Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for removing polychlorobiphenyls (PCB) from electrical insulating liquids when replacing PCB oils with other insulating liquids, in particular silicone oils.
A main area of application for chlorinated biphenyls, which are also referred to in the following as PCB, is the use as insulating liquids or cooling liquids in the so-called ascarels, which are flame-retardant electrical insulating liquids that do not generate flammable or explosive gases in electric arcs. Such ascarels are widely used as transformer insulation fluids.
However, it became known at the end of the 1960s that the more chlorinated biphenyls in particular are difficult to degrade, bioaccumulative and therefore very ecologically unsafe.
Dibenzodioxine freiwerden.Furthermore, there is the possibility that PCBs can release the highly toxic, chlorinated dibenzofurans or dibenzodioxins at higher temperatures.
For this reason, the use of PCB in the Federal Republic of Germany was only permitted for certain areas of application in accordance with the 10th Ordinance for the Implementation of the Federal Immission Control Act of July 26, 1978.
This includes the use of PCB in systems from which no PCB can normally escape, such as on electrical devices such as transformers, chokes, capacitors, etc.
Nevertheless, there is a tendency today to either completely replace askarel-filled transformers or at least to replace the insulating liquid with environmentally friendly products, for example silicone oil.
However, it has been found here that the replacement of PCB oils with other transformer insulating liquids is not so easy, since the complete removal of PCB oil from such a transformer is practically impossible, even if the transformer is dismantled and closed after transportation an appropriate transfer system is thoroughly cleaned there. Over time, the residual PCB quantities inevitably remaining in transformers or their components enter the new transformer insulating liquid, so that after some time contents of up to 10% by volume of PCB oil are present in the new transformer insulating liquid.
As a result, the insulating liquid has to be replaced again, possibly even several times, whereby the disposal of the PCB-contaminated silicone oil is naturally problematic. Methods have become known which make it possible to remove PCB contaminants from the exchanged transformer liquid by adsorption.
The object of the invention is a process for the removal of polychlorobiphenyls from electrical insulating liquids, in particular silicone or mineral oils, which makes it possible to obtain a PCB-free, reusable insulating liquid in an economical manner, the polychlorobiphenyls subsequently being obtained in concentrated form, so that, for example, a Disposal by incineration in a special oven becomes possible without difficulty.
The method according to the invention, which is based on the extraction of the polychlorobiphenyls from the electrical insulating liquid with a solvent for polychlorobiphenyls which is immiscible with this insulating liquid, serves to achieve this object.
Lower alcohols, for example methanol, are very suitable as liquid extractants, and lower alcohols are to be understood as meaning C 1 -C 4 -alkanols.
After intensive contact with the liquids, the extractant is separated.
The extraction can be carried out continuously or batchwise in several steps in the customary and known extraction apparatus.
In the present description, the term “electrical insulating liquids” is understood to mean all insulating liquids or ascareles which do not contain or do not contain PCB.
The extractant enriched with PCB is separated from it by distillation and can then be used again for extraction.
The distillation is not a problem since PCB is obtained in the form of a low-viscosity liquid.
The preparation should take place at a few central points in order to enable the extraction and distillation apparatus to be economically dimensioned and to ensure that the process is carried out in a technically perfect manner.
The number of extraction steps until complete PCB removal from the insulating liquid can be reduced by adding an additional adsorption stage.
The choice of the corresponding process or the corresponding process combination depends on the desired degree of purity.
Such an adsorption process is described in the article "Problems with PCB-filled
To clean the insulating liquids enriched with PCB, the contaminated transformers are emptied, filled with fresh insulating liquid and the contaminated insulating liquids are then extracted.
When the insulating liquids are replaced on site, the downtimes of the transformer can be kept as low as possible.
The insulating liquid treated with the extractant can still contain traces of the corresponding solvent. These can be dampened by higher temperatures or in a vacuum, although small residual quantities have no negative impact on the functioning of the transformer.
Another problem is the disposal of old transformers. Scrapping with the recovery of valuable materials, such as copper, is not practiced nowadays in transformers contaminated with PCB due to the associated environmental risk. After emptying the transformers, it is common to deposit them underground.
Such a type of disposal leads to undesirable contaminated sites.
With the method according to the invention, old transformers can be recycled. For this purpose, a large number of old transformers are connected to one another at a central point, for example with pipes, and filled with an insulating liquid that is pumped around in the circuit. In order to accelerate the diffusion of the PCB into the insulating liquid, the transformer can be loaded electrically, whereby the insulating liquid heats up. This new procedure, in contrast to one Direct treatment of the transformers with solvents largely precludes a fire or environmental hazard.
The invention is illustrated by the following example.
50 ml der Transformator-Isolierflüssigkeit (Silikonöl mit 6000 ppm PCB) wurde in mehreren Schritten mit jeweils 10 ml Methanol extrahiert.50 ml of the transformer insulating liquid (silicone oil with 6000 ppm PCB) was extracted in several steps with 10 ml methanol.
