A double acting mortice lock comprising a lock case (2) secured with respect to a cover plate (4) and enclosing a lock mechanism (8) comprising a toothed actuating wheel (9) directly engaging with sets of teeth (14, 15) formed in the end portions (16, 17), disposed on either side of the toothed actuating wheel (9), of two locking bars (6, 7) acting in opposite directions, and the actuating wheel actuating a swinging bolt (19) through a finger (18) fixed with respect to the toothed actuating wheel (9) and engaged between two stop surfaces (24, 25) of the swinging bolt (19), characterised in that the finger (18), fixed for rotation with the toothed actuating wheel (9), performs a free movement during the locking phase, before acting on the swinging bolt (19) through one of the stop surfaces (25), and that at least one of the locking bars (6, 7) includes a striking surface (28) which, in the locked position of the lock (1), is disposed facing at least one ramp (29) fixed with respect to the swinging bolt (19), the striking surface acting on the swinging bolt (19) through the ramp (29) as a result of the rotation of the toothed actuating wheel (9) towards its position corresponding to the opening position of the lock (1).

4. A double acting mortice lock according to Claim 1, characterised in that it includes a shaft (20) concentric with the toothed actuating wheel (9), and on which the swinging bolt (19) is pivoted.

8. A double acting mortice lock according to Claim 1, characterised in that the two spaced apart stop surfaces (24, 25) comprise projections extending with respect to one of the faces of the body (27) of the swinging bolt (19).
