir 17 which is attached to the turns of the diaphragm may contain advantageously the alcohol which is the fluid transparent to radiation and in this case the pump 11 can operate in a closed circuit between the mercury supply reservoir 12 and the alcohol reservoir 17 directly attached to the diaphragm.
- the transparent liquid may be reduced to the state of a plug 18 located at the front of the column the opaque liquid moving with it, the aim of this alcohol stopper is to avoid the oxidation which produces the aging of mercury and the release of harmful mercury vapor.
- the diaphragm according to the invention is also not limited to the shape of the pipes which have just been described, in fact, the pipes 3 and 4 instead of being wound in the manner of a spiral, can be folded several times at right angles in the same direction to form contiguous rectangular turns in the same plane as shown in Figure 9, and obtain a rectangular diaphragm.
- each diaphragm can be mounted juxtaposed to one another as shown in FIG. 10, each diaphragm being connected to a pumping device, of the type described above, which makes it possible to carry out collimations without distinction.
- a pumping device of the type described above, which makes it possible to carry out collimations without distinction.
- the enclosure may include a honeycomb structure supplied at its periphery with mercury and at its center with alcohol.
- the enclosure is constituted by a cylindrical partition 19 which encloses a space comprised between two parallel flat plates 20 and 21.
- the space between the two plates 20 and 21 is compartmentalized by partitions 22 delimiting on each of the plates circular sectors regularly distributed around the center of the plates 20 and 21.
- a hole 23 has been drilled in the center of the plate 21 puts the enclosure in communication with an alcohol reservoir 23 b attached to the plate 21.
- the mercury is brought to the periphery of the enclosure by a nozzle 24 passing through the cylindrical partition 19.
- the partitions 22 are separated from the partition 19 by a space sufficient to allow the mercury to enter each of the spaces delimited by the partitions 22.
- FIG. 14 An adaptation of a diaphragm according to the invention to an X-ray collimating device for a radiodiagnostic device is shown in FIG. 14.
- the collimation device comprises, in a known manner, various opaque X-ray plates not referenced, performing collimation in a rectangular format of an X-ray beam from a focus 24 to adapt this beam to the shapes of the rectangular detectors. (films) or organs of irradiated patients.
- a fluid iris diaphragm 25 collimates the X-ray beam emitted by the focal point 25 in a circular shape adapting the X-ray beam to the shapes of the detectors of the apparatuses and in particular to those of the image intensifiers or to those of organs to be irradiated.
- a light beam 26 emitted by a source 27 through a semi-transparent plate 28 makes it possible to illuminate the diaphragm 25 with the geometry that the beam of X-rays emitted by the source 24 to center the object to be examined in the beam , in this setting the transparency of the alcohol and the non-transparency of the mercury allow the collimation of the light beam by the diaphragm 25.
- the low mass set in motion allows rapid dynamics to adapt the size of the beam to the size of an object 29 to be examined.
- an X-ray tube of which two focal points F1 and F2 are separated it is possible to use, as shown in FIG. 15, an X-ray tube of which two focal points F1 and F2 are separated.
- the taking of photographs 30 is carried out alternately on one and the other focal point, but a limitation of the rate of acquisition may arise inter alia from the setting in motion due to the inertia of the collimation means 25 which have to get move from one beam to another in synchronism with the emission of X-rays.
- a solution shown in Figure 16 allows by controlling either a P1 pump or a P2 pump to adjust the collimation of an X-ray beam by a diaphragm 25 to the dimension of the object examined. Then by controlling the two pumps P1 and P2 at the same time in one direction then in the other, to follow the beam of X-rays coming from the focus F1 then from the focus F2.

Description
- les figures 1A et 1B des représentations d'un diaphragme respectivement en vue de face et en coupe, formé par deux canalisations en spirale juxtaposées ;

- la figure 10 un mode d'assemblage de plusieurs diaphragmes selon l'invention pour collimater un faisceau à haute énergie ;
- les figures 11 et 12 d'autres modes de réalisation de diaphragmes rectangulaires ;

- la figure 14 une adaptation d'un diaphragme selon l'invention à un dispositif de collimation de rayons X ;
- la figure 15 un exemple d'application du diaphragme selon l'invention à l'acquisition d'images stéréoscopiques ;
