Description

The invention relates to a method and a device for producing a container with a jacket that is wrapped in cardboard or the like and is closed with a lid, the upper edge of the container jacket being rolled inwards in one or more steps and then to double flanging is pressed, one flange is perpendicular upwards and forms the upper end of the container shell, while the second flange protrudes radially inwards.

From GB-A-174 907 a container is known which is provided with a double flange at the upper edge. In this case, a cover plate is placed on the flanging projecting radially inwards, the edge of which can be supported on the flare standing vertically upwards.

Such a closed container is not sufficiently tight. The invention is intended to provide a container that has a high level of tightness.

This is achieved according to the invention in that the cover is made of metal, can be torn open along a predetermined breaking line and also has a flanged edge which is placed on the flare standing vertically upwards and pressed with it.

Such metal covers with a predetermined breaking line are generally known in particular under the name “ring pull”. They have proven themselves in practice, because on the one hand they seal the container very tightly, but on the other hand they are easy to open without any tools. However, they also have a considerable disadvantage, which is that the predetermined breaking line runs at a distance from the outer edge, as a result of which a free edge which projects into the interior of the container remains when it is torn open.

This free edge, which is extremely sharp, poses a considerable risk of injury.

Attempts have been made in practice to reduce this risk of injury.

In the case of a solution which has become known in practice, this is to be achieved in that a further edge with a rounded edge is arranged above the edge which arises when it is torn open.

Such a metal cover equipped with an additional edge is relatively expensive and can only protect against contact with the upper edge of the break line. However, it is precisely this upper edge that is much less dangerous than the lower, still unprotected edge due to the scratch line on the top of the lid.

In another solution that has become known in practice, a plastic strip is attached to the outside of the metal cover between its edge and the tear line.

Even with this, however, the risk of injury cannot be significantly reduced, since in particular the inner, sharper edge of the tear line is still exposed.

In the case of tin cans, it is also known to form an inwardly projecting bead into the container jacket below the lid, as a result of which undesired contact with the predetermined breaking line is largely prevented.

Such a bead would be extremely difficult to manufacture in a container wrapped in cardboard. In addition, such a container would then no longer have any compressive strength, so that it would be completely unusable.

By contrast, the method according to the invention creates a container in which there is no risk of injury from the edge which remains when opening.

The radially inward flaring effectively prevents unwanted contact with the tear edge of the remaining edge of the lid.

However, such flanging also entails considerable stiffening of the upper edge of the container.

An advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention also lies in the fact that the flare standing vertically upwards is pressed flat in the horizontal direction.

According to the invention, the flanging projecting inwards can also be pressed flat in the vertical direction.

The stability of the container can be further improved by these pressings. In addition, the attachment of the lid can also be facilitated.

A device according to the invention for carrying out the method is characterized in that a turntable is provided with a plurality of holding mandrels, each of which is assigned to a processing station, the first of which is equipped for winding the container jacket from a flat cardboard blank or the like, while the second station is equipped with a sealing device, preferably an ultrasonic sealing device, for producing the longitudinal seam of the container, and that in at least one further station a device for flanging a mouth roll is provided, while in a subsequent station a pressing device is arranged which converts the mouth roll into a double flanging and at the same time at least partially presses flat, and that a cover fitting device is furthermore provided, which is provided with a cover magazine and in which the cover is pressed with the upward flaring of the double flanging.

With such a device, the method for producing the aforementioned container can be carried out in a simple and extremely efficient manner.

A container according to the invention with a jacket that is wrapped in cardboard or the like and with a lid is closed, the upper edge of the container shell being rolled inwards in one or more steps and then pressed to form a double flange, one flange standing vertically upwards and forming the upper end of the container shell, while the second flange projects radially inwards , is characterized in that the cover is made of metal, can be torn open along a predetermined breaking line and also has a flanged edge which is placed on the flare standing vertically upwards and pressed with it.

If a metal lid of the type mentioned is provided, such a container provides reliable protection against contact with the tear-open edge and has excellent stability.
