Claims (14)

1. Apparatus for sanding and/or abrasively dressing wooden workpieces, wherein the said apparatus comprises a hollow drum (1) having its longitudinal axis inclined into a working position and containing an abrasive material, with a workpiece support (44) provided within the hollow drum, the said workpiece support being movable in vibration, characterised by means for driving in alternating rotational movement the hollow drum (1), the workpiece, and the actuating means (31, 32, 39, 69, 70, 71) for imparting vibratory movement to the workpiece support (44) inside the hollow drum.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, characterised in that the workpiece support (44) is arranged on one end of a movable carrier (25), the other end of which is carried by the end wall (16) of the hollow drum (1).
3. Apparatus according to Claim 2, characterised in that the movable carrier comprises a cylindrical bar (26) which is carried, at the end thereof remote from the end which carries the workpiece support (44), in a rotary joint (27), the bearing of which is fixed to a support member (29) which is secured to the end wall (16) of the hollow drum, the cylindrical bar being held at its other end by means of tie rods (31, 32) pivoted in vertical and horizontal planes to brackets (35, 37) fixed to the end wall (16) of the hollow drum.

Apparatus according to Claim 2, characterised in that the movable carrier comprises a body (72) fixed to the said support member (29) by means of rubber mounting blocks (73), the body (72) having fixed to one end thereof a shaft (74) which passes freely through the end wall (16) of the hollow drum and which carries a workpiece support (44).
5. Apparatus according to Claim 3, characterised in that the vibratory actuating means for the movable carrier comprises reciprocable driving means (38) for the cylindrical bar (26) and tie rods (31, 32).
6. Apparatus according to Claim 3 or Claim 5, characterised in that the tie rods (31, 32) are inclined in vertical and horizontal planes by an angle of between 90° and 45° to the horizontal.
7. Apparatus according to Claim 2 or Claim 4, characterised in that the vibratory actuating means comprises at least one vibrator (69, 70, 71) fastened on the said body (72) and so disposed thereon as to act in the required direction.
8. Apparatus according to Claim 7, characterised in that the vibrators consist of out-of-balance motors.
9. Apparatus according to any one of Claims 2 to 8, characterised in that the workpiece support (44) includes a cross member (46) adapted to be secured immovably to the end of the cylindrical bar (26) of the movable carrier, two parallel posts (49, 50) secured in a generally symmetrical manner to the ends of the cross member and forming with the latter a U-shaped structure, and a mounting frame (51) comprising two longitudinal members (52, 53) connected together by spacing members (54, 55) the mounting frame further comprising two sleeve members (56, 57) which are fixedly mounted in the region of the said spacers and which cooperate with the posts (49, 50) through clamping means, the said mounting frame having, at the ends of the longitudinal members, clamping means (58, 61) for the workpieces.
10. Apparatus according to any one of the preceding Claims, characterised in that the frequency of the vibration of the workpiece support is between 3 and 30 Hertz.
11. Apparatus according to Claim 10, characterised in that the amplitude of vibration lies between zero and ± 20 mm.
12. Apparatus according to any one of the preceding Claims, characterised in that the movable carrier (25) carries a counter-balance at the end thereof opposite that corresponding to the workpiece support (44).
13. Apparatus according to any one of the preceding Claims, characterised in that the abrasive material is in the form of balls.
