Definitions
- the invention relates to a pyrotechnic igniter usable on shells with additional propulsion and drag reduction shells, this igniter comprising a resistant outer casing the bottom of which is provided with divergent peripheral orifices and an ignition charge placed in this casing.
- Igniters having such a structure have been known for many years as regards the firing of propellant charges used for the additional propulsion of shells, and these charges are most often of the “central channel” type and have a great length. It is also known that the use of an igniter generally causes a little more dispersion of the impacts of shells during shots, and this is one of the main reasons why after having used igniters placed upstream of the propellant charge , as described for example in patent US-A-3, 698, 321, direct firing techniques have been developed without using an igniter, one of these techniques being described in US-A-4197800.
- the patents FR-A-2 328 938 and FR-A-2 365 777 describe such igniters according to different configurations, the preamble of claim 1 being based on one of these documents.
- the igniter is placed entirely in the bottom of the shell and the orifices for ejection of the ignition gases and of incandescent particles are drilled in the bottom of the housing, theoretically this configuration is the best since the gases charged with hot particles do not tend to erode the surface of the gas generator block, but it has been found that under the special conditions of cannon fire many blocks do not even ignite whereas such a configuration would be perfectly suitable for a propellant or gas generator not integrated into a shell.
- the igniter is placed at the level of the propellant block, which saves space, but the short length of the central channel implies a lateral or oblique ejection of the gases from ignition so that the block can be ignited regardless of the propellant composition.
- lateral ejection causes localized erosive combustion which is not very reproducible of the propellant block generating gas.
- All the igniters intended for the loadings generating gas of the shells, that this generation is limited to obtain a reduction of drag or that this generation is important to obtain a propulsive effect, are compact igniters whose box is completely filled by the loading of ignition.
- This charge contains either pyrotechnic elements, or a monolithic block obtained by molding or by compression, which are supported on the downstream bottom of the ignition box which makes it possible to maintain this charge during the acceleration phase of the shell in the Canon.
- the object of the present invention is to obtain, on the one hand, total reliability of the ignition of the gas generator charge whatever the propellant composition used, in particular with the compositions at very low combustion speed at low pressure which are difficult to ignite in the special conditions of firing shells, and on the other hand an improvement in the reproducibility of ignition which directly influences the accuracy of long-range shots, one of the causes of the dispersions observed with the drag reduction shells compared to normal shells being the irregularity of the ignition conditions.
- the invention is characterized in that the internal surface of the igniter box comprises a means for axial positioning of the charge which provides a free space between the downstream face of the charge and the bottom of the box, the ignition charge being constituted by a pyrotechnic unit secured to a peripheral ferrule in support on said axial positioning means.
- the axial positioning means consists of an internal shoulder of the box on which the peripheral shell of the ignition charge bears
- this axial positioning means consists of the internal surface of the igniter box which is tapered, the bottom of this box being connected to the small base of the trunk of the cone and the ignition charge itself being tapered with the same opening angle.
- the internal central zone of the bottom of the housing has a projection whose thickness decreases from the center towards the periphery, such a deflector having a real efficiency variable over time as a function of the instantaneous distance which exists between the combustion surface of the ignition pyrotechnic composition and the bottom of the housing, which makes it possible to limit the erosion of the propellant block of the gas generator load while having a very efficient lateral diffusion of the ignition gases, especially at the start of ignition.
- this projection can be constituted by a conical element, a truncated cone shape or a complete cone allowing good deflection when the base circle of the conical element is substantially tangent to the internal part of the openings, the angle at the top of the cone preferably being between 120 ° and 160 °.
- this projection is truncated, it is then advantageous for the height to be substantially equal to the height of the free space provided by the axial positioning means, so that this projection constitutes both a deflector and a support stop for the ignition charge.
- the peripheral shell of the ignition charge belongs to a cup whose bottom has a peripheral flange, and advantageously this flange is constituted by a rim whose two superimposed thicknesses form a metallic seal.
- the pyrotechnic block of the ignition charge has a combustion duration greater than 0.8 seconds, this duration being more particularly between 1.5 and 2.5 seconds, and on the other hand this block is produced from a composition comprising from 16 to 25% of magnesium, an inorganic oxidant, and from 2.5% to 6% of an organic binder such as a polymer.
- the advantages obtained thanks to this invention consist essentially in that at the beginning of the combustion of the pyrotechnic ignition block the heat flow, constituted by the combustion gases and the incandescent particles, is essentially directed laterally which allows this flux to be concentrated. thermal on a restricted surface of the gas generator load, the annular zone of maximum effect of the thermal flux moving progressively downstream of the channel of the gas generator load while retaining sufficient lateral diffusion to be effective on the surface of this channel.
- the creation of a free space which has proved possible despite the thermodynamic and kinetic conditions of a cannon shot, allows to benefit from a much larger initial surface, all of these operating conditions making it possible to obtain a high reproducibility of the ignition conditions of the gas-generating charges, in particular those used for the reduction of drag, which makes it possible to considerably increase the accuracy of long-range shots by reducing the dispersion of the impact points.
- the shell (2) is extended towards the rear by a peripheral skirt (2a) on which is attached a bottom (not shown) comprising a large axial opening of exhaust of the combustion gases generated by the gas generator charge (1) which is constituted by a block of propellant with an externally inhibited central channel and which is placed in the combustion chamber internal to the skirt.
- the igniter of the gas generator load has an outside diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the internal channel, and the steel casing (3) of the igniter is directly screwed into the rear boss of the bottom (2b) of the shell.
- the internal surface of this box has a shoulder (8) whose width is slightly greater than the thickness of the peripheral shell (7) of the ignition charge, which is constituted by a light alloy bucket and by the monolithic pyrotechnic block (11).
- This pyrotechnic block is directly formed in this cup by compression of a pulverulent composition containing 16% of magnesium, 26% of barium peroxide, 50% of another oxide or alkaline or alkaline-earth peroxide and 8% of a binder polyester.
- the ignition charge with a total mass of 40 grams must under the kinetic conditions of a cannon fire withstand an effort of approximately 500 to 800 daN, and the use of a thin ferrule (7) requires that the bucket is provided with a peripheral fixing flange (10) which is constituted by a laterally stamped rim whose two superimposed thicknesses form a metallic seal, such a fixing flange being useless in the case where the internal surface of the box is frustoconical and receives a charge of ignition itself frustoconical, the entire lateral surface of the load participating in the maintenance of this charge during firing with the gun.
- the pyrotechnic block has a free surface which is slightly frustoconical and is supported on the small base of the truncated cone (9) which is formed inside the igniter housing, the large base of this projection being tangent to the ejection orifices (4) and (4 ') which are radial slots which cut the bottom and the tubular wall of the housing, this form of slot contributing to the progressive modification of the orientation of the cone d maximum effect of the heat flux generated by the igniter, the combustion time of which is 2.5 seconds.
- all the samples of propellant gas generator of different compositions were ignited under satisfactory conditions of reproducibility, and the stable combustion of most of the samples under a pressure of 5 to 10 bars was obtained after a duration of the order of 0.6 to 0.8 seconds.
