Definitions

  • the invention relates to a display matrix formed by the downstream ends of a set of optical fibers, the upstream ends of which are arranged to receive light from a light source.
  • Document DE-A-2 83.1 174 discloses a matrix of the aforementioned type at the top of this document, in which the optical fibers are associated individually or in very small sets with screening devices arranged on the front of the end downstream of the fibers concerned and capable of modifying the color and / or the intensity of the light emitted towards the front of the matrix, control devices for the screening devices making it possible to selectively control the screening of specific groups of fibers so as to transform the display at will.
  • the concealment devices can be of the optoelectric type (liquid crystals, etc.): this is not satisfactory for applications in the field of display on roads or motorways, on the one hand because of the very disturbed operation of the devices of this kind at very low temperatures in the winter season or too high when exposed to the sun, and on the other hand, due to the fact that they never completely obscure the light, hence a definition imperfect messages.
  • the occultation devices of the mentioned document can also be of the electromechanical type: they are screens pushed in translation by jacks, or alternatively tilting valves controlled by electromagnets.
  • the lateral dimensions are relatively large and do not allow very close fibers to be fitted downstream.
  • the slightest power cut causes the collapse of all the valves, that is to say the annihilation of the message.
  • the system is noisy.
  • concealment or absence of concealment It does not allow the realization on a same matrix of variable messages with several colors (which is necessary for the representation of certain road signs).
  • the object of the invention is to provide a matrix with light fibers, allowing the display of a practically unlimited number of messages, with electromechanical masking devices, not having the drawbacks of the known matrix, and which can operate very quickly.
  • each concealment device comprises a disc comprising different concealment sectors capable of interposing on the path of the light, as a function of a rotation controlled by the control, each disc being driven in rotation by a rotary motor with two stable equilibrium positions, the rotation of which is controlled by pulses and in that the motor comprises a rotor rotating freely on an axis and consisting of a small permanent magnet to two poles oriented radially with respect to the axis, a stator formed by a circuit magnetizable by pulse in a material with good remanence, having two poles diametrically opposite with respect to the axis of the rotor, the stator comprising near each of its poles an indexing element not aligned with said poles of the stator intended to destabilize the position of the rotor at the time of a pulse.
  • the blackout areas can consist of free openings, color filters, or solid parts.
  • a reduction gear is provided between the disc and the axis of the motor so as to transform the rotation of a half-turn of the axis of the motor into a desired angle rotation of the disc to pass from one sector to the neighboring sector.
  • FIG. 1 represents a display panel element 1 in the form of a matrix of 7 ⁇ 5 cells, with a height of 105 mm and a width of 75 mm.
  • a complete display panel includes several elements 1.
  • each cell ends the downstream end 2 of a light conductor 3 made of optical fibers, fixed by a conventional end piece 4 in the support face 5 of the panel element.
  • a concealment disc 6 can rotate on an axis 7 parallel to the axis of the end piece 4.
  • On this disc are arranged one or more openings 8, 9, 10, centered on a circumference passing through the axis of the tip of the light conductor during the rotation of the disc.
  • the light passes and the light point is visible.
  • the openings can be fitted with colored filters according to the desired result (openings 9, 10 fig. 3), or free (openings 8, figure 4).
  • the light point becomes invisible.
  • a protective plate 11, pierced with holes 12 in the axis of the end pieces 4 of the conductors 3, can be placed at the front of the support face 5 and of the discs 6.
  • the ends of a very small set of optical fibers for example three or four, coming from one or more light sources which may or may not be lit, associated with the same occultation disc whose rotation and openings are calculated according to the arrangement of said ends and the desired ends.
  • Providing several fibers for a disc makes it possible to increase the brightness of the message by increasing the number of light ends functioning as the same “point” of the message, and / or to increase security in the event of a lamp failure, and / or to provide colored fibers upstream of the fibers and thus to increase the possibilities of changing the color of the message displayed.
  • the axis of the occultation disc is mounted on the rotor of a motor 13 for angular positioning of the disc, capable of carrying out the orders of a control logic.
  • This motor can be in different forms depending on the application for which the screen is intended.
  • it may consist of a permanent magnet secured to the axis and placed in the air gap of an electromagnet.
  • the motor must be designed to take up minimal space.
  • a preferred embodiment in the case of a single free opening disc 8 taking two positions: one coinciding with the axis of the nozzle 4 (shown in solid lines in Figure 4), l 'other, opposite the first, for the occlusion (in dotted lines in Figure 4).
  • the rotor of the motor 13 is constituted by a small magnet 14 with a high coercive field, magnetized with two poles arranged radially with respect to the axis.
  • the complete rotor fitted therefore consists of an axis carrying on the one hand the blackout disc, and on the other hand the rotating magnet 14.
  • This magnet can be constituted, in practice, by a small cylinder of diametrically magnetized plastoferrite.
  • the stator consists of a magnetic circuit 15 made of a material with good remanence but a low coercive field. It can have the shape that one wishes as long as its two poles 16, 17 are presented diametrically relative to the axis of the rotor, at the level of the magnet 14.
  • It can be in one or more pieces, round section or other etc.
  • the short current pulses (typically less than 1 ms) sent by the control unit in one direction or the other in the coil have the effect of stably magnetizing the stator, thanks to its remanence.
  • the rotor therefore tends to be positioned so that its N and S poles correspond respectively to the S and N poles of the stator 15.
  • the stable equilibrium position of the rotor is 180 ° from the previous one (% revolution).
  • a new pulse of a current of the same direction does not modify anything.
  • a new pulse of a reverse current again turns the rotor 180 ° in the same direction.
  • the equilibrium position is at the point of minimum reluctance, and the pulse as before.
  • the control logic is of a conventional type and does not need to be described.
  • the invention makes it possible to obtain a matrix operating in a wide range of temperatures (for example from -30 ° C to + 110 ° C), requiring only short pulses (energy savings) to operate in addition to l light energy, making it possible to write a wide variety of messages (both written messages, such as "ACCIDENT AT 800 M", as well as pictograms, such as traffic signs).
