Abstract

An electric curling iron has a handle and unitary curling structure with first and second elongated generally aligned oppositely extending shell sections aligned oppositely extending shell section. Each section is provided with a separate PTC resistance heating element and the two shell sections have different diameters and/or different bristles and/or at least one hair clamping arm. The handle is adapted to be selectively slipped onto either of the two shell sections, whereby at the same time an electrical connection is established between the heating element in the other shell section and an electrical power supply on the handle.

Description

The invention relates to an electrically heatable curling iron according to the preamble of claims 1 and 2.

From DE-OS 35 03 845 an electrically heatable curling iron with a heating device and a handle is already known, in which the handle has a mains connection and a detachable mechanical and electrical connection is provided between the curling iron and the handle. Different curling irons can be placed on the handle for different user needs. Because each curling iron contains its own heating element, individual heating of each curling iron is possible via the electrical connection between the handle and the curling iron. However, the fact that the unused, unused curling irons have to be stored in some way and, moreover, take up some space, especially when using this curling iron when traveling, has a disruptive effect on the user. Another disadvantage for the user arises from the relatively high manufacturing and packaging costs of such a curling iron. The special design of the electrical contacts in the handle of the curling iron according to FIG. 1 of this prior art may also be manageable for rechargeable battery devices, but cannot be used for curling irons which are at least partially operated directly on the public electrical network for safety reasons.

Another alternative of adapting curling irons to different application needs of one or more users is to use different attachments for a curling iron to be provided, which can be pushed onto these. Such a curling iron is known for example from US-A-39 18 465. For such curling irons, however, there is generally the problem that the heat transfer between the heating element in the curling irons and the various attachments which can be pushed on cannot generally be optimized for each attachment and thus the temperature of the attachments does not correspond to the ideal temperatures required for a hair treatment . In addition, in this variant of adaptable curling irons there are several separate parts to be kept with the associated disadvantages for the user.

Finally, a hair curler is known from US-A 35 83 409, the diameter of which is continuously variable. Such a hair curler may meet the various application needs, but has a very complex and therefore expensive to manufacture. Moreover, the transfer of this principle to electrically heatable curling irons presents difficulties insofar as the heating device can only be accommodated in this hair curler with complex means.

The invention has for its object to develop an electrically operated curling iron in such a way that it meets the individual needs of the user and is easy and safe to handle or store. Furthermore, this curling iron should have a compact design and be able to be offered on the market at prices which are acceptable to the user. This object is achieved by an electrically operated curling iron with the features of claim 1 and claim 2.

A curling iron with the features of claim 1 is particularly advantageous because the two housing parts of the curling iron can be heated individually by the at least two heating elements are such that the heating power and the heat transfer can be adapted to the corresponding design of the two sides of the curling iron. The fact that the handle holds a part of the curling iron in its interior ensures an extremely compact design without the user having to worry about the storage of loose parts. At the same time, only the heating element of the part of the curling iron protruding from the handle is connected to the mains connection and supplied with electrical energy, so that this curling iron is particularly easy and safe to handle.

The advantageous embodiment of an electric curling iron according to claim 2 provides a very compact curling iron which, due to the different design of the two housing parts, meets the individual wishes of the user. The fact that the handle can be mechanically and electrically connected to the curling iron on both sides ensures simple and safe handling and storage of the curling iron with a compact and inexpensive construction. Further advantageous developments of the two housing parts of the curling iron are specified in claims 3 to 7, individual combinations having particular advantages. If both parts of the curling iron are provided with bristles, with only the diameters of the curling irons differing, the user has the possibility of producing different sizes and different firmness of the curls. In particular, a design of the curling iron part with the smaller diameter as a micro curling iron for special hairstyles, for example short hair, has proven to be advantageous. Users who prefer the hair clip version will use a bristle-free curling iron, the housing parts of which have different diameters and are each provided with a hair clip. In addition, for this version, an additional push-on bristle part can be provided, which can also be accommodated in the handle when not in use. For users who prefer to produce their curls alternatively with the bristle version or the hair clip version, a curling iron, one part of which is equipped with bristles and the other part of which is provided with a hair clip, is advantageously used. Both parts of the curling iron can have the same or different diameters. If the part of the curling iron equipped with a hair holding clip has a smaller diameter than the bristled part of the curling iron, this combination is particularly advantageous for users whose hair is too short in certain head areas for styling with the bristle part. If the reverse is the case, namely that the bristled part of the curling iron has the smaller diameter, this combination is preferred by a user who normally uses curling irons provided with hair holding clips, when a part of the curls has a small diameter and / or should be turned very tight. Other possible combinations that are not expressly mentioned here are possible and can be offered on the market without problems according to the special wishes of the users.

