Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for guiding an electron beam in a microwave source operating on the principle of the gyrotron according to the preamble of claim 1.
- Such a device is e.g. from the article by J.D. Silverstein et al. in Int. J. Electronics 53 (6), pp. 539-546 (1982).
- an energy-rich electron beam originating from an electron gun is sent through a strong magnetic field oriented parallel to the beam axis.
- the electrons then run on spiral tracks with a cyclotron frequency dependent on magnetic induction around the beam axis.
- this beam of rotating electrons now traverses a microwave resonator of suitable dimensions, then electromagnetic vibrations are excited in this resonator, which can be coupled out of the resonator.
- a beam guide (beam duct) is used, which encloses the beam as an electrically conductive, cylindrical outer surface and allows the unhindered propagation of the electron beam by limiting space charge effects.
- the circumferential surface of a beam guide according to the prior art which is closed in the radial direction, represents a waveguide.
- the radius of the electron beam is large compared to Cut-off wavelength of the circular waveguide mode at the operating frequency. Unwanted wave modes can therefore be excited in the beam guidance if suitable measures for damping such modes are not provided.
- the essence of the invention consists in that damping openings with a sufficiently large opening width are provided for damping undesired modes in the lateral surface of the beam guide in order to achieve sufficient permeability of the lateral surface for the modes mentioned and thus corresponding damping.
- wire mesh made of electrically highly conductive metal wire with a suitable mesh size as the material for the outer surface of the beam guide.
- the known gyrotron of the type shown in FIG. 1 for generating high-power microwaves essentially comprises an electron gun 1, a beam guide 5, a cavity resonator 6 and an output waveguide 7.
- the parts listed are housed in a vacuum chamber (not shown) and enclosed by a solenoid coil (also not shown), which generates the strong magnetic field that is essential for the gyrotron effect.
- the electron gun 1 emits an electron beam 2.
- the diameter of the electron beam 2 is kept small, typically 4 mm, for a 120 GHz gyrotron in order to achieve high effectiveness in converting beam energy into electromagnetic wave energy.
- space charge effects such as e.g. a current limitation or a reduction in the beam potential, which limit the energy transport in the beam.
- the beam guide 5 is arranged between the two and contains a stacking sequence of metal rings 3 and ceramic rings 4 inside.
- This stacking sequence represents a measure for damping undesired wave modes which can be excited by the electron beam 2 in the closed lateral surface of the beam guide 5 which acts as a waveguide. In this way it is achieved that only the desired electromagnetic waves are excited in the cavity resonator 6 and are coupled out via the output waveguide 7.
- mode attenuation in the beam guide 5 is now carried out in a significantly simpler manner realized that instead of the integrated stack of metal rings 3 and ceramic rings 4, a plurality are provided by damping openings in the surface of the beam guide, allowing the leakage of electromagnetic fields and thereby the intrinsic Q of the beam guide 'ung to a subcritical value decrease.
- the beam guide 5 has a cylindrical outer surface made of a wire mesh or wire mesh, which surrounds the electron beam 2.
- the wire mesh contains the meshes of the fabric or mesh as damping openings 13.
- the characteristic opening width a of the mesh is chosen so that it is approximately equal to or greater than the wavelength of the wave mode to be damped.
- the characteristic opening width a is less than half the difference between the radius of the lateral surface and the radius of the electron beam 2, because then the guiding properties of the beam guide 5 are particularly pronounced. Both dimensioning regulations for the characteristic opening width a can easily be met for high frequencies above 100 GHz.
- the wire mesh of the beam guide 5 from FIG. 2 preferably consists of copper, silver or similar, electrically highly conductive materials.
- the radius of the cylindrical outer surface is between 2 and 8 mm and is typically 5 mm, with a radius of the electron beam of about 2 mm being assumed.
- the exact cylinder radius is determined by the maximum possible drop in potential of the electron beam. Lies If this cylinder radius is fixed, the characteristic opening width a results from the dimensioning instructions mentioned above.
- quasi-optical gyrotron and quasi-optical gyroklystron are known as further developments for the millimeter wave range (A. Bondeson et al. In Int. J Electronics 53 (6), pp. 547 ff. (1982)).
- the electron beam emitted by the electron gun 1 is sent into a quasi-optical open resonator 10 for interaction with an alternating electromagnetic field, which consists of two opposite, concave resonator mirrors 8 and 9.
- the geometry of the arrangement makes it necessary to have additional through openings 11 and 12 in the area of the open resonator 10 in the lateral surface of the beam guide 5, which in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 3 has 13 through holes in a conductive plate (for example made of sheet metal) as damping openings to provide through which the resonator waves can pass freely.
- the beam guide has a rectangular cross section perpendicular to the axis of the electron beam 2, the height h of which is constant and e.g. Is 10 mm and its width in the middle is a maximum of e.g. 80 mm reached and decreases linearly on both sides.
- the wire mesh of the outer surface is preferably held by a frame 14 which is the beam guide 5 gives the necessary stability and at the same time limits the through openings 11 and 12 for the waves of the open resonator 10.
- the meshes of the wire mesh in turn form the damping openings 13, the characteristic opening width a of which is determined according to the dimensioning instructions already described.
- the invention provides a mode-attenuated beam guide for gyrotrons, which is characterized by a particularly simple and robust structure and can be implemented with correspondingly little effort.

Abstract
Description
Silverstein et al. in Int. J. Electronics 53 (6), S. 539-546 (1982) bekannt.
Fig. 5 in der eingangs zitierten Druckschrift).
- Fig. 1 die schematisierte Darstellung eines Gyrotrons mit einer gedämpften Strahlführung nach dem Stand der Technik;
- Fig. 2 ein Ausführungsbeispiel einer Strahlführung nach der Erfindung für ein Gyrotron gemäss Fig. 1;
