Definitions

  • Ceramic monoliths require secure and shock-absorbing fastening because of their risk of breakage under extreme operating conditions (vibrations, pressure surges, temperature changes). Since they cannot be produced in any size, there is still the need to combine several elements in one battery in order to e.g. to be able to enforce large gas volumes flowing from power plant exhaust gases per unit of time.
  • this disadvantage is eliminated by a device for holding quadrangular monolithic ceramic catalyst elements used for exhaust gas aftertreatment of combustion systems and for combining them into a package.
  • This device is provided with an elastic buffer sleeve corresponding to the outer shape of the catalyst element and positively slidable onto this and a metal frame corresponding to the outer shape of the catalyst element and buffer sleeve, encompassing the buffer sleeve, the internal free cross section of which is larger than the end face of the catalyst element and smaller than the sum the end faces of the catalyst element and the buffer sleeve or equal to the sum of these end faces.
  • the buffer sleeve can e.g. consist of mineral fiber, ceramic fiber, wire mesh or other temperature-resistant elastic materials. After it has been pushed onto the monolith from its end face (s), the metal frame is pushed over the sleeve, whereby the elastic sleeve can be compressed. This compression can also be achieved or reinforced by a sleeve material that expands once when heated. Such a material is e.g. a so-called expanded mica mat, e.g. a so-called expanded mica mat, e.g. is marketed by 3M under the name INTERAM @.
  • the required heat treatment can be carried out after installation or only during operation by exposure to hot exhaust gases, e.g. a hot flue gas.
  • the frame is provided on one end face with safety stops which encompass the end face of the catalytic converter and thus cause an axial displacement due to positive locking prevent the catalyst element.
  • the metal frame on its end face projects inwards with the formation of a continuous stop or a stop divided into a plurality of “tongues” for an edge zone of the end face of the catalyst element.
  • the combination of buffer sleeve and metal frame can therefore be provided for attachment to at least one end section of the catalyst element.
  • the left designed as an exploded drawing, shows a 1 m long monolithic ceramic catalyst element 1 of square cross-section (edge length 150 mm), which is traversed over its entire length by numerous square flow channels, in which the exhaust gas to be treated flows and comes into contact with the catalyst .
  • This can be a material component of the element or can be present as a coating on the ceramic material of the element.
  • a 3 cm deep frame 3 made of temperature-resistant steel corresponds to the outer shape of the monolith and sleeve and has a slightly smaller inner free cross-section than the sum of the end faces of the catalyst element and buffer sleeve (158 mm x 158 mm). It is provided on two adjacent side surfaces with rectangular recesses 4 in a matching shape and arrangement (dimensions 10 mm x 100 mm). The two other side surfaces are provided with rectangular projections 5, which can positively engage in the above-described recesses in adjacent frames of a package of held catalyst elements.
  • material V2A temperature-resistant steel
  • a stop plate 6 Attached to the outer edge of the metal frame is a stop plate 6 protruding 6 mm inwards perpendicularly to the side surface and supporting the edge zone of the monolith end face.
  • the frame is forced over the buffer sleeve during assembly and pushed onto it until the stop plates come into contact with the monolith face.
  • the monolith provided with the holding device at both ends can then be put together with other equally equipped monoliths via the tongue and groove connection 4/5 to form a catalyst package.
  • FIG. 2 shows the projection views onto the catalytic converter element 1, a buffer sleeve 2 and onto a frame 3.