Another advantage of the curling iron with the features of claim 2, in particular in conjunction with the features of claims 3 to 7, is that only a single electric heating element for heating both sides of the curling iron can be provided by appropriate arrangement of the heat conducting plates surrounding the heating element. By means of a positioning of the heating element attached between the heat-conducting plates, which is matched to the individual case, a temperature distribution can be achieved over the entire length of the curling iron, which is tailored to the special design of the two parts of the curling iron. An arrangement of the contacts of the heating elements in the The middle area of the two head ends of each curling iron part, which can be connected to the contacts connected to the power plug in a bottom area facing away from the curling iron inside the handle by joining the curling iron and the handle, makes the handling of the curling iron very safe since the live parts are not user-friendly are directly accessible. A, arranged in a cup-shaped recess at the two ends of the curling iron, displaceable against a spring force, protects the connecting contacts of each part of the curling iron against dirt which protrudes from the handle and is in use. Because the heating element of one part of the curling iron is in electrical connection with the connection contacts at the head end of the other part of the curling iron, the contacts of the curling iron which are accessible to the user are in each case de-energized or voltage-free, so that there is no danger to the user. In a further embodiment of the curling iron according to the invention, the electrical connection contacts in the central region of the curling iron are arranged eccentrically relative to the longitudinal axis and can be connected to corresponding contacts connected to the mains connection and arranged in the end of the handle facing the curling iron. This results in the advantages of simple assembly and thus less expensive production, and the lack of contact openings at the two ends of the curling iron, which largely prevents contamination of the contacts. The formation of the electrical connection between the heating element and the contacts, as well as the contacts and a rotary coupling as webs made of conductive material, and the embedding of these webs in an insulated carrier part, ensures particularly cost-effective production and safe operating behavior of the curling iron. This is particularly advantageous for handling the curling iron according to the invention, in particular in the embodiment with two hair holding clips The fact that these hair holding clips can be actuated separately by means of a single operating element in the center area of the curling iron. Further advantages of the invention emerge from the subclaims and from the description of the exemplary embodiments in conjunction with the drawing.

In Figure 1, a first embodiment of an electrically operated curling iron is shown, in which a handle is designated by the reference number 10. In a bottom region 11 of the handle 10, a rotary coupling 12 is arranged, which is connected on the one hand to a mains connection 13 and on the other hand via contacts 14 to contacts 15. A support plate 16 arranged in the base region 11 serves to fix the contact springs 14 and contacts 15. The reference number 20 denotes a curling iron, which essentially consists of a first housing part 21 and a second housing part 22, which are firmly connected to one another. The internal structure of the two housing parts 21, 22 of the curling iron 20 is basically the same, so that this can only be explained with reference to the second housing part 22. A heating element 23, in particular a PTC resistor, is arranged in the interior of the housing part 22 between heat-conducting plates 24, which are fixed, for example, in a force-fitting or positive manner in the interior of the second housing part 22. Electrical connections 25 lead from the heating element 23 out of the heat-conducting sheets 24 through the first housing part 21 to the head end 27 of this housing part 21 and are connected to contacts 26 at the head end 27. The contacts 15 and 26 are designed to match one another, for example as a socket and plug pin.

In a similar manner, a heating element, which is arranged between heat conducting plates and from which electrical connections 28 lead to contacts 30 at the head end 29 of the second housing part 22, is also accommodated in the first housing part 21. Both housing parts 21, 22 of the curling iron 20 have a bristle 31 and different diameters D₁, D₂ in the present embodiment. The curling iron is inserted with its first housing part 21 into the handle 10, so that the contacts 15 and 26 are in conductive connection with one another and thus supplies the heating element 23 in the second housing part 22 with electrical energy becomes. As examples of fastening means between the curling iron 20 and the handle 10, two variants are shown in the figure, which can be used alternatively. 32 with a locking button on the curling iron 20 is designated, which snaps into the handle 10 when the curling iron 20 is inserted into a bore 34 of the handle 10. Another possibility is to provide the handle 10 with locking lugs 33 which grip a shape 35 on the central part of the curling iron 20 in a spring-elastic manner.

