Abstract

A power connecting terminal for a printed circuit board comprises a clamping screw inserted in a flat fixed part which is folded back on itself and which has three parallel lugs fitting into metallized holes and separated by edges. This part may be fastened to the board by soldering the edges to a conducting layer, and to the lugs by soldering with the metallized holes. The terminal is capable of withstanding high tightening forces.

Description

The invention relates to a connection terminal comprising a flat metallic piece of small thickness which has a contact surface equipped with a screw and which is provided with protruding parallel lugs capable of penetrating into openings of a printed circuit board. so as to be soldered with a conductive layer of this circuit.

Such terminals, which are frequently used to transmit small currents, are generally placed side by side using an insulating support to form a connector able to cooperate, for example with a multiplicity of conductors, the screws being generally arranged. so that their axes are substantially perpendicular or slightly inclined relative to the plane of the map; in order to give the ends of the conductors a satisfactory tightening, the screws are generally associated with a solid metal part which has a common opening where the ends of the conductors and the respective contact surfaces will be applied against each other.

Other multiple terminal connector devices for printed circuits, in which the currents to be transmitted are greater, use a multiplicity of flat parts each having two parallel tabs suitable for being soldered with a conductive layer placed on the side opposite to the connector, and comprising each a contact surface carried by a tongue capable of cooperating with an elastic clip or socket fixed by crimping on one end of the conductor, an insulating holding device being associated with these flat parts.

These embodiments of known connection terminals have the drawback of being either only intended for the transmission of low currents, or of being fragile in the absence of additional holding means or when the number of flat parts is low, and to use expensive removable connecting members.

The invention proposes to provide a connection terminal whose general constitution corresponds to that which is mentioned above and which is capable of transmitting high currents, while having a significant inherent solidity and a reduced cost of implementation, without using additional holding means.

According to the invention, the desired result is achieved thanks to the fact that the metal part has two wings, folded around a common edge perpendicular to the card, so as to make between them a determined angle, and has three legs, the one is close to the edge, while the other two are remote from the latter, a threaded hole capable of cooperating with a terminal screw being disposed in one of the wings so that its axis is substantially parallel to the plane of the card, the parallel tabs being engaged in metallized openings of the card and welded therewith.

The invention will be better understood on reading the description below.

A printed circuit board 1, visible in FIG. 2 and comprising an insulating plate 2 and a conductive layer 3, receives a terminal 4 which is placed on the side where this conductive layer is located.

This terminal mainly comprises a metal part 5 which is visible, in particular, in FIG. 1a and which is obtained by folding, around an edge 7, a cut flat part 5 "', so as to form two wings 5 'and 5 "forming a determined angle between them, see also Figures 1b and 2.

This part 5 has on the wing 5 ′ a contact or connection surface 6 which is provided with a threaded opening 8 of axis XX ′ perpendicular thereto.

On one side 9 of the wing 5 ', which is opposite the wing 5 ", is engaged in the hole 8 a clamping member 10 comprising a screw 11, having a head 12 and a pierced stirrup 13 which is placed under this head.

In the vicinity of the two opposite ends 14, 15 of the two wings and respectively of the edge 7, the part 5 has three parallel legs 16, 17, respectively 18, which are placed in the planes where the two respective wings circulate.

Two aligned edges 19 and 20 of the part 5 are located between the legs 17, 18, respectively 18, 16, before the cut part 5 "'is folded and are placed in the same plane RR', visible in FIG. 3 , when the part 5 has been folded, the edge 7 being substantially perpendicular to this plane The conductive layer 3 and the insulating plate 2 are pierced with three openings 22, 23, 24 internally metallized whose spacings correspond to those of the tabs 17 , 18 and 16 so that the part 5 can be associated with the printed circuit board 1 by making these tabs penetrate these openings, see FIG. 3, until the edges 19, 20 come in close proximity to the layer 3.

To achieve the attachment of the part 5, a weld bead 21 is deposited on the conductive layer so as to simultaneously wet, on the one hand the edges 19 and 20 and, on the other hand, the tabs 18, 17, 16 and the corresponding metallized holes.

When the part 5 is fixed, the axis XX 'of the screw 10 is substantially parallel to the plane PP' of the card 1, and is separated from the neighboring face 27 thereof by a distance "d" such that an edge 25 of the rectangular-shaped stirrup 13 is guided without turning during the tightening of the screw; the orientation of a cambered stirrup, shown in FIG. 2, can be made so that the ends of the conductors are introduced between it and the contact surface 6, either parallel or perpendicular to the plane of the card 1.

An annular portion 26, pushed concentrically with the hole 8 during cutting of the part 5 "', makes it possible to offer the screw a sufficient number of threads despite the reduced thickness of this part.

The angle a and the lengths of the wings will be chosen so that the forces exerted axially and angularly on the terminal by a screwdriver are much less than the resistant fixing torques opposed by the latter and so that the end of the screw does not come lean on the 5 "wing. Angles between 45 ° and 135 ° were satisfactory.

Une fixation encore meilleure est obtenue lorsque des cordons de soudure, tels que 28', 28", relient les extrémités 16', 17', 18' des pattes 16, 17, 18 à une seconde couche conductrice 30 déposée sur la face 29 opposée à la face 27.Thanks to the stability and the rigidity of association given to this terminal by the welding of the three tabs in their openings and the welding of the edges against the conductive layer, the significant tightening torque, which it is necessary to communicate to the screw to ensure an electrical connection capable of transmitting large currents, does not cause dangerous deformation of the card, nor take-off of the conductive layer. Even better fixing is obtained when weld beads, such as 28 ', 28 ", connect the ends 16', 17 ', 18' of the tabs 16, 17, 18 to a second conductive layer 30 deposited on the opposite face 29 on face 27.

When a printed circuit board has one or more terminals conforming to the description which has just been made and this card is disposed in a housing, it is not necessary to carry out (as was necessary with art in order to avoid mechanical stress on the card), a very rigorous correspondence between the terminal housings provided in the housing and the terminals themselves; the location of the different terminals on the card therefore requires less precision, which reduces the technical cost of the devices which use them.

In an advantageous arrangement, which is visible in FIG. 4, an apparatus 31 comprises a thin insulating box 32 which has a bottom 37 and a central volume 33 surrounded by peripheral walls such as 34, 35, 36.

The walls such as 35 have a series of terminal housings, such as 38, 39, 40, etc., which are capable of receiving, with a relatively large clearance, terminals such as 41, fixed to the periphery 48 of a printed circuit board 44 and with parallel axes XX ', X ", X"'. Each housing, such as 39, has a terminal cavity 45, an access opening 46 for a screwdriver and a perpendicular inlet 47 for one end of the conductor to be connected. This opening, this cavity and this entry lead to a face 42 of the housing opposite the bottom 37 which concerns a particular region 49 of the housing (see FIG. 5).

A flat insulating cover 43 closes the volume 33 and holds the card to which it is parallel; the cooperation of the housing walls and the terminal screws is advantageously provided to make them captive.
