  • the present invention relates to an electric-power-supplying roller assembly for plants for the continuous annealing of wire, particularly steel wire, of the type including means for applying an electrical potential difference between pairs of consecutive rollers for driving the wire to heat the wire by the Joule effect, and in which each of the rollers for driving the wire is rotatably supported and has an electrically-conductive annular portion to which a voltage is applied by means of sliding contact brushes connected to a voltage source, said annular portion comprising a plurality of electrically-conductive segments which are insulated from each other, and said electrical sliding brushes engaging an arc of the said annular portion which is within the arc of winding of the wire and has an angular extent such that a voltage is not applied to the segments at the ends of the arc of winding.
  • An electric-power-supplying roller of the above mentioned type is known from GB-A-1.114.261, which relates to an apparatus for effecting permanent elongation of high tensile steel wire by resistance heating of the wire under tension.
  • Said document describes (Fig. 4) a roller (11) having on its periphery a plurality of V-shaped grooves (13) for receiving the wire to be heated; the two end grooves (13a, 13b) are provided with two side rings (31, 32), each of which is formed as a number of commutator segments (33) and is fixed to one of the side edges of the roller.

  • the structure described above allows the contacts 3 to apply a voltage only to those segments 12 which, at any moment, are in an angular portion of the roller 1 lying within the arc of winding of the wire 3 and having an extent less than the angular extend of this arc, whereby at the beginning of the arc of winding the wire 3 is in contact with a segment 12 to which no voltage is applied and, likewise, at the end of the arc of winding the wire moves away from a segment 12 to which no voltage is applied; thus, sparking at the ends of said arc is precluded by the use of a very simple and efficient structure.