According to the present illustration, the second housing part 22 of the curling iron 20 with the diameter D 2 is used. If the user would like to bring the first housing part 21 with the diameter D 1 to use, he only has to release the curling iron 20 from the handle 10 either by pressing the locking button 32 or by pulling lightly on the unheated, cool head end 29 and the second housing part 22 to push the curling iron 20 into the handle 10. Via the contacts 15 and 30 and the electrical connection 28 to the heating element, not shown in the drawing, of the first housing part 21, the latter is heated and can be used by the user after a short time. As will be shown in more detail, the two housing parts 21, 22 of the curling iron 20 can be designed completely different. The configuration according to FIG. 1 is only one of many variants. According to the different embodiments of the two housing parts 21, 22, the two heating elements must be dimensioned. This ensures that the curling iron 20 has an optimal temperature behavior in each embodiment. Because the contacts 26 and 30 exposed at the head end 27 and 29 of the respectively used housing part 21 and 22 are not live, safe handling for the user is ensured.

29 des Lockenstabes 20.In Figure 3, an advantageous embodiment of the head ends 27, 29 of the curling iron 20 is shown. Parts identical to FIG. 1 have the same reference numbers. The curling iron 20 has a pot-like recess at the head end 21 or 29, which is closed off by a base plate 40. The two contacts 26, which are designed as pins, are fastened in the base plate 40, from which the electrical lines 25 to the heating element 23 located in the other housing part 22 extend. The contacts 26 engage in contacts 15 designed as sockets, which are fastened to the bottom of the carrier plate 16 of the handle 10. From the spring elements 41 arranged in the sockets, which establish an electrical connection to the contacts 26 of the curling iron 20, contact springs 14 lead to the rotary coupling 12. In the pot-like recess there is a part 42 designed as a cover, which is displaceably mounted on the contacts 26 and which only has two openings for the passage of the contacts 26. If the curling iron 20 is detached from the handle 10, the cover 42 is pushed over the contacts 26 by means of at least one spring 43, so that these disappear in the pot-like recess under the cover 42. In this position, the cover 42 is fixed by means of a holding or guiding device or is prevented from slipping out of the pot-like recess. For example, lugs 45 attached to the cover are to be provided, which engage in grooves 46 arranged in the side wall region of the pot-like recess. This covering of the contacts 26 of the housing part of the curling iron 20 which is currently in use and protrudes from the handle 10 prevents contamination of the contacts in a particularly advantageous manner, so that even after prolonged use of the curling iron, a perfect electrical connection between the contacts 26 and 30 and the contacts 15 is present. When inserting the Curling iron 20 in the handle 10, the cover is pushed through the contacts 15 located on the carrier plate, designed as bushings, against the force of the spring or springs 43 in the direction of the base plate 40, so that the contacts 26 are exposed. For this purpose, a formation 44 is provided in which the contacts 15 or the spring elements 41 are received and which has an outer diameter which is at least slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the cup-shaped recess at the head end 27 or 29 of the curling iron 20.

