- a hinge of t is kind is situated on the inside of the door at the same time as the door in its closed position bears against the door frame. This means that in the closed position the pivot bearing of the hinge is located inside the door frame. If the pivot bearing were to be rigidly attached this would mean that the door could not be opened because its edges which move inwards as it swings would catch on the door frame. (A door could possibly be designed with, for instance, cylindrical edges which would not catch on the door frame, although this is not envisaged here, but rather doors with square edges).

- a recess 19 is present in the door 5 , which does not however extend as far as the outer face 20 of the door by which the hinge device is concealed.

Abstract
Une charnière consiste en une partie fixe (3) laquelle est conçue pour être fixée sur un cadre d'une porte (1) et en une partie mobile (4) laquelle est conçue pour supporter une porte (5) pour que cette dernière puisse pivoter librement. La charnière est conçue pour être adaptée à l'intérieur de la porte de sorte qu'elle est cachée lorsque la porte se trouve dans la position fermée, et comporte un mécanisme qui, lorsque la porte pivote, provoque l'éloignement de l'axe de pivotement de la porte par rapport au cadre de cette dernière, aménageant ainsi un dégagement pour que la porte pivote. La partie fixe (3) et la partie mobile (4) sont reliées à l'aide d'un coulisseau ayant un mouvement de préférence rectiligne. Le mécanisme consiste en un entraînement par engrenage (7, 12-18) par l'intermédiaire duquel le mouvement de pivotement de la porte se traduit par un mouvement de coulissement entre la partie fixe et la partie mobile.