Die Kontakte 26, 30 sind zur Verstärkung im Bereich der Ausnehmungen 55 doppellagig ausgebildet.FIG. 2 shows a further embodiment of an electric curling iron, which differs from the embodiment of FIG. 1 in particular in the arrangement of the contacts. The same parts are again identified by the same reference numbers. The second housing part 22 of the curling iron 20 is drawn somewhat shortened for reasons of illustration. In this case, the two housing parts 21, 22 have the same diameter, but differ in that the first housing part 21 has a bristle 31, the second housing part 22 has a hair clip, not shown in the drawing. Starting from contact surfaces 53 of the rotary coupling 12, the contact springs 14 lead in one piece into an edge region 54 at the open end of the handle 10. They are guided and insulated in a carrier part 51 which is fixed to the inner wall of the handle 10. In the edge area 54 of the handle 10, the contact springs 14 are slightly angled and act as elastic contacts 15. In a coupling piece 52 connecting the two housing parts 21, 22 of the curling iron 20, the contacts 26 originating from the heating element 23 and a heating element 50 of the first housing part and 30 arranged in recesses 55. The recesses 55 are adapted in its generatrix to the cross section of the carrier part 51 in order to be able to accommodate this. The contacts 26 and 30 extend in one piece to the corresponding heating elements 23, 50 and are clamped between them and the heat conducting plates 24. If the curling iron 20, for example as shown in FIG. 2a, is pushed with its first housing part 21 into the handle 10, then the contacts 26, which are connected to the heating element 23, penetrate through a bore or opening 56 into the carrier part 51 and slide under the angled elastic contacts 15, so that an electrically conductive connection between the heating element 23 and the rotary coupling 12 is formed. The contacts 26, 30 are double-layered for reinforcement in the area of the recesses 55.

If the first housing part 21 of the curling iron 20 is to be used, the curling iron 20 must be pulled out of the handle 10 at the head end 29 and pushed into the handle 10 with the second housing part 22, so that the contacts 30 with the contacts 15 of the carrier part 51 get in touch. After a short heating-up time, the housing part 21 of the curling iron 20 with the bristle 31 is to be used according to the present exemplary embodiment. FIG. 2b shows a top view of the curling iron 20 and the handle 10 from an X direction indicated in FIG. 2a. The broken line 57 shows an opening of the second housing part 22 of the curling iron 20, so that in addition to the heating element 23, the contacts 26, the carrier part 51 is also visible. The heat-conducting sheets 24 which surround the heating element 23 are indicated by dashed lines.

Particularly advantageous in this embodiment is the quite simple assembly of the entire arrangement, which leads to a less expensive manufacture of the curling iron, and the fact that there are no contact openings in the head ends 29 and 27 and therefore contamination is largely excluded.

Figure 4 shows different basic variants of the curling iron 20. In Figure 4a, the two housing parts 21, 22 of the curling iron 20 have different diameters D₁, D₂, both housing parts 21, 22 are each provided with a hair clip 60 and both hair clips 60 by a single control element 61, which is arranged on the coupling piece 52, can be actuated. This embodiment is particularly preferred by those users who are used to using curling irons with hair clips. The design allows the user to form curls with different diameters or with different strength. The housing part 21 with the smaller diameter D 1 can also advantageously be designed as a micro curling iron, the dimensioning of the heating element being designed for a very rapid heating-up time. In addition, for some applications it is desirable to provide push-on brush attachments for the curling iron 20 of FIG. 4a. As a result, the curling iron 20 is adapted even more to the individual needs of the respective user or users. The push-on bristle attachments, not shown in the drawing, are dimensioned with respect to the opening width of the handle 10 such that they can also be accommodated in the handle 10 in the pushed-on state. Because these additional parts do not require any additional storage space when the curling iron is not in use, the advantages such as compactness, transport and ease of use are retained in full.

Figure 4b also shows a curling iron 20, the two housing parts 21, 22 have different diameters D₁, D₂. However, both housing parts 21, 22 are provided with bristles 31. This embodiment is used by users who normally prefer a bristled curling iron. With the same curling iron, curls with different diameters and / or different strengths can be formed. An embodiment of one of the housing parts 21, 22 as a micro curling iron with the necessary dimensioning of the associated heating element is another, possibly advantageous embodiment variant.

Finally, a curling iron 20 is shown in FIG. 4c, the first housing part 21 of which has the smaller diameter D 1 and a hair holding clip 60 with the associated operating element 61. The second housing part 22 with the larger diameter D₂, however, is provided with a bristle 31. This version is intended for users who usually work with a bristled curling iron of a conventional type. In addition, the first housing part 21 can also be used to treat hairstyles in which the hair is at least partially too short for conventional curling brush versions. In addition, by using a brush attachment that can be pushed onto the first housing part 21, this curling iron offers further possibilities to meet the special wishes of the user. For users who usually use curling irons with hair holding clips, an embodiment is to be provided in which the housing part with the smaller diameter has a bristle 31 and the housing part with the larger diameter has a hair holding clip 60.

For special applications, an embodiment is advantageous in which both housing parts 21, 22 have the same diameter but different bristles 31 or a combination of hair holding clip 60 / bristles 31.

Figure 4d shows a schematic representation of the handling of the curling iron according to the invention. The handle 10 can be pushed onto the first housing part 21 of the curling iron 20, so that the second housing part 22, which has a bristle 31 in the present exemplary embodiment, is used. The same handle 10 is shown in dashed lines in a second position in which it is pushed over the second housing part 22 onto the curling iron 20. In this case, the first housing part 21 with the hair holding clip 60 is used.

In addition to the above-mentioned exemplary embodiments, in which a heating element 23, 50 of each individual housing part 21, 22 is regularly provided for optimal temperature design, the use of a single heating element for both housing parts 21, 22 has proven to be useful at least in some applications. The heat conducting plates 24 penetrate the entire curling iron 20, that is to say also the area of the coupling piece 52. In this case, the temperatures of the two housing parts 21, 22 can be matched by a corresponding, for example asymmetrical positioning of the one heating element in the curling iron 20. In addition, additional heat insulation must be provided in the interior of the handle 10 for such an embodiment. The manufacturing costs of the curling iron described can be further reduced by this embodiment variant.

In a longitudinal section through the curling iron 20 according to FIG. 4 a, the two different-diameter housing parts 21, 22 are indicated, which are connected to one another via the coupling piece 52 are connected. The two hair clips 60 are rotatably supported on axes of rotation 70 in the edge regions 71 of the coupling piece. The one hair clip 60 has a recess 72 in the area between the axes of rotation 70, so that two finger-like extensions 73 extend on the two long sides of the clip 60. The other hair holding clip 60 tapers in the area between the two axes of rotation 70 on both sides in such a manner that an extension 74 engages between the two finger-like extensions 73. Beneath these extensions 73, 74, that is to say in the interior of the curling iron 20, there is an elastic element 75, in particular a spiral spring or the like, which presses the hair-holding clips 60 in their rest position I against the two housing parts 21, 22 of the curling iron 20. On the side of the extensions 73, 74 facing away from the elastic element, a switch button 76 is arranged, which on its underside has tabs 77 opposite one another at the edge regions. On the side of the switching button 76 pointing toward the housing part 21, two lugs 77 are arranged, which correspond to engagement surfaces 78 at the ends of the two finger-like extensions 73 of the one hair holding clip 60. On the side of the switch button 76 opposite these two lugs 77, a further lug 77 is arranged, which corresponds to the point of application 78 at the end of the extension 74 of the other hair holding clip 60. By actuating the switch button which can be tilted on both sides with respect to the head ends 27, 29 of the curling iron 20 Depending on the tilting movement, the two noses 77, corresponding to the extensions 73, act once on the hair-holding clip 60 belonging to the second housing part 22 in order to lift it off the second housing part 22 against the spring force of the elastic element 75. A tilting movement of the switch button 76 in the other direction lifts the hair holding clip 60 belonging to the first housing part 21 away from the first housing part 21 via the force of the one nose 77 on the extension 74.

Compression of the elastic element 75 during the manipulation of the switch button 76 in one or the other tilting direction can result in the other hair holding clip 60, which should remain in its rest position, getting a slight play and tending to lift something off the corresponding housing part . This behavior of the hair clip not to be actuated when the other is actuated is counteracted by the fact that in the interior of the handle 10 there are provided moldings which fix the hair clip 60 of the housing part 21, 22 inserted into the handle 10 on the associated housing part. Since the curling iron 20 is only functional when the handle 10 is pushed on, the hair clip 60 not to be actuated is always secured against even slight lifting off when the other hair clip is actuated. It can be seen from FIG. 5c that the extensions 73, 74 have an approximately U-shaped profile, so that sufficient rigidity of the lever arms of the hair holding clips 60 is ensured. This configuration of the operating element 61 as just a single switch button 76 for, in particular, two hair holding clips 60 of the curling iron 20 has a high level of user-friendliness and a very compact design which advantageously accommodates the handling of the curling iron.

Further developments of this and the other exemplary embodiments for a curling iron 20 which can be used on both sides are part of the disclosed and do not lead out of the scope of the invention.
